This limited edition release has been created to encapsulate the enigmatic flavour of umami – a Japanese word used to identify the ‘fifth taste’ – and has put the creative mastery of Johnnie Walker Master Blender, Dr Emma Walker, and Chef Kei Kobayashi to the test. And we’re delighted to say that the much-anticipated unveiling has undeniably been worth the wait.
Read on to discover more.

Setting the Scene

It seems quite ironic that I’m leaving the home of Scotch whisky to board a flight to Paris (the capital of a country famous for its bubbles not whisky!) for the exclusive launch of the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Elusive Umami Limited Edition in collaboration with renowned Chef Kei Kobayashi.

Situated on Place Vendôme, one of Paris’s most famous and beautiful neoclassical squares, Pavillion Vendôme is the stage for the exciting showcase of this world-class creative collaboration.

Blue is most definitely the colour of the evening as the infamous striding man welcomes us before we stride out onto the inviting blue carpet where we are greeted with a refreshing ginger, honey, and lemon tea (no whisky – yet!).

We receive our ‘element passport’ – more to be revealed later – and enjoy sounds from the live DJ to the backdrop of the rolling blue waves which perfectly set the scene for this exciting immersive experience.

The lights dim and our highly knowledgeable Johnnie Walker Ambassador welcomes and introduces us to Johnnie Walker Blue Label, known to be an incredibly rare blend, which is elevated to another level of complexity in this Elusive Umami Limited Edition. He teases us with snippets of the sensory journey that lies ahead.

The sound of the gong and it is time to move on.

The Creators

With the strike of a gong, we embark upon the next phase of this truly sensory journey. Here we meet Master Blender, Dr Emma Walker and Chef Kei Kobayashi and see for the first time the beautifully bottled ‘Johnnie Walker Blue Label Elusive Umami’ packaged with a striking oriental design and a texture that stimulates the sense of touch.

We learn more about how the ‘fifth taste’ is a flavour that possesses mysterious qualities and how only one in 25,000 casks in the Johnnie Walker unparalleled reserves (of more than 10 million maturing casks!) made the cut when the duo painstakingly searched the reserves for that elusive flavour profile.

Dr Emma continues to tell us that “each expression of Scotch whisky was hand-picked to create an umami profile, just like ingredients for a recipe, allowing us to bring the unique character of this innovative whisky to life.”

Inspired by three of nature’s elements; earth, water and wind, the elusive blend presents a rolling wave of flavour that perfectly balances savoury and sweet qualities, with bright bursts and depth of flavour that give a lingering dry finish.

We nose it. We taste it. We love it.

The mission to elevate the complexities of the Johnnie Walker Blue Label, push the boundaries and create an innovative and unique blend has well and truly been accomplished by these two masters of flavours.

But the story does not end here.

A Feast for the Senses

Although not an obvious drink to pair with food, Chef Kei Kobayashi has expertly created a series of dishes that perfectly complement both the sweet and savoury notes of the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Elusive Umami. No mean feat for even the most creative culinary talent.

The first dish we discover on this journey to ignite the senses is a buckwheat waffle with Kaviari Kristal caviar, sour cream, and smoked salmon. The bursts of slight saltiness of the caviar and salmon on the fluffy warm waffle softened by the sour cream is a welcomed pleasure on the palate and if this is the benchmark for the next seven dishes we are in for a culinary voyage like no other.

The gong sounds again and our ‘element passport’ comes into play. Water, Earth and Air passports dictate which route guests follow to sample the rest of the menu.

Water. The depths of the aquascape present saline and umami notes that blend with minerality, savouriness and sweetness.

Stepping out onto a floating boardwalk, the darkened space has a tranquil ambience. Guests take their seats, highlighted by a personalised menu, at the transparent table and chairs which creates a further connection to the water below.

Our host is the General Manager at Kei restaurant who talks us through the next two dishes and guides us on how best to savour both the whisky and the delicacies presented before us:

  • Gillardeau Oyster Confit, Sea Water Jelly, Shallots Braised in Red Wine and Kaviari Kristal Caviar.
  • Hay-Smoked Lobster, Mushroom Fricassee, Homardine Sauce.

The textures were as exciting as the flavours for each of these dishes; fresh apple and peachy notes burst into life with each sip of the dram.

The sound of the gong and it is time to move on.

Earth. Elusive notes of umami, reminiscent of the depths of the earth combine with natural smoky undertones to give warmth of flavour.

This space presents a chabudair and is adorned with green and blue foliage with slightly rousing background music and here we meet the sommelier from Kei restaurant who is our host for the next two dishes:

  • ‘Kara-Age’ Free Range Chicken Spiced Sweet and Sour Sauce.
  • Mizo Glazed Pigeon from the Vendee French Region.

Both dishes were meaty yet delicate yet hearty with flavours that surprised my tastebuds. A slight spicy kick from the sauce of the chicken and the sweet savoury miso flavour brought out the sweet wood spice notes of the Blue Label Elusive Umami.

The sound of the gong and it is time to move on.

Wind. The winds of time that matures whisky in its casks. Reminiscent of the pure air of the stunning mountains in Nagano where the scent of the trees lingers.

Here we embrace an autumnal-like ambience with a standing bar set up connecting us to the air above and we meet our final host for the evening, Kei restaurant’s maître d’.

  • Japanese Curry.
  • Gorgonzola Foam, Muesli and Honey Infused Whisky.
  • Melting Chocolate Tart.

The transition from a deeply flavoured curry to a rich cheese dish and then a velvety chocolate dessert paired with notes of blood orange and red berries from this beautifully blended whisky was the perfect finish to the expertly and exclusively created menu.

It was absolutely fascinating to notice, experience and enjoy the changing characteristics of the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Elusive Umami with each different dish. I really did not want this to end.

Sadly, the sound of the gong and it is time to move on.

Final Thoughts

Wow. Wow. Wow.

The invitation to this event presented little detail and now I understand the mystery. The very essence of nature’s wonders is a mystery to mankind. The combination of whisky and French cuisine is a mysterious union.

But the mystery is no more. Thanks to the craft, expertise, precision and passion of Dr Emma and Chef Kei these two unlikely companions can live in perfect ‘elusive umami’ harmony for the world to enjoy. I certainly did.

The rarity and craft of Johnnie Walker Blue Label combined with Chef Kei Kobayashi’s exquisite and delicate cuisine, was a truly exceptional experience and one I will never forget.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label Elusive Umami is available exclusively at Johnnie Walker Princes Street in Edinburgh from September 18, 2023, before pre-sales launch globally on October 2, 2023, and available to buy globally from October 16, 2023

Here one feels the freedom of the wildly beautiful Costa de La Luz, close to the emblematic dunes of Punta Paloma.

The shaded terraces of El Miro shelter you from the breezes of the Strait and offer cinematic views as far as the mountains of Morocco.

The tempting new menu has been created by Santiago Guerrero, Executive Chef of the Marbella Club.  Classic dishes such as ‘borriquete’ (rockfish from Cadiz bay) have been revived, and there are delicious additions like the local red tuna tartare. Starters continue with tasty grilled sardines pil-pil shrimp, classic tomato salad with onion and sherry vinaigrette, and also grilled octopus. Main dishes include paella and indulgent rice dishes like the rich carabinero scarlet prawn rice (freshly caught from the adjacent Atlantic).  There’s of course a wealth of seafood, fish and almadraba tuna dishes and meat dishes from the grill including local retinta beef tenderloin.

Puddings are a delight including local sheep yoghurt from Bolonia with wildflower honey, homemade rice pudding with a caramelised sugar topping with citrus shavings, and a superb flan made with local Payoyo cheese.

Nelson Gallo, Head of Bars at Marbella Club, crafts the cocktail menu, drawing inspiration from the rich natural history of the region and the founding family, with concoctions like ‘El Chico’ a tribute to Rafael Chico, patriarch of the family and native of El Mirlo.

The laid-back, barefoot luxury look is by designer Paola Galiardi.

The iconic beach club La Cabane Marbella has been given a new lease of life by the Mosh Group and Dani Garcia Group, with the collaboration of Dolce & Gabbana. Dani García leads the gastronomic transformation of La Cabane while Albert Beniflah, CEO of Grupo Mosh, is the vision behind the captivating new leisure and entertainment offering.

Summer is probably the most exciting season in Marbella, when the bold and the beautiful are found enjoying the latest in dining, hospitality and luxury lifestyle. Each year brings new, exciting projects, further enhancing Marbella’s golden shores as one of the best destinations in Europe. This month we revisited La Cabane Marbella, and were absolutely wowed by the new destination, created by the Dani García Group and the Mosh Group.

Joining forces, these innovative Andalusian hospitality trendsetters have executed a wildly ambitious project creating the new La Cabane Marbella beach club – an extraordinary destination. The vibe is refined, elegant, relaxed, and the crowd is the well-heeled from Europe and the Middle East, writes Andrew Forbes (The Luxury Editor).

Dolce & Gabbana

Dolce & Gabbana’s iconic blue and white maiolica print, reminiscent of traditional, historic maiolica ceramics, is now adorning the new La Cabane Marbella beach club.

This emblematic destination, one of the first beach clubs to open on the Costa del Sol, has been reimagined with D&G which has design ‘take-overs’ of beach clubs in Capri, Taormina, Saint-Tropez as well as here in Marbella.

In Marbella, Dolce & Gabbana brings its iconic prints to La Cabane, including opening a pop-up boutique, as part of the total renovation and renewal of the venue by the Dani García Group and Mosh Group, transforming its gastronomic and entertainment offer to take it to another level.

Dani Garcia gastronomy

The renowned chef Dani García, with three Michelin stars, has been inspired by the beauty of maiolica ceramics, typical of southern Italy, to create a spectacular menu. Dishes are served poolside, on the beachside terrace or in the air-conditioned restaurant.

The ‘Beach Story’ begins when you open the beautifully crafted, inviting you into a magical world.

This culinary transformation draws on the flavours of Italian Mediterranean cuisine and features avant-garde dishes made with the finest raw materials. From a range of pasta, caviar, and pizza options to second courses with a distinctly Italian-Mediterranean flair that transports you to the Amalfi Coast, to a raw bar with a variety of fish and seafood, all with the unmistakable stamp of the Marbella chef.

If you wish to order puddings you can visit the ‘Dolci’ room for inspiration – a theatrically decorated ‘cool room’, an Aladdin’s Cave of sweet treats for grown-ups. This final surprise is a unique space, personalised with the Carretto Siciliano print, and includes a selection of sweets made exclusively for Dolce & Gabbana.

The Dani García Group was born from the avant-garde vision, love of cooking, taste for good work and other passions shared by Dani García and his partners, Laura, and Javier Gutiérrez.

The group currently includes the restaurants BiBo (Madrid, Marbella, Tarifa, Doha and London), Lobito de Mar (Marbella, Madrid, and Doha), Dani Brasserie at the Four Seasons Hotel Madrid, Leña (Marbella and Madrid), Alelí, Kemuri and Tragabuches in Marbella, El Coleccionista in Madrid and La Chambre Bleue, the group’s latest opening, in Paris, which offers Mediterranean cuisine with international touches.

Mosh Group style and entertainment

The Mosh Group is behind some of the most exciting lifestyle destinations on the Costa del Sol, including Nido Beach Club and NU Downtown.  The group focuses on original ideas, executed with complete attention to detail. La Cabane Marbella is no exception. The beach club has been impeccably rebuilt, and the service, style and ambience are superb. Entertainment includes daily performances and resident DJs.

La Cabane is located in one of the most exclusive areas of the Costa del Sol, just a few minutes from Marbella and Puerto Banús close to the emblematic hotel Los Monteros Spa & Golf Resort *****.

Each and every one of Grupo Mosh’s establishments is an expression of lifestyle, a carefully crafted way of enjoying life in unique settings that complement each other perfectly. “We create very diverse leisure venues, each designed for its location and purpose, but always imbued with our philosophy, our way of doing things,” says Albert Beniflah, CEO, and founder.

Although each is different, the Mosh touch is visible in all of them, whether it’s a beach club, a nightclub, or a private club. “The concepts we have brought to Marbella are inspired by what we have seen and experienced abroad, but always adapted to the location and spirit of the local environment and following our own interpretation. Above all, this approach focuses on quality: of concept, décor, cuisine, music, service, ambience, and operational efficiency,” says Roberto Santa María, founding partner of the Group.

“Mosh’s success is due to the compelling atmosphere we create and the fact that each of our venues has a soul of its own,” says Albert Benifah.

In 2016 Mosh Fun Kitchen in Nueva Andalucía opened and become an instant hit. The success that followed for Mosh Group clubs paved the way for the creation of more unique venues in a variety of locations between Marbella and Estepona.

“We have created many amazing nights out in Marbella over the years, and this sense of fun in a great atmosphere is still at the heart of what we offer, and what makes us special,” says partner and founder Carmen Navarrete. “People love it.

Our amazing team, the unique environments, cuisine, music, and service all make Mosh a reference in the leisure sector of the leisure sector. We have a great team of talented and dedicated people,” says Dom Pastoressa, partner, and founder of Grupo Mosh, “but also because we look after them and offer them the chance to grow with the group.”

Discover the new boho chic beach vibe at Dune Beach, probably the most beautiful chiringuito beach restaurant in Andalusia. Set by the protected dunes on Marbella’s best beach, this new summer hideaway is the place to be for sun-worshipping foodies.

Created by the team behind Marbella’s globally renowned Ocean Club, this new beach destination is different, with a laid-back, understated ambience, and a design aesthetic that flawlessly blends with its natural surroundings, Dune Beach is unlike anything on this famous stretch of Costa del Sol coastline, writes Andrew Forbes (The Luxury Editor).

Gourmet Beach Club Destination

Gastronomy is equally important with the vibe here, and Chef Andres has created an impressive menu with Eastern Mediterranean touches, which the team beautifully presents. There are Lebanese touches and the presentation is a detail, including fresh pomegranate ‘jewels’ and flower petals on the dishes.

Cocktails

During our visit, the bar was led by Ricky, a talented mixologist that created two outstanding cocktails – the roasted Pineapple Acai Margarita (with tequila, agaze, Cointreau, lime juice and vibrant acai powder), and the Dune Mule (with Glenmorangie, Aldberg, ginger essence, lime, and ginger beer, presented in a smoked dome).

The Dune Beach experience begins as soon as you arrive, with the friendly valet parking team immediately taking care of the summer headache of parking. Then the host welcomes you with the offer of a drink at the bar. First impressions are amazing. The blond wood of the pergola and the architectural sub-tropical plants and desert cactus perfectly frame views of the dunes and sea beyond.

Dining

There are 4 main areas to Dune Beach; the dining deck shaded by sun sails and a timber pergola, the main bar area indoors, and also an outside bar lounge with sofas.

Then take the path through the dunes, covered in wild grasses and flowers to the beach where beautifully wooden sun beds shaded by thatched parasols await.

Guests can enjoy a beach menu of summer favourites like hot dogs burgers and tacos all served and presented in the signature sophistication of Dune Beach.

On the main dining deck, the menu is more extensive with starters of Mediterranean dips, pickles, and different types of breads, which are the perfect accompaniment to seasonal dishes like the Almadraba bluefin tuna, the Middle Eastern Flatbread with spiced lamb, or maybe the Wagyu Steak tartare.

The main dishes are equally tempting with a pearl cous cous salad roast butternut and orange salad, and my favourite the halloumi and watermelon salad. More substantial plates include tiger prawns, wild Atlantic salmon, Kobe Flank steak or lamb kebab, to name but a few.

Service is natural and attentive. The team is friendly and helpful. We were looked after by multi-lingual Thomas and his colleagues who made us feel very welcome.

Information

June 2023 was a milestone month for The Luxury Editor celebrating the publication’s 10th anniversary. So, to mark the occasion, co-founders, Ross and Chrystal enjoyed a sunny day at The Glenturret Distillery followed by lunch at the Michelin-starred The Glenturret Lalique Restaurant.

Provenance, prowess, and passion are the values that underpin The Glenturret, key qualities also closely valued at The Luxury Editor, so it seemed like a fitting place to celebrate our first decennial in business.

Introduction

Nestled deep in the beautiful Perthshire countryside is The Glenturret Distillery – Scotland’s oldest working distillery. Originally thought to have been established in 1775, a Swiss historian discovered that the distillery dates to 1763 and 260 years on and the brand continues to celebrate its rich heritage.

With over a quarter of a century of stories to tell, this Scottish whisky has withstood the test of time; different owners, different names, local to global ambitions but one thing has remained consistent, the priority is always ‘to preserve the traditional methods of distilling whisky’.

Now owned by the Lalique Group in partnership with Swiss entrepreneur Hansjörg Wyss, this ethos has been upheld and the global group, with an impressive portfolio of lifestyle brands, has ensured that The Glenturret remains a hand-operated distillery, with a focus on niche production of high-end quality whisky.

The setting of the distillery is picture-perfect; and like many places from days of old, it takes its name from its location. Sitting in the ‘hosh’ (meaning foot of the Glen) on the banks of the River Turret it’s an enchanting place, with magic (and steam from the still!) filling the air. And as our day unfolds, we discovered the magic is not just in the air. Read on to discover more.

The Chauffeur

The TLE Headquarters is in Edinburgh, approx. 1.5 hour’s drive from The Glenturret Distillery, however as our visit marked a special occasion, we wanted to make the most of our experience and sample the wonderful collection of whiskies we knew awaited. So, it posed the question ‘who would be the designated driver?’ The answer is Jim!

Jim? I hear you say, Jim, founder of MHH Executive Travel, was our charming and chatty chauffeur, who The Glenturret team had organised to take us to and from the distillery so we could fully embrace the whisky tasting experience.

At the agreed time, (in fact 10 mins prior) Jim arrived at the pick-up point in Edinburgh and greeted us with warmth and professionalism. With a spacious interior along with WIFI, charging points, mints (it was too hot for chocolates), chilled water and a Lalique magazine, the Audi A8L was going to be more than comfortable for the journey ahead.

As a driver to many famous names, Jim had lots of stories to share, which combined with the excitement of the day ahead and the magnificent rolling Scottish countryside made the drive pass very quickly.

The Distillery

The distillery is tucked away deep in the glen near Crieff, the road leading to the distillery is lined with olden trees and the distillery building itself lived up to my expectations in terms of old-world character. Inside, we were greeted by Jamie Morrison – Global Brand Ambassador and our guide for the day. Filled with knowledge and passion, Jamie began to tell us the story of Scotland’s oldest working distillery – right from the first rental document in 1763 to the present-day Lalique bottle, which is art deco in style, wider at the top to symbolise broad shoulders (strength) and incorporates the Murray clan crest in a nod to the original founders.

Each ‘room’ in the distillery is dedicated to an individual part of the distilling process and it was greatly impressive to see how the operations are very much manual and small-scale. Although some things have moved on, back in the day the 25kg sacks of barley would have been manually heaved into production, at least now they have a mechanism to do this strenuous task.

With each ‘room’ we visited came new-found knowledge (too much to share in this review – we recommend you pay a visit yourself to gain insight into the finer details) My favourite part of the tour was the washback where we popped our heads into the 3metre deep casks, made from Doulas Fir trees, and sniffed the potent liquid bubbling below. I won’t spoil the surprise by sharing my reaction – in case you do visit.

On our guided tour we met Ian, the Distillery Manager, who was engrossed in his daily, as they say in the industry, ‘cut by eye’ tasks ensuring the distillation process proceeded to perfection. Fiona MacDonald – Process Operator was busy rolling the hefty casks.

Fiona is the first female to join The Glenturret’s production team since Grace Gow who worked at The Glenturret in the 1860’s. Grace Gow sadly lost her life, when tending to the wash-back process and in 2022, The Glenturret launched their Grace Gow Scholarship programme, a six-month, fully funded, full-time position designed to allow a successful candidate to become fully immersed in the production process at Scotland’s Oldest Working Distillery.

Fiona was awarded this scholarship in July 2022, giving her a full-time position working alongside the production team to gain her General Certificate in Distillation (GCD) from The Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD).

After completion of The Grace Gow Scholarship, Fiona applied for a full-time Process Operator job, where she was successful, joining The Glenturret’s production team on a full-time basis since January 2023.

This scholarship scheme is a testament to the dedication of ‘preserving the traditional methods of distilling whisky’.

Glen and Turret the resident cats were also on the prowl. These two feline friends are pets with purpose; cats eat mice, mice eat barley. Enough said!

The Warehouse

After we finished the tour, we were taken to one of the private warehouses which is home to an abundance of ageing whisky – a truly impressive sight to behold.

Here we sampled a selection of the fine whiskies produced at the distillery; this included a non-age statement triple wood, 10-year-old (to mark our celebration) and the 30-year-old Prowess. Whilst we observed, nosed, swirled, and sipped Jamie talked us through the tasting notes, with each nuance highly evident.

The Glenturret Lalique Restaurant

After the whisky tasting, we strolled the short distance from the warehouse to the Michelin-starred The Glenturret Lalique Restaurant. This spectacular dining experience is the first of its kind in Scotland – a dedicated fine dining restaurant within a distillery. From outside it appears very unassuming, however, once inside it is a very different story.

Lalique, the French crystal, glassware, and lifestyle brand, is synonymous with luxury and the brand certainly lived up to its reputation at its namesake restaurant.

The décor is contemporary with a modern Scottish touch and the Lalique golden crystal barley motif throughout the furnishings is an impeccable finishing touch. The restaurant is spacious with a variety of seating formats and the ambience is refined.

The long bar is a key feature and not just a place to order a drink. It’s a gleaming work of art; with art deco decanters, shapely bottles of single malts, and a fine collection of rare wine adorning the highly polished shelves. Here guests can take a high stool and enjoy an informal whisky flight and engage in a casual or informative discussion with the knowledgeable bar team.

During our time at the restaurant, the clientele was a mix of nationalities and ages there for different occasions; with young (trendy!) couples enjoying a whisky flight, a large family of multiple generations cherishing a long lunch, mature couples savouring the elegant experience, and us!

Lead by acclaimed Scottish Chef, Mark Donald, whose culinary credentials include positions at Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles, Hibiscus, and Number One at The Balmoral his menu has been crafted to showcase the very best of local Scottish produce, innovative cooking styles and a touch of French panache.

The menu presents a seasonal and choice offering of dishes for each course.

To start with the helpful waitress suggested we opt for a selection of four or five dishes to share, one of which was smoked Padron peppers served with whipped roe and to my surprise I couldn’t get enough of them.

Main courses followed a meat, fish, and vegetarian format, I was torn between skate wing with black pudding or BBQ lamb. Decisions, decisions! They both looked tempting and to my surprise (I usually favour fish over meat) I opted for the BBQ lamb and I was so very pleased I did. BBQ skin coated melt-in-the-mouth tender and pink lamb, served with St George mushrooms, wilted spinach and a tantalising jus. I savoured every morsel.

Ross opted for new season asparagus and black truffle butter which he said was first class on the taste factor too.

Dessert comprised of a sweet or cheese option; I enjoyed the strawberry crème brulé, especially the crispy caramelized topping but the cheese board was the star of the dessert show; even Ross, a real cheese monster, was (almost!) overwhelmed by the platter presented before him.

The 600-bin wine list has an emphasis on French wine, with an impressive collection of rare and fine wines, including some from the private collection of co-owner Silvio Denz from his estates in Bordeaux, Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey in Sauternes and Chateau Faugeres in Saint-Emilion to name a few. Executive Sommelier, Julien Beltzung, whose impressive career includes time at the landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong is on hand to share his wealth of superlative knowledge.

The ambience is refined, the food more than exquisite and the service is entirely first-class.

Final Thoughts

What a truly wonderful day!!

Although whisky isn’t my drink of choice, it is impossible not to feel great admiration and appreciation for what the team (both past and present) has achieved here.

I highly recommend spending a full day at the distillery and its Michelin-starred restaurant and exploring every nook and cranny. Talk to the friendly team, work up an appetite (and thirst), and most of all take your time to understand the provenance, embrace the prowess and feel the passion.

Heesen Yachts

Established in 1978, by Frans Heesen, Heesen boasts one of the world’s most impressive shipbuilding legacies, with an unrelenting focus on quality, craftsmanship and innovation which produces some of the finest superyachts in the world.

Based in Oss, Holland – the home of yacht building – each Heesen superyacht is built in either aluminium or steel and uses proven engineering to deliver speed, style and fuel-efficient cruising.

The Heesen portfolio consists of three build concepts; i) Series ii) Smart Custom and iii) Full Custom with the owners’ preference in delivery time and level of personalisation dictating which concept is best suited to their needs.

  • Series: these yachts are fully engineered and designed ahead of time and available for sale during their construction. As they are built on speculation, delivery times are shortened however this means that customisation is limited and only possible for the interior and decks.
  • Smart Custom: these yachts are fully engineered above and below the main deck but can be offered with a custom designed superstructure and many other elements.
  • Full Custom: as the name suggests the owner is involved from the very start of the design process resulting in a truly unique yacht.

The Heesen client profile tends to fall within one of three categories:

  • Hospitality: larger yachts primarily used for parties, entertainment, corporate events and operated with a full crew. They tend to spend less time at sea than the other two client types.
  • Family: mid to larger-sized yachts, with a lifestyle focus for all the family. Spends quality time at sea.
  • Adventurer. This client buys a smaller super yacht, they visit far-off lands, and the yacht is used frequently. The owner tends to be an accomplished sailor and is younger than the other two client types. As the name suggests he/she enjoys an adventure.

Regardless of owner type or which build concept an owner chooses, with Heesen they are guaranteed a design that combines power and beauty as well as confidence and performance.

Super Yachts

A yacht is a vessel that has been designed for pleasure and is not linked to how it is powered which until recently I’d always thought was by sails. I suppose this is because my sailing experience was limited to the decks of a 42-foot Jeanneau sailing boat, winching the sails under my father’s command!

Officially, a super yacht is a yacht that is 24 metres or more and a mega yacht 80 meters or more in length – with Heesen delivering its largest to date at 70 metres. The Galactica Super Nova is famed for its advanced technology, design, and speed – it is one of the fastest superyachts in her class in the world. This nautical beauty also enjoyed life in the limelight when Beyonce and Jay-Z celebrated their birthdays onboard her predecessor, Galactica Star 65m.

The super yacht market is a niche one, as indicated by Heesen’s entry-level price tag of 100 million euros. With approximately only 7,068 people of the global population of UHNWIs having more than USD 500m net worth (2021), the pool of eligible candidates remains quite small. Following studies made by SuperYacht Times there are approximately 5,396 yachts within the global super yacht fleet (of 30+ metres) in operation (2021) – although the growth rate since 2012 is 12%.

Source: The State of Yachting 2022, SuperYacht Times July 2022

These are impressive facts and figures which were about to become even more meaningful as I ventured on my very own Heesen experience.

The Heesen Experience

We (six journalists) arrived at the impressive and expansive shipyard in Oss (approx. 1.5 hours’ drive) from Amsterdam and made our way into the sleek reception area we were greeted by the team, issued a safety briefing guide and fitted with our safety shoes (more on this later) before making our way to the equally sleek board room.

Market Insight

We received a warm welcome from Arthur Brouwer, CEO at Heesen Yachts, who introduced the company and some of his senior team members. The board table was laid out with Smythson notepad, premium welding gloves and a selection of handmade chocolates. A considerate and quality touch.

Following a fascinating presentation on Heesen and the superyacht market we were then given the opportunity to take a seat at the design table where we joined Frank Laupman, Yacht Designer and Founder of Omega Architects. Frank spent much of his career (20 years+) working alongside Heesen and is now an independent designer who collaborates with many shipyards. Frank’s attention to detail and intuition for design, quality and nautical expertise are exceptional. He is a true master of his trade!

Design Process

To gain a deep understanding of how the design process works, as well as a full appreciation for the capabilities of Heesen, we were asked to take part in a workshop where each of the group members were given a persona from part of a wealthy family and asked to design a yacht that would suit everyone’s whims. Each member had their own requirements – all of which had to be factored into the overall design and build. For example, I was the ‘daughter’ who had just achieved her pilot licence so needed a place to land a helicopter, my father was an ex-Olympic swimmer, so a pool was on his wishlist, whilst my brother was a fashion designer who demanded a catwalk; to name just a few.  Although this role play activity was super-fun the key-takeaway from the process was simply anything is possible! The team are so knowledgeable, experienced and innovative that they can make their clients’ sea-faring dreams a reality.

This was followed by a masterclass in seaworthiness and how to test the design to see how it would fare on the water. It starts with a beautiful, handcrafted model of the vessel which then undergoes stringent tests and analysis around weight, displacement and many more technical aspects that I won’t even begin to describe. It was mind-blowing!

Work in Progress

Heesen produces only a few fully custom yachts at a time and after a tour of the shipyard, it is clear to see why. The level of planning, detail, manufacturing and manual resources that goes into the production of a super yacht was, for a layman such as me, beyond comprehension. Each piece of the super-size jigsaw was given the utmost care and attention.

To keep the team on track each project has a clock counting down the number of years, months, days, hours and seconds until delivery.

We then met some of the welding team, who talked us through their part in the construction – again the passion and pride they take in their work was more than obvious. We even attempted to master the art ourselves; best is to say I won’t be giving up my day job!!

Delivery Time

After the manual work was over, we met with Perry Van Hirtum, Manager of Interior Design at Heesen. What a job! Perry led us through a visit of a completed semi-custom yacht that is due to be delivered to a client. With our shoes securely covered we were guided through this unique vessel for a special preview. It was a truly breathtaking experience.

For privacy reasons, we couldn’t take any pictures on-board but take my word for it – everything from the owner’s suite to the crew cabins (and every detail in between) were of exceptional quality, style and design.

Super by Name. Super by Nature

Our visit to the shipyard was a truly memorable experience which has given me a full appreciation of why these stunning sea-faring vessels hold the title of super yachts.

Friends of Heesen Yachts

The day before our tour of Heesen, we enjoyed some leisure time in Amsterdam, all kindly co-ordinated by our hosts at Heesen Yachts.

Our rendezvous point was the lively and hip area of Nieuwmarkt en Lastage where we received a warm welcome from the team including Mark Van Heffen (Marketing Director) who has been working at Heesen for more than 15 years. Despite his length of tenure with Heesen he still possesses a freshness and zest for the brand which was matched by his knowledge and experience.

As we were unable to take to the waters on a Heesen Yacht (in our dreams!) the team had arranged for us to experience a tour of Amsterdam on a Wajer-38. Named Chill Out, she is a sleek looking 38ft day yacht that can easily power across the water at 45 knots. With a spacious walk-in aft, large three-person sun deck and a uniquely designed cockpit that gives the helmsman a perfect 360-degree vision.

Wajer and Heesen often collaborate together as they have similar values and clientele. Many of Heesen’s clients opt for a Wajer tender or day boat to run alongside their bigger pleasure boat.

Link to brand spotlight piece.

After our adventures on the Amsterdam canals had come to an end, we then took a short car journey to MOS Amsterdam – a fine dining, Michelin Star restaurant, located at the tip of the IJdok. With stunning views across Amsterdam and a bright and modern interior, it is a superb place to enjoy a refined yet relaxing dining experience. The restaurant was founded by partners Henry Pattiwael van Westerloo and Egon van Hoof in 2015 and it’s easy to see why it is such a popular choice with both regulars and new visitors to the city. The food, the service and the ambience is first class.

We enjoyed a tasting menu, that comprised five courses and show-stopping hors d’oeuvres, with delights such as; ‘Dutch asparagus with kohlrabi, cockles, razor clams and a light fenugreek hollandaise’ and ‘Lamb saddle and neck with a cream from Pierre Robert, muhammara, turnip and gravy with magnolia’. Each course was beautifully presented (in fact some looked too good to eat but we did!) and their beauty was only outshined by their flavour.

Final Thoughts

The two days I spent with the Heesen crew were absolutely brilliant – a hugely interesting, memorable and privileged experience!

Read on to discover more about an elopement to beautiful, romantic Florence.

I met my husband in January 2020, six weeks before lockdown. Like everyone, we didn’t see friends or family much during the pandemic (or at all during the first 10 weeks); we didn’t have the normal opportunities to be ‘us’ in the world, so most people weren’t able to travel on our relationship journey with us.

When we started planning our wedding, it just didn’t feel right to have the ‘big show’. So, on a dank and dismal February afternoon, I let my mind drift further away than I’d been in two years.

Florence. An elopement to beautiful, romantic Florence.

After floating the idea by both families and receiving a big ‘Yes!’ from both, we had two return flights booked for a week in July; our secret squirrel planning had begun.

I’d visited Florence once before, staying at Villa La Massa, a 16th-century Medici villa, home to Tuscan aristocracy for hundreds of years before it was turned into a luxury hotel in 1953.

My memory of the hotel was sitting in the restaurant terrace overlooking the river Arno, watching the calm waters running slowly towards the rolling Chianti Rufina hills, a glass of Prosecco in hand, the golden, mellow mid-Autumn sun shining; my mind slowly hypnotised by the nearby wood smoke drifting downstream against a backdrop of endless vineyards and Cypress trees.  It felt like one of life’s perfect moments.

It’s a special place. David Bowie and Iman had their wedding here; so if it’s good enough for the Thin White Duke…

I didn’t want to say ‘I do’ and then fly off and lie on a sun lounger. I wanted to wed the love of my life in the serenity of a Tuscan Iris garden and embark upon an adventure we’d remember forever, soaking up all of the cultural experiences and treasures of one of the most romantic cities in the world.

Read our guide to the best hotels in Florence

Villa La Massa sits majestically in 25 acres of lush gardens with lemon trees, olive groves and iris flowers (Florence’s official flower), just five miles downstream from Florence at the gateway to the Chianti region. It’s perfectly placed for a tranquil escape with easy access to Florence and a variety of cultural and gastronomical experiences on your terracotta doorstep.

The hotel has 51 rooms, each one with a unique style, layout and interior, spread throughout its five properties. Our home for the week is a traditional style suite in The Mill with sitting room and terrace which stretches the length of the 50sq m space. The feel is rustic elegance; the room’s colour palette reflects the hotel’s Renaissance splendour with hues of rich burgundy, warm terracotta and muted teal running through the interiors.

Exposed beams, traditional shutters and antique furniture create an authentic, Tuscan feel with a charming embrace of colour and personality running through the three rooms which make up the suite. The level of discreet, understated luxury and the craftmanship in the interiors is one of the many reasons why Villa La Massa has the accolade of being one of the Leading Hotels of the World.

The hotel has two restaurants; Restaurant Il Verrocchio is an elegant, refined but entirely comfortable and relaxed dining experience. The menu offers a choice of gourmet Italian and Mediterranean dishes and some must-try Tuscan specialities such as the wild boar tortellini.

Dine by candlelight, embracing the dusky warmth of day while taking in the spectacular panorama of Tuscan countryside, the River Arno gently flowing by. Return in the morning for an al fresco breakfast in the sunshine with fresh juices, fruit, local meats and cheeses, cereals, breads, smoked salmon, scrambled eggs and of course Prosecco.

L’Oliveto Bistrot is the hotel’s daytime restaurant, a former barn impeccably restored, offering a comfortable and relaxed indoor and outdoor casual dining experience on the poolside terrace.

If you can bear to tear yourself from the warm breeze and Tuscan sunshine, take a visit to the subterranean spa, exercise in the state-of-the-art gym (if you must) and experience the sauna, steam room, water therapy and relaxation room. Treatments use products inspired by the fragrances of Villa La Massa’s gardens, made by the famous Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, which dates back to 1221.

A few days of gentle wind down and our wedding day is upon us. We’ve chosen to get married late morning for the best light and to avoid the intense heat of the afternoon sun. Our ceremony is short and meaningful; a lifetime memory created in a moment. After a Champagne Zoom to family, our arrival on Cloud 9 is complete; we’re out of our wedding finery, into something much cooler and heading towards Florence for an afternoon and evening of adventure, discovery and to soak up the romance and passion which the city exudes in abundance.

We’re lucky to be in town for ‘Donatello, The Rennaisance’, a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition reconstructing the career of the Rennaisance master; the first exhibition devoted to the sculptor’s work for 40 years. We float around the Palazzo Strozzi in our newly wedded bubble, feeling otherworldly in our bliss.

What we want to do next is eat, so we go for a sandwich. Yes, a sandwich. Forget Pret, this is next-level lunching. All’Antico Vinaio is the last word in sandwiches and one of the most-reviewed eateries in the world. The doorstops to your sandwich of dreams is schiacciata, a flatbread similar to focaccia but thinner and chewier. I go for La Boss (in keeping with my new position in life…) – prosciutto, pecorino cheese, and truffle cream. Truffle everything will become part of your life.

A meander along the banks of the Arno follows; late afternoon is a dreamy time of day in Florence. There’s the anticipation of the evening ahead and a mellowness which emanates from the golden, ochre buildings and the peachy skies. Negroni o’clock comes and goes as we while away a couple of hours people-watching at Café Gilli, the oldest café in Florence and a must-visit (don’t forget to take a tin of Orange and Chocolate Biscotti di Prato to bring a bit of La Dolce Vita into your desk day coffee breaks).

We choose La Garga for our wedding celebration for two, a well-known Florentine family-run restaurant, famous for its colourful décor, celebratory vibe, classic Tuscan dishes and legendary cheesecake.

We talk for hours, no distractions and float out to the twinkling lights of Florence with two happy hearts.

La Boss was right. Florence was the best possible destination for our elopement; a new chapter with many Italian adventures ahead.

The experts at cazenove+loyd understand exactly what it takes to deliver a journey beyond expectations. Using their unrivaled knowledge, they create the most exciting and thrilling experiences accompanied by the world’s best guides.

From riding with Mongolian eagle hunters to walking with emperor penguins in Antarctica, below are 12 extraordinary travel experiences, which will allow you to explore some of the world’s most exciting destinations in the best way possible.

Walking among emperor penguins in Antarctica

Imagine standing on a seemingly endless icy plain among more than 6,000 emperor penguins and their fluffy, young chicks, surrounded by Antarctica’s stark and otherworldly scenery. Here, the landscape is white as far as the eye can see. These surprisingly tall penguins – up to 4ft high – are totally unafraid of humans and come within a few metres of you, immersing you in the noise, commotion and the sheer beauty of it all. Nearby, elephant seals and fur seals laze, Antarctic skuas scavenge and southern giant petrels fly overhead. Due to the penguins’ remote habitat, this is one of the greatest and least-seen wildlife events on the planet. At night, you can camp nearby and wake up to the sounds of these incredible animals chattering away. For keen wildlife photographers, this may be the ultimate experience.

Staying in an airstream camper van on Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni salt flats

Spend two blissful nights in an airstream camper van on Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni salt flats, with no phone signal and only your travel companions for company. Nothing beats the unique and breathtaking sunset you will witness here and your guide will take you to some areas of water for incredible reflection shots. This is very special as the wind carries the rainwater over the flats, particularly at night, so water can be tricky to find. There is always a fully stocked bar in your camper and your amazing chef will cook up some seriously tasty meals using local quinoa. You won’t see anyone else for two days.

Climbing to sacred heights in Ethiopia

Ethiopia is like no other country on the African continent. The layers of history and religion shared by our local guides are phenomenal. One of the most memorable experiences here is climbing up to Abuna Yemata Guh, a small rock-hewn church at 2,580m in the Gheralta Mountains of the Tigray region, which can only be reached on foot. Part of the way up the sandstone pinnacle – vertical in places – must be ascended barefoot, with amazing local guides showing you where to put your hands and feet. Women make this treacherous climb with babies on their backs but to the amateur it is challenging and exhilarating. Halfway up the cliff, you walk along a narrow ledge with a sheer drop on one side to reach the church. It is certainly heart-pounding, but the views are awe-inspiring and it is breathtaking to see the wall paintings, dating back to the 5th century, hidden inside this little church known as Ethiopia’s ‘chapel in the sky’.

A private exploration of Mehrangarh Fort in Rajasthan

Jodhpur’s Mehrangarh Fort, with its unique and impressive setting, closes to members of the public and tourists at 5pm. However, it’s possible to enjoy exclusive access to the fort if you know the right people. Having driven up to the majestic fort, whose sheer size is jaw-dropping, you are met with a glass of champagne and views over the whole Blue City. It is a real privilege to be greeted and shown around by the head curator, who has worked all over the world. After a brief introduction, he will guide you through the fort’s beautiful, intricate rooms, giving you special access to the historical royal bedrooms and private rooms normally closed to the public. It is an unforgettable experience to be able to wander around after hours with this fascinating man.

Flying to Everest in Nepal

Flying by helicopter to Kalapatthar, one of the best spots for views of Everest, is perhaps the most memorable travel experience in Nepal. As you soar over huge lakes and ice falls still dwarfed by the surrounding mountains on your way to Kalapatthar by helicopter, your pilot guide points out the skyline and the infamous Khumbu Pass. The views are staggering. You may spot a handful of people climbing – just tiny dots, their minute size demonstrating the magnitude and greatness of these magnificent peaks. Descending to 5,300m, you land and leap down onto the snow. The air is so thin here that you can only stay for five to 10 minutes at this incredible spot. The clock ticks and the helicopter blades keep spinning, their noise adding to the dramatic effect of the scene. Standing under the strong sun, you may feel slightly giddy from the altitude as you look up at Everest standing defiantly before you. These mountains are enchanting and powerful and being in their presence is an adrenaline-fuelled experience. You cannot fail to be moved by the sheer scale of these peaks and by the stories of those who have reached their summits.

Experiencing history unfolding in Israel

Travel north in Israel to the Golan Heights and Mount Bental, from where you will admire stunning views as far as Syria. Sadly, this is an area that has been repeatedly battered by conflict throughout history. From here, set off on an exhilarating experience: a two-hour jeep ride through an agricultural kibbutz and then off-road into the demilitarised zone along the Syrian border to see Israeli army bunkers. Your very experienced guide here is ex-military and it is only through his connections that it’s possible to cross into this area. His guiding and knowledge are second to none and he will enlighten you on Israel’s culture and its relations with its neighbours. Abandoned Syrian villages are visible not too far in the distance during this fascinating and sobering experience that really brings this terrible conflict to life.

Meeting the Māori in New Zealand

It is a great privilege to experience Māori culture and its practices on Mount Titiraupenga, in the Waikato region of New Zealand’s North Island. You are met by Delani, who will walk with you through this protected private land owned by his tribe, the local Ngāti Tūwharetoa. As you stroll, you are likely to hear the booming call of the rare, native Kokako bird who loyally made this hallowed area its breeding ground. A highlight of your time here is the pōwhiri, a traditional Māori welcome. It is best not to say too much about this incredible experience, but it goes deep into the spirituality of the Māori and is something you will never forget. Spend the day in these mystical forests with members of the tribe, learning about this very special and distinct culture, connected so deeply with the rhythms of the natural world.

Riding with Mongolian eagle hunters

It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to travel to Bayan-Ölgii, a small aimag in western Mongolia, during the Sagsai Eagle Festival. The excitement starts in the early morning as you ride the five kilometres from your camp to Eagle Hill. In the chilly dawn, plumes of dust rise from galloping horses, all converging on the same point. Through the haze, a mass of vehicles, people, camels and horses looms into view. The atmosphere is bustling. Despite it being a hobby for most of the year, eagle hunters take great pride in their birds and the annual festival is taken very seriously. While the eagles are, without a doubt, the main event, the festival also allows a chance for the skill of riders to be tested. By far the most exciting and unusual competition is known as bushkashi (the less exotic-sounding translation being ‘tug of war with a goat’). ‘Kiss and Catch’ is another favourite, involving a husband-and-wife team galloping down the track, the former attempting to dodge the latter’s enthusiastic whipping. Besides copious quantities of Mongolian vodka, Kazakhs celebrate with music afterwards, and when the games are over, you are treated to hours of Mongolian folk songs about blue skies and the homeland. This festival stands out for its raw authenticity: it is an unrehearsed, unchoreographed chaos of competition and celebration. If you’re looking to get off the beaten track and do something really different, nothing compares.

Swimming with manta rays in Indonesia’s Raja Ampat Islands

Scuba-diving with mantas in Raja Ampat, one of the most sought-after places to dive on the planet, has to be up there at the top of most diving enthusiasts’ wish lists. Glide effortlessly between glorious reefs that are alive with fish until the waters darken with shadows. As you rotate towards the surface, you are awestruck by the giant manta rays soaring above your head within touching distance and dancing in the streaming frames of light. Take the time to rest on the soft, sandy ocean floor and watch them gracefully swoop around you like birds of the sea. Being in the company of these safe, curious and inquisitive creatures is an incredibly humbling experience, and one you will remember forever.

Sleeping under the stars in the African bush

Spend a night high on a ridge of the Zambezi Escarpment in Lower Zambezi National Park. It is a matchless and nerve-tingling experience to snuggle down on a comfortable mattress suspended a metre above the ground, with nothing but a mosquito net between you and the carpet of stars overhead. This contraption, known as a Tentsile Tree Tent, takes the ‘sleepout experience’ one step further. The sounds of the night ring loud in your ears as you try to fall asleep: lions call, hyenas laugh and the soporific humming orchestra of the nightjars, cicadas and tree frogs reverberate in the night. The rosy glow of dawn gently wakes you, as the golden orb rises above the rugged horizon and the African bush begins to stir, with white-browed robin chats, tropical boubous and other birds beginning their morning chorus in the nearby miombo woodland, dotted with amarula, tamarind and rain trees. The spectacular view of the valley below is breathtakingly beautiful. On a clear day after the rains, you may see herds of elephant, buffalo, zebra and antelope in the lush valley below, with the Zambezi River and Zimbabwe beyond.

Exploring Osaka, Japan’s Kitchen

From family-run ramen bars to tiny sushi counters tucked away in basement mazes, the gastronomic choices in Japan are endless. Osaka, the city known as ‘Japan’s Kitchen’, is no exception. Your guide will lead you down a dimly lit alleyway lined with little cafes and unassuming, narrow doorways and into a small shop where a husband and wife are making taiyaki, a fish-shaped sandwich with red-bean paste inside. Next is Kuromon Market, where you can try endless strange morsels, including miniature octopus skewers stuffed with a quail’s eggs. Interesting to say the least! You must also try momiji tempura, which are deep-fried maple leaves. Tasty, light and very moreish. Your final stop will be Kuromon Ichiba, a food market that serves up some of the freshest fish in Japan. Your local guide will almost certainly wish to dispel the myth that the best sushi is always found in Tokyo, leading you straight to Maguroya Kurogin. This is the first shop in the Kansai region to sell Pacific tuna, and a great place to just sit at the bar and watch the fish being sliced and served in bright-pink blocks to a never-ending queue of eager diners.

Learning from a Head Lama in Bhutan

Meeting one of the Head Lamas in Bhutan is a mind-expanding and enlightening experience. As you walk among the forest of fluttering prayer flags, you see the snow-clad mountain peaks of the Himalayas laid out before you with the country’s highest peak, Mt. Masanggang, in all its glory. Upon entering the temple, you are guided into a small room, where a bright-eyed and smiling monk stands to greet you, and you sit together on his blanketed floor. The room is covered with colourful tapestries, books, presents from guests, holy offerings, prayer beads and photographs of his pilgrimages. This is his place for prayer and rest, and you can’t help but feel at home but also very privileged to be there. The Lama will tell you about his life and answer your questions graciously over milk tea and kabzey and zow (Bhutanese snacks of biscuits and roasted rice sweetened with butter and sugar). It is incredibly inspirational to learn about the philosophies at the heart of Buddhism from such a holy man.

This is a truly original and remarkable spa experience. The setting is magical, the style relaxed, calming, and unpretentious.

One of my favourite experiences was the underground saltwater pool, where you can float unaided – it’s just the most amazing feeling!

For something truly original there is an ancient marble bath where you and your partner can soak in a bath of ‘wine,’ whilst enjoying a glass of wine and a selection of cheese – in a private, candle lit room. How romantic is that?
