In an increasingly rapacious Dubai hotel scene, there are very few properties that not only continue to reign over the hearts and minds of guests but also thrive along the way. Shangri-La Dubai does all that and more with a devotion to detail that is exquisite. Misbaah Mansuri tries it out – read on for the full review

Set The Scene

Stepping into the recently revamped 42-storey sanctuary, I am immediately enveloped by a sense of opulence. The lobby, a grand atrium adorned with majestic Lasvit chandeliers, casts a warm glow over royal burgundy and gold hues that promise a stay fit for royalty. It was love at first sight. The check-in desk featured an intriguing backdrop – a striking art piece composed of hundreds of books in a babel of languages, another fascinating touch. As I lingered, the lounge buzzed with the genteel clink of afternoon tea, while the hum of business deals floated down from the first-floor restaurants. From the golden pillars to the dramatic floral arrangements that crowned them alongside cosy grey armchairs. What I love about this place is that despite its grandeur, there is a comforting familiarity in the air.

The Rooms

Perched between sky and city on the upper echelons of the tower, I stayed in the hotel’s Picture-Perfect Rooms which are a cocoon of luxuriousness offering a cinematic sweep of Dubai’s skyline. My corner retreat comes with floor-to-ceiling windows framing the Burj Khalifa in a tableau so vivid it feels within reach. Plush carpets, a marble-encased bathroom, and a colour palette that whispered luxury in shades of grey and gold set the tone for a sumptuous stay ahead. The pièce de resistance was the Polaroid camera in the room, perfect to capture the sweeping vistas, while the L’Occitane amenities added a touch of Provencal charm to the urban oasis. Meditative colouring postcards provided a moment of zen, inviting me to pause and reflect amid the opulence, alongside the local art in the room that provides a reverent nod to the region. What makes these rooms stand out are their amenities which are a carefully crafted collection to pamper and purify — a Briiv Air Purifier to cleanse the space, silken Yukata robes and slippers, and indulgences like bath salts and hydrating creams to rejuvenate after a day in the city.

Amenities and Facilities

The CHI Spa offers some exhilarating Arabian-inspired spa indulgences that pay homage to the land with local essences of dates, coffee, and rhassoul mud and other signature treatments. The hotel also features health club amenities like the gym, sauna, and plunge pool, among others. Poolside on the fourth floor, the vibe is irresistibly Instagrammable, with chic white sunbeds and vibrant pink towels set against the Burj Khalifa’s backdrop. As night falls, the space transforms into a lively hub, with shisha, music, and a DJ setting the evening’s tone.

Dining

One of our favourite parts of the stay has to be the culinary powerhouse of the property. Hoi An, the Vietnamese gem, dazzled us with its crispy rolls, a delicate crunch giving way to the umami richness of shrimp and shiitake. The curries were a masterclass in balance bursting with robust flavours that have a certain depth to them.

Brunch at Shang Palace became the highlight of my foodie escapades. The crispy prawns, enrobed in mango mayonnaise, were a culinary epiphany, their tender meat ensconced with the sauce’s sweet zestiness. The golden garlic prawns come alive with just the right tinge of spice, igniting the palate without overwhelming it. The fried soft-shell crab was another standout dish, its crisp exterior giving way to the succulent sweetness of the crab within. The gentle heat of the spice brought a depth of flavour that elevated the dish to gold standards, creating an interesting interplay of texture and taste. The Dunes Café presented a breakfast that was a spectacle of choice and quality, think pastries, flaky and golden, fresh smoothies, and a globe-trotting array of hot and cold dishes.  A floating breakfast at Ikandy Ultralounge is the stuff of Instagram dreams and goes heartily recommended!

Final thoughts

At Shangri-La Dubai, luxury is palpable in every little detail, from staff that is genuinely gracious and goes the extra mile to make your day, to restaurants that are true masterclasses in gastronomy. With its old-world charm doused in unmistakable luxury, here is a property that glows from within, even among the ever-expanding empire of Dubai hotels.

Centrally located on the west coast of Okinawa’s main island, the Intercontinental Manza Beach is the ideal spot for exploring, or simply relaxing in the tropical surroundings. It is clear to see why Okinawa is a favourite with Japanese holiday makers. A two hour hop from the mainland, and you’re in an idyllic Pacific haven.

Viv, one of The Luxury Editor’s respected roving reporters has recently moved from Scotland to Japan so is taking advantage of exploring this exciting and diverse island country in East Asia. Read on to discover more about her recent stay in Okinawa.

With Japan as our new home, it was time for a family holiday. We had five nights to fill so after some extensive Googling, it seemed Okinawa was the place to go, closely followed by South Korea which will be next on the list. The two main airports on the group of 160 islands are Naha, on the largest island, and Ishigaki. Ishigaki is a quieter, less developed island, but we were swayed by Naha due to the flights direct from our home city of Kobe. Solaseed Air provided us with a super efficient and pleasant flight, just under two hours from Japan’s seventh largest city. From the metropolis of high-rise buildings, industrial ports and the fast-paced city living, we had found our escape.

Pacific Perfection

Often described as the Hawaii of Japan, the tropical influences are evident everywhere you go. The ideal climate for sun-seekers, the prefecture enjoys 20+ degrees all year round – although like most of Japan, the summer is stiflingly hot. The end of October was perfect with temperatures in the mid-20s and balmy evenings to boot. Okinawa was occupied by the Americans throughout World War II and it retains some influences from that period, however, it is still very much Japan, with the temples, tea houses, cuisine and culture.

Okinawans are known for living long, healthy lives. They attribute this to the ‘nuchi gusui’, meaning ‘food is medicine’. Watch what you put in your body, how it makes you feel and how you eat. Whilst the introduction of a more westernised diet has put pay to their ‘blue zone’ status, the traditional cuisine remains bursting with flavoursome, healthy delights.

Accommodation

To tick off a variety of criteria including 1. not too far from the airport, 2. plenty to entertain the kids (11 and 13) and 3. a definite feel of luxury, we went with a recommendation of the Intercontinental Manza Beach. The website said the two-bedded room would sleep our brood, so we went with it… It was a bit of a squeeze. The two beds definitely did not fit four, but we got an extra bed (at cost) for the room and it was very comfortable. The bedrooms are airy, with an endearing simplicity. Instead of robes, we enjoyed snuggling up together in our matching hotel pyjamas and slippers, which added to the fuzzy feeling of an extended family sleepover. The balcony stole the show. Uninterrupted views to the beach and out to the dreamy clear blue sea, created the perfect start to every day.

The Activities

Here’s why the hotel was the ideal stay for luxury + relaxation. For parents, relaxation usually involves your kids being well-occupied. And they were. One of Japan’s largest inflatable obstacle courses kicked off our beach fun. For around £20 you can enjoy unlimited access for the day. We had stayed in St Lucia last summer and enjoyed a smaller version at the Bay Gardens Resort and Spa, so knew it would be a hit. The marble, a large inflatable chair, dragged and bumped along by a jet ski provided a burst of adrenaline, while the slower pace of the kayaks, was perfect for tropical fish spotting in the crystal clear waters.

The sandy beach is a very pleasant five-minute walk from the hotel and also has a large pool set back from the shore so you can easily base yourself there for the day. A small on-site cafe providing street food-style sustenance. You can also opt for a poolside spot at the main pool in front of the hotel. It was quiet (we were outside normal Japanese school holidays) and the expansive pool allowed for endless ball games, whilst not interrupting the serious swimmers.

The multi-award-winning spa treatment menu was divine, with treatments to tick every box. Alongside the treatment rooms, we found the Japanese-style bath. Hugely popular in the country, spas, or hot spring onsens, are to be considered a key part of a healthy lifestyle. Like all onsens, there are strict rules, including no clothing at all, and no talk of politics! Something that takes some getting used to if you aren’t a natural exhibitionist.

Gastronomy

Travelling off-season can limit options for dining in hotels. The onsite Italian restaurant was closed, and two of the a la carte options were only open for a couple of the nights we were on the island, however we still ate incredibly well. The main hotel cafe, Ocean Cafe, was our go-to for lunches. Salads, burgers, poke bowls, pasta – it had all the favourites. I would denote here that special dietary requirements are tricky in Japan. It is not a requirement to state allergens or whether something is vegan/veggie/contains fish etc. I’m a veggie and eating out has been a challenge. Thankfully at this hotel, while the veggie options in the cafe were limited, they understand the concept and are able to adapt items.

I was thrilled to find that Unkai, the Japanese fine-dining experience and the main Aquabelle restaurant, both had vegan menus, a real treat. At Unkai you can enjoy the traditional kaiseki style of cooking. If you’re thinking of sushi, think again. Kaiseki is a type of artistic culinary experience that balances the taste, texture, and presentation, a refined local tasting menu with floral touches.

The evening buffet was surprisingly good. Over and above the extensive a la carte vegan menu, the carnivores in the party lucked out with beautifully cooked local beef and fish, flavoursome stews and karaage (fried chicken), a staple for my kids since we arrived. Along with an array of patisserie-style desserts – always dangerous in a buffet!

We wandered off-site for one night and stumbled upon one of the finest Japanese restaurants we have eaten at in the last few months. A 12-minute walk from the hotel and we found the hidden gem, Toto Chanpuru. Creative dining combined with old-fashioned Okinawan cuisine, including locally caught sashimi. A stylish layout, 12  ‘dining rooms’ are separated by wooden blinds, or you can enjoy sitting on the floor in the main restaurant. Incredibly friendly and accommodating, with the freshest ingredients, beautifully presented, we only wish we’d found it sooner.

Okinawa definitely got the thumbs up. The hotel was perfect for our requirements, and we will certainly be back to explore some more of the archipelago.

Pablo Picasso changed art for ever. An extraordinary innovator, constantly experimenting and creating, he has left an exceptional artistic legacy. He was born in Malaga, Southern Spain in 1881 and spent his early life in this sun-splashed Mediterranean city.
To mark the 50 anniversary of Picasso’s passing, Anantara Villa Padierna Palace, Marbella has created an extraordinary guest stay, ‘Luxury Retreat: A Palatial Stay Inspired by Picasso’ that celebrates the art, culture, and cuisine of his beloved Malaga province. Here The Luxury Editor shares with you the inside track on what to expect.

First impressions of the Anantara Villa Padierna Palace Marbella are impressive. It’s a palatial property, set in a golf valley, with views over the greens towards the sea. It is Anantara’s flagship resort in Southern Spain. Sheltered by majestic mountains, this Mediterranean resort of suites and villas (The Obama Villa once hosted the former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama) is close to some of the country’s most beautiful ‘white villages’, the prestigious town of Marbella, and the sparkling Mediterranean sea. Expect a compelling combination of European elegance with upscale gastronomy across multiple dining venues, as well as exceptional leisure facilities including a super-stylish beach & racquet club, an award-winning spa and championship golf courses.

Choosing the ‘Luxury Retreat: A Palatial Stay Inspired by Picasso’ is probably the finest way to experience much of what makes Anantara Villa Padierna so special. In addition to a stay in a palatial room, guests enjoy:

  • Return airport transfers from Malaga Airport
  • Picasso welcome amenities
  • Spa treatment at the Anantara Spa
  • Malaga Picasso tour experience
  • Exclusive Picasso Dining by Design experience for two

Check-in and suite

Arriving at the resort, and entering the lofty lobby of the Anantara Marbella, one’s experience truly begins. This magnificent light-filled atrium features seasonal floral masterpieces. We arrived in autumn, with the theme brought to life with warm blooms, richly textured leaves, and fruit.

Here check-in is a comfortable affair, seated in dappled sunlight, sipping fine cava, and enjoying a chocolate treat, fashioned as an olive, evocative of one of Andalucia’s most prized gourmet products, extra virgin olive oil.

The treats continue as one arrives at the suite, with welcome handmade chocolates presented an artist’s palette, and a limited edition print of a charming sketch of the Anantara Villa Padierna by renowned artist, Jorge Parra, with his personal homage to Picasso.

It’s a delightful, and unique gesture and sets the scene for this palatial stay inspired by Pablo Picasso. The suite makes us feel like VIPs, with its majestic decoration of sparkling crystal chandeliers, fine art, antiques, and French Windows that open to the lush gardens. It’s the perfect place to take a moment and relax.

Spa & Wellness

Seeking tranquillity and rejuvenation is reason enough to come to Anantara Villa Padierna, home to one of Spain’s most elegant spas, styled like classic baths, with a touch of Roman flair.

As part of this guest package, one can enjoy a signature spa massage. The treatment rooms are set apart from the pool and wet areas, so they are particularly peaceful. Expect a comfortable and wide treatment table, and experienced therapists.  The whole experience is world-class.

Gastronomy

Yet, the real reason I’m here is to be immersed in Picasso’s Malaga. This begins with the fine dining. There’s plenty of choice, with the Eastern Mediterranean delights of Óla Beirut, the Japanese refinement of 99 Sushi Bar & Restaurant, and the elegance of La Veranda.

You can read more about La Veranda’s classic dishes here.

Yet it is La Loggia that is calling with its celebration of local Andalucian and Spanish cuisine.  Here guests and visitors can experience a contemporary Spanish menu inspired by favourite dishes of Picasso, as well as local specialities. From a typical Malaga salad of cod and orange, a velvety ‘porra’ tomato, bread, and olive oil cream, to hearty fish balls.

This is sophisticated comfort food that truly reflects the destination and the way Picasso would have eaten in Spain.

Private Dining

The culinary highlight of the stay was our Dining by Design experience. Anantara’s private dining is extraordinary. Anantara Villa Padierna is a magical property, with so many special places to enjoy private dining from under the stars, to shaded terraces. In the autumn and winter, the elegant private salons make for a cosy and stylish venue.

The Picasso-inspired private dining is a delight, with a table setting evocative of the artist’s studio, with paint brushes and even small wooden pain paint palettes for the bread.

The dishes again reflect the heritage of Picasso’s southern Spain. A dedicated waiter achieved the perfect balance for us between attentive service and leaving us to enjoy each course in private – it was a dream.

Picasso’s Malaga

Malaga city has emerged as one of Southern Europe’s most dynamic cities, with a vibrant contemporary art scene, and a cultural wealth that includes the renowned Museo Picasso Málaga. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the museum has attracted international attention for its remarkable collections that tell the story of Picasso’s life and his impact on the world of art.

Anantara Villa Padierna can arrange a private guided tour of Malaga, Picasso’s birthplace. One is whisked to the regional capital in style, where a guide is awaiting us. Each tour can be personalised. Of course, it includes a visit to the Picasso Museum which is home to more than 230 of his works.

The museum’s permanent collection is arranged chronologically, showing the overlap of his personal life and relationships with his radical artistic innovation through his abstract works.

With a guide, his story and works really resonate, and inspire you to delve back into history to find out more.

Until the end of March 2024, the museum’s temporary exhibition, ‘The Echo of Picasso’ brings together contemporary works by artists inspired by Picasso, highlighting how his cultural impact continues to reverberate for generations. The works are in different groups, each with a Picasso original as the inspiration – a really cool exhibit.

We also returned to Picasso’s birthplace on Plaza de la Merced – here the Picasso Foundation at the Casa Natal de Picasso offers a more intimate perspective with insights regarding his early years in Malaga.

Amongst the sketches on show are 9 of the lithographs of ‘The Bull’, Picasso’s 1945 work which is a simple, easily grasped guide to abstraction.

The tour also includes a visit to Malaga’s magnificent Cathedral, as well as the charming church where Picasso was baptised.

Then the amazing Magala trip ends with a typical Malaga tapas dinner at the city’s most iconic tavern, Pimpi Restaurant. Here the young Picasso famously sketched Malaga’s ubiquitous pigeons and the bar restaurant is one of the most evocative locations in the old town.

In the heart of Speyside, where the River Isla gently flows, a hidden gem awaits whisky enthusiasts, adventure-seekers, and those in search of a tranquil Scottish escape. This November marks the grand opening of Linn House, a Victorian manor set to become the new hub for Scottish whisky. Managed by Chivas Brothers, the visionary force behind globally cherished whiskies like The Glenlivet, Royal Salute, Ballantine’s, and Chivas Regal, Linn House promises a truly unique luxury experience for guests seeking the perfect minibreak with family and friends. Ross from The Luxury Editor was one of the first people to stay – read on to discover more.

An Exclusive Retreat

Tucked within the picturesque landscapes of Speyside with a view of the River Isla, Linn House stands proudly as the inaugural guest house and whisky retreat of Chivas Brothers, with roots dating back to 1870. Immerse yourself in fine dining, opulent interiors, and the Victorian charm that pervades, creating an ambience of serenity and luxury. Wander the grounds, breathe the fresh Scottish air, and unwind.

Originally designed in the 1870s by the esteemed Scottish gentleman Robert Kynoch-Shand, Linn House was a vision of a remarkable Victorian mansion in the heart of Keith. Recognising its grandeur in 1993, The Chivas and Glenlivet Group undertook a meticulous renovation to restore Linn House to its former glory. The result is a sumptuous haven that now stands as a premier destination, inviting guests to become part of a new chapter in its rich history.

Linn House cherishes conviviality and Tony Guerreiro and the rest of the team don’t think of guests as customers – rather as family. From the minute you arrive you will experience a warm Scottish welcome next to the roaring log fire, so make yourself at home for the weekend.

The Heart of Speyside

Speyside stands as a beacon for whisky enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Renowned globally as the beating heart of Scotch whisky production, the area is a region of Scotland where the art of distillation intertwines seamlessly with the natural beauty of the surroundings. Home to a concentration of renowned distilleries, Speyside is a pilgrimage site for those seeking to explore the nuanced flavours and craftsmanship of single and blended malt whiskies and Linn House couldn’t be better located.

Found in the small town of Keith it is around 20 minutes to Dufftown and Aberdeen is a one-hour car journey, Aberdeen International Airport offers connections across Europe. It’s also around 2.5 hours by train to Edinburgh.

A Whisky Lover’s Paradise

One of the highlights of the renovation has to be the new Whisky Library. Boasting a carefully curated whisky collection covering three of the four walls of the library and featuring selections from The Glenlivet, Aberlour, Scapa, Chivas Regal, Royale Salute, and Ballantine’s, you can engage in guided tastings to explore these iconic whiskies some of which are over 30 years old.

You can tailor and customise your whisky experience and even elevate it to new heights by choosing one of their Whisky Library packages.

  1. Bronze: Exploration – Whiskies up to 14 years old
  2. Silver: Discovery – Whiskies up to 18 years old
  3. Gold: Specialist Rare – Single cask whiskies aged 25 years and above
  4. Platinum: Mastery Rare – Very limited-release single casks, aged 30 years and above

Attention to detail is paramount at Linn House and the entire experience can be tailored to a guest’s needs. On the launch night that we were there, we were in the very capable hands of Ethan Miln Global Brand Ambassador Chivas Brothers who mixed the most incredible cocktails throughout the evening.

Culinary Delights

As evening falls immerse yourself in the enchanting ambience of Linn House’s oak-panelled mahogany dining room. Savour fine dining experiences crafted by the house’s accomplished head chef, Eric, whose expertise has been refined in renowned Michelin and AA Rosette hotels.

Linn Houses’s commitment to excellence is unwavering. In pursuit of this, they have meticulously selected only the finest, freshest local and seasonal produce, ensuring that each delectable bite encapsulates the essence of craftsmanship and quality. Menu’s are guided by nature so as the seasons evolve, so do their menus, echoing the abundance of locally sourced ingredients within the local area. From succulent Moray scallops to flavourful venison and the timeless classic haggis, our dishes proudly showcase the diverse and rich flavours of Scotland.

Dinner

During our stay, we were treated to a delightful four-course meal with matching Royal Salute whiskies.

No dinner in Scotland would be the same without haggis and at Linn House you can expect your Haggis to be addressed with the famous Robert Burn’s poem “Address To A Haggis”.

Following dinner, a leg stretch is in order so we head to the garden fire pit for a nightcap dram – the ideal way to end an evening at Linn House.

Breakfast

Cooked to order and served in the dining room.

A Testimony to Heritage

Linn House boasts thirteen magnificent bedrooms across two floors, each named after one of their distilleries. Every room is uniquely designed, with some providing picturesque views of the River Isla and its scenic surroundings, while first-floor rooms offer enhanced floor space and features like free-standing baths and separate showers. All rooms feature fine Scottish textiles and linens, and opulent bathrooms, with underfloor heating and exclusive Scottish toiletries, while some room’s beds can be swapped from king to twin depending on guests’ needs.

My room during my stay was on the second floor in the Glen Keith room, named after the Glen Keith distillery which was founded in 1957 and also lies in the town of Keith – a close walk to Linn House. Resplendent in traditional Scottish hues the room has views looking out over the garden, as well as including a small lounge area and desk.

A lovely surprise of a bottle of Linn House Reserve whisky is placed in each guest’s room at Linn House – this is definitely one to tuck away in your whisky collection.

As you meander through terraced sculpture gardens, vertiginous panoramas unfurl before you, leading the way to a castle-hotel where nothing can rival the ethereal landscape. Once an enclave for artists seeking inspiration, this captivating retreat has undergone a graceful transformation, its essence now delicately divided between the timeless stone castle and the charming village buildings. As one follows cobblestone paths, a magical world unfolds, where each room is a unique masterpiece, most adorned with vistas that conjure the limitless sea. Claiming dominion over one of the most breathtaking vistas the Riviera has to offer, this stone chateau delicately perched upon the precipice, caught between the boundless sky and the cerulean sea below.

Inside the ancient walls, stone weaves stories across floors, walls, and ceilings, a silent narrator of history.

Set The Scene

In the year 1953, a visionary named Robert Wolf fell under the spell of Château de La Chèvre d’Or, and with an artist’s heart, he transformed it into a realm of gastronomic delight. Local legends whisper that the great Walt Disney himself implored Wolf to acquire a collection of village houses, weaving them into a tapestry of hotel rooms, a touch of enchantment that later inspired Disney’s Magic Kingdom. Today, this venerable establishment stands as a symbol of Relais & Châteaux, gracing the world with 43 meticulously curated rooms and suites, including the coveted celebrity Panorama suite.

Check-In

Stepping onto the steeply terraced property is like ascending to a realm where myths and reality intertwine. We are greeted by statues of mythical beasts and timeless figures guarding this celestial haven, which has welcomed luminaries like President Obama and U2’s iconic Bono. The heart of this enchanted castle is its staff, under the stewardship of the remarkable General Manager, Thierry Naidu. His warm spirit and effervescent charm create an atmosphere where every guest feels not like a visitor, but like an old friend.

The Rooms

Each room, a sanctuary of opulence, tells a story of unparalleled luxury. Provençal charm marries contemporary elegance, with stone fireplaces and regal furnishings contributing to the castle’s timeless ambience. We love the marble-clad bathrooms, imbued with the fragrant potions of Fragonard, which boast whirlpool baths that offer a glimpse of heaven. The Presidential Suite, where a sun-kissed sundeck cradles a heated infinity pool and a whispering whirlpool that shares secrets with the sea is spectacular to say the least. For an awe-inspiring view that seems to flirt with the edge of the sea, the ultimate choice lies within the deluxe rooms and suites. Nestled within this charming haven, all rooms are unique, ensconced in the cosy stone maisons de village clustered around the castle. The more modest rooms offer peeks into the medieval village or the serene terraced gardens.

As you step inside, the décor reveals a spectrum of styles, from the understated Provençal elegance to a hushed contemporary allure. Stone fireplaces and parquet floors coexist harmoniously with ancient doors, graced by the gentle presence of pale orchids, period cabinets, and designer armchairs. It’s a blend of tradition and modernity that enriches the senses and captivates the soul.

Amenities and Facilities

La Chèvre d’Or is more than a hotel; it’s a realm of relaxation and rejuvenation. Lazy afternoons are spent by the pools, and for me, the cliffside perched infinity pool was a favourite. Wandering the village’s winding cobblestone streets, art and antique-filled shops come alive, while the local Fragonard perfume factory casts an enchanting spell.

While La Chèvre d’Or may not boast a conventional spa, it offers a myriad of alternatives to embrace serenity. Multiple pools, each with its own unique charm, beckon, as does a tempting whirlpool tub that comes with a view that feels like a piece of heaven. For those seeking relaxation of a different kind, massages and beauty treatments are readily available, offering a rejuvenating escape. Yoga classes are on offer, soothing both body and mind, should you desire a peaceful interlude. One could lose themselves in the embrace of the most picturesque pool while casting their gaze upon the coastal panorama and the gardens that cocoon the soul. It’s a place that might inspire grand commitments, for La Chèvre d’Or is the French Riviera’s most coveted destination for weddings, where dreams are woven into reality with every gentle breeze.

Dining

The heart of this haven lies in its restaurants, each an ode to epicurean delights. La Chèvre d’Or, a mystical two Michelin-starred dining sanctuary. Under the artistry of Head Chef Arnaud Faye, Southern classics are reborn in spectacular form, showcasing pristine ingredients such as pistou, rabbit, John Dory, and the exquisite truffle. The presentation of these dishes is an art in itself, a visual delight rivalling their delectable flavours.

The breakfast buffet caters to the diverse palates of Monaco, featuring waffles, pancakes, and muffins, alongside delightful touches like baby mozzarella balls and panettone for those with Italian inclinations. For those with a sweet tooth, the pastry chef’s pistachio and Madeira cakes are a temptation for even the most discerning of indulgences.

Final Thoughts

The service here transcends the ordinary; it’s an art form. Every staff member, led by the inimitable Thierry Naidu, ensures that your stay is a masterpiece of tranquillity and wonder. From making sure that the staff remembers your favourite coffee to leaving special treats and surprises in your room, service is warm, refined, and faultless. As I departed, my gaze lingered on the legendary Nietzsche path, winding its way from town to the pinnacle, 1,400 feet above sea level, vanishing from sight. The stone village, untouched by the relentless march of time, seemed like a scene from a fairytale. La Chèvre d’Or is a timeless treasure that will forever be etched in my heart, a place where dreams are not just dreams but tangible, beautiful reality.

The Luxury Editor’s Chrystal, ventured back to her roots and recently enjoyed a stay at Rockliffe Hall in north-east England. The award-winning hotel boasts a 3AA Rosette fine-dining restaurant, spacious spa and championship golf-course. Read on for the full review.

Background

Set in the neighbouring village to the one where I spent many a summer holiday playing by the river is the five-star hotel, golf and spa resort Rockliffe Hall. The 375 acres of land and stately house was once the private home of the Backhouse family (famous for co-founding Barclays Bank) and dates back to 1863. This beautiful resort tucked away in the Tees Valley, is a splendid retreat; ideal for friends to meet, couples to reconnect and families to gather. We were recently invited to stay, read our review to discover more.

Rockliffe Hall is a POB hotel – a collection of the very best independent hotels across the British Isles.

Arrival

I first visited Rockliffe about 13 years ago, not long after it first opened, and I remember the vast open fields surrounding the driveway. Fast forward to the present day and the mature woodland that envelopes the wide and winding driveway looks like it has been there forever. It’s a distinguished entrance that is befitting of this five-star estate.

We arrived on a damp Friday afternoon, but our spirits were soon brightened by the seasonal Halloween decorations at the door and in the reception hall.

Pleasant and professional receptionists welcomed us as we completed the quick and easy check-in process. We were then escorted to our room (ground floor superior suite) where our cases awaited our arrival.

Our Suite

Our suite was in the New Hall, which is an extension of the original building and benefits from a south-facing aspect, meaning each room (or suite) presents guests with beautiful views across the extensive landscaped gardens and the championship golf course. Guests staying in a superior suite will also enjoy a Juliet balcony or ground floor patio. We were staying in a ground-floor superior so the ground to floor doors brings ‘the outdoors in’ and really accentuated the already extremely spacious suite.

The New Hall rooms were recently refurbished in partnership with leading local interior designers, Cocoon & Bauer. The result is a calming and classic aesthetic with pops of colour accentuating the neutral pallet.

The super king-sized bed was sumptuous, with luxurious bedding made the ‘sleep’ area a cosy haven whilst the plush sofa and perfectly positioned coffee tables in the lounge area created a relaxing space. The well-designed separate dressing room area offered privacy and separation so the rest of the suite allowing guests to do their own thing without encroaching on one another.

The mood lighting with bedside controls was a smart feature and I always love a room with a ‘global off’ to turn all lights off as you walk out the door.

The neutral-toned marble-clad bathroom comprised walk-in monsoon style shower and separate bath with a built-in TV’s so guests can really kick back and relax, the usual fluffy bathrobes and towels adorned the heated towel rail, and his and her sinks with Molten Brown toiletries completed the ensuite. A separate WC offered great convenience.

A bonus of staying in the New Hall is that all rooms are only a short fluffy robe-clad walk to the spa and gym facilities.

Other Accommodations

Old Hall rooms and suites, each of which is individual in design with traditional furnishings reflective of the classic and elegant era of the original building. Contemporary double rooms can be found in Tiplady Lodge which is a very short walk from the main hotel and rooms within overlook the golf course. For those wishing to enjoy the facilities of the hotel but with more independence there are self-catering apartments and a house – ideal for larger groups.

Dining

Dining here can be as formal or as relaxed as you wish.

The Orangery is the fine dining restaurant within the hotel, however if you’d prefer something more informal then opt for The Clubhouse which overlooks the golf-course and is open all day, every day. Nu Sana is above the Spa and serves healthy and fulfilling dishes, guests can even dine in their robes (until 5pm) and if the weather is favourable the terrace is a great spot to enjoy the tasty dishes served here.

We dined in The Orangery, which is part of the original building and quite a formal affair. We enjoyed a cocktail in the bar whilst we perused the a la carte menu, and our order was taken before we were escorted into the large high-ceiling restaurant overlooking the well-lit landscape gardens. The menu changes regularly and uses seasonal produce much of which is home-grown. The fine-dining dishes crafted by Head Chef, Paul Nicholson, were delicious and quality over quantity is the focus.

Appetizer: Beef And 36-Month Aged Parmesan Cappuccino, Onion Bread.

Starter 1:  Pan Seared Foie Gras, Gingerbread, Pecan, Granny Smith, Brioche.

Starter 2: Orkney Scallop, Celeriac, Smoked Roe, Pine.

Main 1: Salt Aged Highland Venison, Oxtail, Chervil Root, Malt, Elderflower.

Main 2: Joshu A5 Wagu Sirloin, Jerusalem Artichoke, Black Garlic, Hen of the Woods, Truffle Hash Brown, Caper, Bone Marrow Bordelaise.

Dessert 1: Valrhona Chocolate, Caramel, Milk, Yuzu

Dessert 2: Pressed Caramelised Granny Smith Apple, Sable Breton, Calvados Mascarpone, Peanut.

Breakfast was also served in The Orangery, guests are asked to make a prior reservation and are welcomed by the Maître D. Guests can choose a starter and a main, with toast and coffee to compliment the meal. With my sweet tooth, I opted for two starters (Bircher Muesli and Homemade Pancakes) both of which were absolutely delicious – I could have eaten at least three more! Saying that I quite like this ‘order’ concept as I do have a tendency to overindulge at breakfast buffets. This approach is also a good way to good own on food waste which works towards sustainability efforts.

Facilities

The Spa

The Spa is open to hotel guests, members and non-resident day visitors. It’s extremely spacious at 50,000 sqft and the floor to ceiling windows that overlook the golf course enhanced the space.

The magnificent stain glass in the spa entrance and around the pool side were in fact the original windows from the chapel that was part of the original building. These touches of history help maintain the heritage throughout the newer part of the hotel.

With a 20m swimming pool, poolside loungers, hydro pool, multiple saunas, tropic atrium, caldarium, igloo, trepidation, monsoon shower, outdoor hot tub there is plenty of variety to ensure guests feel 100% relaxed. My favourite spa room was the igloo – there is nothing like rubbing ice all over your body for the ultimate invigoration!!

Fruit, water, and a seasonal herbal tea are all complimentary. Smoothies are also available to order at an additional charge.

The Spa Garden with a private infinity hydro pool, is popular with guests and use of this tranquil amenity can be arranged at an additional charge. We didn’t spend any time in here on our visit, but I’ve heard good things. Find out more

Spa and Wellness Treatments

There are several private, quiet, cosy and ambient treatment rooms for guests to enjoy a holistic wellness message or facial, and positioning themselves as innovators in the industry, Rockliffe Hall has just launched its FACE SPAce treatments in the Spa boutique. We were invited to be one of the first to try this treatment – before it launched to the general public – and despite my reservations I was very impressed with the results-driven facial. Read the full review here.

Activities

A gym can be accessed in the spa building, it boasts a great range of modern cardio and resistance machines with a free-weight area. I had a quick workout but didn’t spend as much time as I would have liked (breakfast was calling!) as it was a pretty smart gym. Guests can join group exercise classes and PT sessions can also be arranged.

There is a full-size tennis court, bikes for hire, beautiful riverside walks, a driving range and of course not forgetting the parkland 18-hole golf course.

As you pass through the hotel you may notice random but artistic letter plaques hidden in obscure places – they are not as random as they may look. They are part of the Alphabet Hunt, and the Alphabet Tree, is found in the Spa reception. This is a great activity to keep children (and adults alike!) entertained but also another nod to the history of the estate. The Backhouse family (original owners) had a passion for plants and brought many plants and trees from around the world (one for each letter of the alphabet) and planted them in the grounds – many of which remain today.

The Drawing Room and Library found in the Old Hall are beautifully elegant spots to sit back and enjoy a moment or two of peace – and be transported back to days gone by.

Getting There

For UK guests, Rockliffe is easily accessible by road or rail – just a 10-minute drive from Darlington Railway station or for guests who prefer to use their own private transport there is a helipad.

Final Thoughts

We had a thoroughly lovely stay here. It combines modern facilities with elegant charm and perfectly caters for all sorts of celebratory occasions.

A new era of opulence has blossomed along the eastern bank of Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River. With an air of sophistication yet a carefree charm, Capella Bangkok seamlessly blends modernity with timelessness. Around 210,000 years ago, Capella, which means “bright northern star” in Latin, was the brightest celestial body in the night sky. While it’s no longer the brightest, Capella still stands out as the sixth brightest star, with its distinct yellow hue, residing in the Auriga constellation. On the banks of Thailand’s Chao Phraya River, a prominent star of a different kind, the Capella Bangkok, shines brightly.

Capella Hotel and Resorts, the boutique luxury hotel chain based in Singapore, presents the stylish Capella Bangkok as the sixth gem in its constellation. Designed by renowned architects Andy Miller and Richard Scott-Wilson of Hamiltons International, the hotel comprises three key elements: a hotel block, a ground and first floor with courtyards, and a lower ground floor with river-facing gardens.

An Urban Riverside Resort

Entering the building, guests are met with a stylish and breathtaking lounge area which also doubles as the Tea Lounge, featuring a marble floor, sparkling ceiling lights, intricate Thai-inspired screens, and Asian antiques. This elegant area of relaxation serves as a transition area leading to the Living Room, accessible to guests only with an electronic key card.

The Living Room

In the Living Room, all guest check-in formalities are handled with sophistication and a personal touch, offering guests a cool drink, tea, or champagne. A warm and hospitable Capella Culturist then introduces guests to their light-filled, elegant room with floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views of the Chao Phraya River, marking the start of an extraordinary experience.

On the Banks of the Chao Phraya River

The waterway is the star of the show at the Capella Bangkok and the architects have made every effort to embrace the prime location with floor-to-ceiling windows throughout. The resort is located within the Chao Phraya Estate, with the Four Seasons Residences as its equally well-to-do neighbour. Lie back and watch the world go by from a range of comfortable spots, from the terrace – complete with an outdoor saltwater pool and four-poster loungers, through to the spa and outdoor restaurant.

A house car and a private pier enable guests to travel with luxurious ease, both on land and water. Taxis take around one hour to the airport depending on traffic and can be organised in a flash by the hotel concierge.

If you want door-to-door service for arrival and departure the limousine and VIP fast-track services at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, ensure seamless navigation through airport procedures for both arrival and departure. which can be coordinated 24 hours in advance.

All River View Guest Quarters

The hotel accommodates 101 rooms, 16 of which are suites and seven are villas with private balconies or a verandah with a jacuzzi plunge pool. Each has a Bluetooth speaker, a Nespresso coffee machine, a minibar, free snacks and Etoile de Siam bath products by Bottega. Whichever room guests choose they’ll get a fantastic outlook as they all face the river, but for the finest, book the Presidential Villa. This comes complete with two bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, a garden and a jacuzzi plunge pool, perched at the river’s edge.

Riverside Premier Suite

During our stay, we resided in one of the Riverside Premier Rooms. Elevated on the upper floors, the Riverfront Premier is a residentially designed retreat boasting a private balcony and sweeping panoramic views of the river. Situated between the fifth and tenth floors, it offers an elegant and homely atmosphere, adorned with custom art and a spacious marble bathroom. You can choose between a king-size or twin beds for the utmost comfort. The inviting balcony is furnished with a comfortable divan, where you can savour the bustling river scene at dawn with a rich ristretto or in the evening with your favourite sparkling beverage, creating memorable moments by the water’s edge.

Bedroom & Lounge

The entire room can be cleverly controlled via an iPad.

Bathroom

The bathroom has a view that looks out over the veranda, with twin sinks, a central bath, and a separate rain shower.

I love grading a hotel bedroom on its amenities and this bathroom was awash with goodies. The clever set of boxes depicting a historical scene of the Temple of Dawn pulls apart into everything you will need for a stay ranging from mouthwash and shaving kit to a comb, brush, and toothbrushes.

Hallway & Dressing Area

As you enter the room to the right running along the back of the bedroom is a separate hallway which is huge offering plenty of space for hanging two full suitcases. Hotel service also includes pressing of up to 5 garments per day.

Personal Bar

A personal bar with complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic beverages is provided in all guestrooms.

Outside Space & View

Turn Down

The service across the entire hotel is incredible, guests want for nothing, and the team really go above and beyond with the housekeeping, with items hung up and folded and the turn-down service also includes the running of a bath.

Villas

Experience serenity by the river in luxurious villas, including a two-bedroom Presidential Villa. Each villa offers separate living and dining spaces with folding glass doors that open to lush private gardens. You can enjoy an outdoor jacuzzi plunge pool, a riverfront daybed, a spacious sunlit bathroom with an oversized tub, and both indoor and outdoor showers.

Villas: Accessed through a private courtyard entrance, they feature a comfortable layout with a separate living room, dining room, a spacious bedroom with a king-size bed, a large marble bathroom, a powder room, and a jacuzzi plunge pool surrounded by tropical gardens. You can also enjoy a front-row seat to the vibrant river life from a sala for two.

The villa features a separate living and dining room, a spacious master bedroom with a four-poster king-size bed, a second bedroom with two double beds, two large marble bathrooms, a powder room, and a plunge pool surrounded by tropical gardens. Additionally, there’s a sala and elegant outdoor furnishings, making it a perfect venue for a romantic dinner or a BBQ evening by the water’s edge.

Michelin-Starred Riviera Food

The signature restaurant Côte is led by the renowned Argentinian chef Mauro Colagreco, best known for helming the three-Michelin-starred Mirazur, in Nice. Côte has one Michelin star and brings the flavours of the Mediterranean (France and Italy), using organic herbs and veg grown in the onsite greenhouse. Select from the à la carte menu or the nine-course Carte Blanche tasting menu, in which you can truly experience the chef’s prowess.

Phra Nakhon

Few restaurants in Bangkok can compare to the combination of location and cuisine found at Phra Nakhon, Capella’s riverside Thai speciality restaurant. Nestled in a riverbank garden, this restaurant offers breakfast in both indoor and outdoor settings, featuring a diverse range of local and international dishes. However, it’s during lunch and dinner that Phra Nakhon truly shines, delivering a delectable Thai experience. Diners can anticipate an array of authentic dishes inspired by different regions of Thailand, as well as cherished family recipes that utilise locally sourced ingredients for an extensive menu of Thai soups, curries, and noodles.

It was a wet and dreary day outside, yet upon entering the hotel, the roaring fire, vibrant coloured reception area and warm welcome from the staff instantly made the day feel brighter. Seated at the antique-style reception desk, we were kindly offered a glass of fizz whilst we checked in which was a quick, efficient and friendly process. We arrived at the hotel earlier than the advised check-in time in the hope that we’d enjoy a game of tennis (the heavy rain put a stop to that!) so our room wasn’t quite ready. That’s no problem as the lovely receptionist took our bags and showed us around the rest of the hotel, which lived up to expectations in terms of vibe, décor and service.

Public Spaces

This 15-bedroom boutique hotel has been brought to life with a stylish sense of modern aesthetics that contrasts yet complements traditional features.  And this relaxed style can be attributed to the talents of Kim Murray, who was the creative force behind the hotel’s refurbishment.

One of the key features I noticed about Cromlix is the many public rooms in which guests can while away the hours; cosy up by the roaring fire, enjoy traditional board games in the drawing room, get lost in a book in the nook, enjoy a tipple in the bar or (and my personal favourite) pocket a few balls in the Billiard’s Room.

Every space within the historic home has been carefully designed to be useable and enjoyable in their own right, with an eclectic mix of books are thoughtfully placed on coffee tables throughout the hotel; a perfect example is the garden entrance hall which is home to a grand piano, Damien Hirst artwork, and a coffee table book of his works, which calls out to guests to ‘take a seat and take some time!’  And no matter where you settle in the hotel the soothing sound of the background music (which is from a playlist specifically created for Cromlix further sets the scene for guests to slow down and relax in their opulent surroundings.

Bedrooms

Each of the 15 rooms are named after one of the plants or herbs grown on the 34-acre estate. Our home for the evening was Sorrel which was an exceptionally spacious room overlooking the driveway’s turning circle and out towards the beautiful countryside.

Our room presented a traditional design with a simple and elegant colour palette. Big windows let in the light whilst the heavy curtains add warmth and privacy, an ornate oak freestanding dressing table, super king-size sumptuous bed adorned with heavy blankets, freestanding double wardrobe (with ample clothes hangers, hairdryer, iron, and laundry bag) two bright bucket chairs and a wall mounted smart TV completed the bedroom furnishings.

The in-room coffee and tea station offered a great selection of herbal tea and Nespresso coffee pods to enjoy with a freshly baked slice of ‘Granny Erskine’ (Andy’s grandmother) shortbread – made using her original secret recipe.

Complimentary milk and water were available in the fridge and a selection of drinks and snacks from the pay-as-you-go mini bar.

Across a small landing (still within our room) the door opened to reveal a traditional-style bathroom with a lovely green, grey, and black colour scheme, which I really loved. The bath was large and the rain shower was powerful. MODM are the toiletries of choice, a natural ingredients wellness brand created by Edinburgh-based brother and sister team and they smelt absolutely divine.

Fluffy towels, robes and slippers embroidered with the Cromlix crest were nicely heated on the radiator.

A turndown service saw our room brought back to order with some naughty, but very nice Cranachan truffles thoughtfully placed on our pillows.

Sorrel was a delightful room to call our own for the next 24 hours.

Food and Drink

Before arriving at Cromlix, I’d given quite a bit of thought as to how the hotel would look and its ambience (delighted to say it lived up to expectations!) however, I’d not given the dining aspect much thought.

We enjoyed a pre-dinner drink in the bar which has a lively atmosphere and overlooks the garden. A good selection of wines, beers, lagers, spirits and cocktails are on the menu, and I enjoyed a ‘Dark Stormy Night in Scotland’ which was prepared and presented with great attention to detail.

The restaurant is named The Glasshouse at Cromlix, aptly named after its structure and design boasting panoramic views across the gardens and estate. Led by Executive Head Chef Darin Campbell the menu is seasonal with many of the ingredients grown in the Cromlix kitchen garden. The open kitchen adds to the hustle and bustle of the restaurant’s energy.

The choices for starters and main courses were very much to our liking and it took us a while to make a final decision.  Whilst we pondered the menu our waitress brought us a couple of very tasty canapes – we hoped the rest of the meal would meet such standards.

Starter 1:  Crispy Gressingham Duck Pastilla with Baba Ghanoush and Medjool Dates

Starter 2: Pork and Pistachio Pate with Brioche, Golden Raisins, and Roasted Spiced Cauliflower

Main 1: West Coast Scottish Cod with Hand Dived Scallop, Aubergine Caponata, Sauce Bourride with a side of Seasonal Vegetables.

Main 2: Fillet Steak, aged for at least 28 days, Seasonal Vegetables, Salad, Peppercorn Sauce and hand-cut Chips.

Dessert 1: Valrhona Chocolate & Hazelnut Delice with Honey Ice-cream, Honeycomb and Cherry

Dessert 2: Home-made Almond Croissant, Roasted Stone Fruit and Crème Brule Ice-Cream

Each dish was absolutely delicious; the quality of the ingredients shone through, the combination of the flavours and textures were a delight on the pallet and the presentation was beautiful without being over-fussy. The portion sizes were plentiful too.

We were extremely impressed, and it is clear to see why the restaurant is so busy, not just with hotel guests but it is also a popular choice with people travelling just for the dining experience alone. The food was superb.

There is also a private dining room which is a wonderful spot to celebrate a special occasion, with the fine food from the Glasshouse Restaurant.

Breakfast was a fine affair too. A selection of fruits, cereal, homemade granola, yoghurts, and cheeses were on offer from the cold buffet. I could have stuffed myself with the poached pears, spiced apricots and granola but I tried to control myself as the hot dishes were equally as tempting with the Crème Brulé Porridge (whisky cream and demerara sugar) stealing the show. As if that wasn’t enough a basket of toast and pastries were also served. A true breakfast of champions!

The Kitchen Garden is located close to the main house of the hotel and guests can peek over the fence at the array of vegetables, herbs and spices growing or arrange a tour for more detailed insight. The hens wander freely and the bees buzz around their hives creating a wholesome feel to the grounds.

Facilities

As to be expected there is a tennis court, with a practice wall, where guests can perfect their game and professional coaching sessions can also be arranged. There is also a new Pickleball court for a spot of fun paddle sports action.

Other activities include fishing on the estate loch, archery, falconry display walks, in-room spa treatments, walks around the estate (picnics can also be arranged), foraging, outdoor garden games, board games and a full-size billiard table.

During our stay we donned a pair of complimentary Barbour wellies and explored the estate, sadly it was a bit too wet for tennis, so we opted for a game of snooker instead in The Billiard Room. In keeping with the rest of the contemporary meets tradition décor that flows through the hotel, this room pops with colour and pattern whilst traditional Scottish furniture and artefacts adorn the walls (think stags heads, antique dresser and large windows showcasing stunning views of the Scottish countryside) and act as a reminder of the heritage of this country estate. We also liked the – jars of complimentary retro sweets. Nice touch!

The original Chapel still stands and is the only part of the building that fully withstood the effects of the fire that destroyed much of the original house in 1878. This chapel is frequently used for wedding services and celebrations by guests of the hotel.

Final Thoughts

We thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay at Cromlix. It’s a place to completely relax and enjoy a slow pace in a picture-perfect romantic setting.

Found in a small hamlet on the protected natural south east coast of Mallorca is the 5-star El Coto Boutique Hotel & Spa. Family-owned and run for the past 3 decades, this refined and intimate property has become a perennial favourite amongst guests and visitors who not only feel embraced by the warm, personalised welcome, but by the tranquillity of the village, between the salt flats and the sea.
Food and wine at El Coto is renowned, with the hotel boasting the largest private collection of Mallorca wines in Spain, and gourmet menus that change each day. Yet the latest draw to this little gem of a hotel is their stunning new spa and wellness centre, Silentia.

It’s such a pleasure, after all these years exploring and getting to know Mallorca, that I can still discover some gems, and sparkling destinations that surprise and impress.  El Coto Boutique Hotel & Spa is one such jewel. I was recently invited to the inauguration of the property’s new Silentia Spa, and over the short visit, I really fell for the place.

This is a special hotel, and understandably so, as it has been created with love and care by Miriam and Pepe Navarrete who over the past 30 years have continually enhanced and improved El Coto to its present 5-star status while still maintaining the personal, family style that is so loved by guests that return year after year.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by their sons, Patric and Cristian who as the next generation are continuing the tradition of personalised hospitality.

Mediterranean Hideaway

El Coto is a charming Mediterranean hideaway, with a classic Riviera vibe and a timeless elegance. It is found in the sleepy hamlet of Colonia de Sant Jordi, a little off the tourist trail, yet popular with islanders for their summer holidays and weekend escapades. Those in the known come back year after year to enjoy the clear waters of the bays and coves and the unspoilt coastline and pine forests.

Rooms look out to the Salines de S’Avall salt lakes and flats, partial sea views and the garden pool. The roof terrace, a favourite for sunbathing or sundowner cocktails, offers striking views of the local area and the emblematic beach, Es Trenc.

To the east and west the coastline and countryside is protected, providing a haven for wildlife and a wonderful area to explore. This is the Mallorca of a bygone age, where you feel connected to the destination and the environment.

Wellbeing

With this peaceful, natural, and calming environment, it makes perfect sense to come here for a wellness retreat or pampering spa holiday. The sparkling Silentia spa, opened in autumn 2023, marks a new era for El Coto, redefining this gourmet hideaway into a wellness destination with innovative treatments and exceptional facilities.

Constructed with a strong emphasis on sustainability, Silentia is a dreamy well-being centre. These top-notch purpose-built facilities include an indoor pool, hydrotherapy circuit, a gym, and treatment rooms that open to private gardens. There is also an authentic hammam with various classic and contemporary treatments.

Amongst the spacious treatment rooms is a double treatment space that includes a private sauna, hydro-massage spa bath, and private garden.

This is probably the best-equipped doubles treatment room I have seen, a perfect retreat for couples therapies like the ‘Isla de Los Dioses’ ritual. This bespoke well-being journey includes a sauna, silk & gold skin exfoliation, a herbal spa bath, massage and facial followed by a healthy lunch.

The spa treatment menu is extensive, created and curated by Silentia Spa Director Antoniya Stoycheva Atanasova.

I chose the Himalayan salt treatment, a first for me. This therapy includes a calming, healing massage with warm, solid salt spheres and paddles. It’s super relaxing, with the salt and oil leaving your skin radiant. It feels appropriate to choose a treatment with salt, as the Salines de S’Avall salt pans are nearby, said to be amongst the oldest in the world, dating back to Roman times.

Guests of El Coto Boutique Hotel have preferential access to the Silentia spa, including complimentary access to the pool and hydrotherapy circuit. If you are visiting Mallorca, you can also enjoy the facilities of El Coto Hotel with a Day Pass, giving you the opportunity to enjoy the gardens, pool, spa, and gastronomy.

Gastronomy

Each element of a stay at El Coto Boutique Hotel & Spa is refined, curated and thoughtful.  This is more than evident with the culinary experience at the property.

The hotel’s wine cellar is a delight to visit, for a private wine tasting or tour, taking in the extraordinary collection of Spanish wines, Mallorca wines and fine French Champagnes.

Restaurant Bistro is the relaxed eatery on the sun-drenched terrace overlooking the salt pans, perfect for a refreshing spritz and local seafood or maybe an open brioche sandwich, citrus and spice marinated salmon, avocado cream, and cucumber.

Restaurant Salma, with tables set around the pool, makes each evening feel like an occasion. Dinner is a 5-course, gourmet adventure. Guests can choose from a selection of culinary dishes for each course, as well as seasonal creations from the daily suggestions, such as ‘Soller’ red prawn carpaccio with sturgeon caviar, or sea bass in salt crust or a vegetarian roasted cauliflower marinated in curry and coconut milk with toasted nuts and roasted peppers.

Service is polished natural and friendly, led by Cristian Navarrete. The ambiance is elegant and relaxed with regular evenings of live music.

Accommodation

Choose from 50 rooms and suites, decorated in a classic style with some bold details, pops of colour and pieces of art. There are all the 5-star amenities you would expect, from a mini bar to bathroom amenities as well as an excellent Illy coffee machine and tea-making facilities.

El Coto Boutique Hotel & Spa has peaceful grounds of palms, cactus, and flowering shrubs. A charming, secluded garden, shaded by Mediterranean pines is the perfect place to relax and disconnect.

El Coto is an impressive boutique, with beautiful attention to detail and now a spectacular spa. Yet it was the warmth of welcome that really made an impact on me. The whole team feel like a family, which I guess is understandable, as many have worked here for years, and some decades.

In short, El Coto offers that rare and invaluable quality, genuine hospitality.

METT has brought its signature hospitality to Southern Spain, with the opening of its beachside boutique hotel between Marbella and Estepona. With its spectacular 50 metre Azure Beach Pool, MOI spa, trendy beach chiringuito restaurant, signature Italian dining and soon a Greek restaurant, METT Hotel and Beach Resort Estepona-Marbella is all about socialising, fantastic dining and relishing the modern Mediterranean lifestyle.
Set right on the one of the coast’s broad beaches, this new boutique resort of 249 rooms and suites offers guests, visitors, and locals the chance to be immersed in METT’s unique dining experiences that fuse gastronomy with feel-good music and entertainment.

METT Hotel and Beach Resort Estepona-Marbella brings a new flavour of holiday experience to Andalucia’s Costa del Sol. Embodied by the resort’s tagline of Social Living, guests are promised a destination where they can not only recharge and unwind in the sun, but also celebrate life and have fun, enjoying dining, entertainment, a spa and a METT’s ‘tranquil service style’.

As soon as you arrive, you are embraced by the property’s seductively summery feel, with a beautiful interior and exterior design that captures the allure of the Mediterranean. Lots of natural materials, lush plants, and a harmonious blend of brilliant white, with sea blues and earthy greens together create the perfect setting for a beachside break.

The check-in is professional but relaxed. Sitting in the huge atrium, you are greeted with a welcome cocktail menu, and it’s from this moment your holiday begins.

Gastronomy

METT dining is open to all, and part of the buzz is the mix of local residents, visitors and guests at the restaurants and beach club. Giannis Toman is the Executive Chef at METT Hotel and Beach Resort Estepona-Marbella. With his wealth of experience and creativity in French, Spanish, Greek, Italian and fusion cuisine, Chef Toman is the ideal talent to launch the signature dining experiences of METT.

Isola Ristorante Italiano

2023 has seen the opening of Isola, the brand’s signature Ristorante Italiano, originally founded in Dubai’s Jumeirah Islands Clubhouse. Isola Restaurant Estepona is a celebration of Mediterranean cuisine, taking principal inspiration from the south of Italy. This destination restaurant experience is about truly homemade dishes with a contemporary menu of pasta and pizza as well as other Italian favourites, accompanied by an impressive wine list from Italy and Spain.

Our experience at Isola was impressive. The dishes are expertly executed, and the ingredients are clearly top quality.  We began with a classic carpaccio, dressed in parmesan and rocket – superb. The burrata was generous and creamy, deliciously simple, allowing the quality of the flavoursome ingredients to shine. The calamari is always a favourite of mine and here it has a depth of flavour with excellent seasoning.

There is also a menu of light and delicious pinsa pizzas, that are bursting with texture and flavour, yet without the heavy feeling of some doughy pizzas. The steak was one of the best I have had on the coast in a long time.  Finally, the Tiramisu did not disappoint with a lightness that is matched by a creamy richness.

Cocktails were creative and beautifully presented, while the wine list included the option to enjoy different wines by the glass.

Isola has raised the bar for hotel dining and is worthy of its status as a restaurant that visitors will travel to.

Azure Beach Pool & Restaurant

The 50-metre Azure Beach Pool is at the heart of METT Hotel and Beach Resort Estepona-Marbella. Resident and guest DJs set the tone throughout the day, as the attentive team offer a menu of refreshing juices, cocktails, and light bites from the Azure Beach menu.

There are cabana day beds, as well as double sunbeds, and sun loungers on the beach. What’s more, you can book one of the beach lounges, overlooking the sands, with private hot tub, day beds and table service for food and drinks.

From the pool, you can catch glimpses of the beach and sea beyond, connecting you to the beauty of the destination. As the sun sets, the pool sparkles with underwater lights and cocktails are served at El Bar de Lola.

The Chiringuito restaurant is right on the beach, beautifully styled with banana palms and wooden furniture. Expect a diverse choice of dishes including sushi platers, pizza, yakitori skewers, healthy salads like red quinoa, and bowls including salmon teriyaki. The wine list is great and includes local wines like the delicious Cloe from Ronda.

Accommodation

METT has a wonderfully minimalist take on the Mediterranean style, with bright and airy rooms, decorated with natural elements. Each room and suite is thoughtfully equipped with a steamer for clothes, an excellent mini-bar with premium drinks, tea and coffee-making facilities including an espresso machine and, in the bathroom, expect the signature METT amenities tailored for you. The bathroom amenities are by Botanyc – fabulously aromatic, with scents of Bergamot, Lychee and jasmine.

There are 6 room types and 7 suite types. Guests can choose from a variety of spaces, including suite-up rooms with direct access to a pool, or even two-bedroom suites and suites with large private rooftop terraces. There is an all day room service menu too.

Wellbeing

The MOI Spa is set to open for the 2024 season, offering a luxurious wellbeing space including an indoor pool, hydrotherapy circuit and treatment rooms.

RAISE Fitness is the gym offering with Technogym equipment.

Bicycles are also available, a great way to explore the area, as the boardwalk along the beach runs for kilometres and is a safe and beautiful way to get a feel for the destination. If you’re tempted to explore further, then the Guest Experience team can recommend excursions and day trips.

METT Hotel and Beach Resort Estepona-Marbella is a very welcome addition to the Costa del Sol, bringing a new style of hospitality and some superb gastronomy.
