During our recent stay at Rockliffe Hall, (read our review here) we were kindly invited to try out a new* facial treatment – new not only to Rockliffe Spa but new to the UK too!

The treatment in question is FACE SPAce which Rockliffe Hall, in partnership with award-winning skincare specialist [Comfort Zone], will launch the first FACE SPAce outside of Italy where the concept originated.

The FACE SPAce concept features a selection of ‘active lifting’ facial treatments that have been inspired by physiotherapy practices to work deeper into the facial muscles to release tension and stimulate collagen production. The treatments also use proven facial tools including cryo spoons, gua sha, jade stones, derma-massage rollers and micro sonic and microcurrent devices which promote cellular metabolism. All of which work together to boost micro-circulation and improve elasticity – and the best bit is that these treatments deliver instant results.

Read on to discover my verdict……

My therapist, Rachel F (F for Fabulous!) warmly greeted me and took me along to the Spa Boutique where my FACE SPAce treatment would take place. This took me by surprise as I’d expected to be escorted to a subdued candlelit treatment room, however, Rachel explained that the FACE SPAce concept is designed to be more interactive and present a modern take on traditional style facial treatments.

I made myself comfortable in the specially designed treatment chair which was positioned in front of a full-length mirror making it easy to see and hear Rachel, who talked me through each step in the treatment process.

There is a choice of five different treatments, each of which lasts 55 minutes:

 • Pump-Up: Improves the appearance of wrinkles, increases firmness, and instantly lifts.
 • Calm & Soothe: A restorative facial to reduce visible signs of stressed skin and strengthen the skin barrier.
 • Ultra-Glow: Delivers instant radiance, improving the appearance and texture of skin.
 • Detox & Tone: Brightens, smooths and promotes an even skin tone.
 • Ice Splash: An immediate dose of hydration for plumpness and a dewy complexion.

I opted for the Ultra-Glow treatment which started with a soothing neck massage, the micro sonic sensory device tickled a bit and felt like I was having a shave – Rachel explained that this helps with cell renewal, unclogs the pores, and gives an ultra-deep cleanse. I absolutely loved the gua sha tools which gave a deep and firm massage.

Rachel worked on one side of my face first and then asked me to look in the mirror to compare it to the other ‘untreated’ side and see if I could notice a difference.

Drum roll……

WOW! I could instantly see a marked difference. I couldn’t believe it. My ‘treated’ half looked so smooth and was visibly glowing. Another aspect that surprised me, was how relaxed I felt (something that I struggle to do), I thought that by being seated in a chair in a light room it wouldn’t be very relaxing, but I was proved wrong. And another benefit of this set-up is that you could do it with a friend, when I visited two treatment chairs were positioned next to one another.

I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and I’d recommend it if you want to look your best for a special occasion and Rachel F (F for fabulous!!) really lived up to her name 😉

TLE Tip: The treatments require you to pull down your robe to expose the neckline and shoulders so best to wear a swimsuit under your robe.

Also, it’s recommended to leave at least 20 minutes before getting your face wet and to avoid the extreme heat or cold for at least an hour so if you plan on using Rockliffe Spa facilities do this before your FACE SPAce treatment.

*At the time of writing this FACE SPAce was still in trial mode and launched to the public 4th November 2023

Ormonde Jayne, the renowned British perfume brand, has launched its latest fragrance, Arabesque. This enchanting and mystical scent takes perfume enthusiasts on a mesmerising olfactory journey through the Middle East, inspired by the captivating blend of flowers, fruits, and woods found in ancient art. Arabesque’s creation is a testament to the brand’s dedication to crafting unique, well-balanced fragrances that captivate the senses.

A Fragrance That Evokes the Middle East

Arabesque invites wearers to explore the evocative beauty of the Middle East through its intricate scent profile. The fragrance is a carefully curated fusion of ingredients, expertly combined to take you on a sensory journey that captures the essence of the region.

The top note of Arabesque is a vivacious and energetic blend of blackcurrant, which is skillfully intertwined with the citrusy aroma of Italian bergamot and a spicy shot of black pepper. This initial burst of fragrance sets the stage for a captivating olfactory experience. As the scent evolves, the heart of Arabesque reveals a harmonious interplay between rose and jasmine creating a sense of well-being and serenity. These floral elements combine to form the heart of the fragrance, bringing depth and complexity to the composition.

The base notes of Arabesque are a ground force of musk, moss, patchouli, and Oudh, which form a classic foundation for the fragrance. These rich, earthy elements provide a stable and lasting foundation for the more delicate and dynamic top and heart notes to build upon.

The Inspiration Behind Arabesque

Linda Pilkington, the founder of Ormonde Jayne, has a personal connection to the Middle East, which served as the primary source of inspiration for Arabesque.

“I was always looking towards the Orient from the time I was an avid traveller from a young age, gravitating East. It’s more interesting and mystical in the Middle East, far more alluring. The hustle and bustle of the souks, with the aromas of spices and fruits, vast empty spaces, staying out in the desert, watching the sunset from a sand dune. Some of my favourite memories are sailing down the Nile in a felucca, stopping to buy fruit and spices on the bank, and then more recently a fascinating visit to Ta’if, a hilltop desert town, tasting the most delicious oranges and drinking date juice.”

“Ormonde Jayne’s philosophy is intertwined with the art of travel, in particular the Silk Road. Following this ancient opiate pathway out of China and through the Eastern side of the Mediterranean is tremendously exciting as a perfumer and a creative director. There are oils and attars not widely used in the industry and Ormonde Jayne has made some of these into fine fragrances. It gives me immense joy to introduce attars like Oudh and Ta’if into fine fragrances with complex ingredients, worn by all people from around the world, it’s a very fertile aspect to the company.”

The Significance of the Name and Bottle Design

Linda’s creative process for Arabesque involved a unique approach to naming the fragrance. Unlike many perfumers who choose a name toward the end of the creative process, Linda’s notebook held the word “Arabesque” long before the scent took shape. The word itself, with its connotations of Islamic art and graceful dance movements, resonated with her and became the perfect choice for this new addition to The Four Corners of the Earth collection.

The bottle design for Arabesque is a reflection of the fragrance’s character and inspiration. Ormonde Jayne has revamped its bottles, incorporating more glass and higher lead content to create a stunning, crystal-like appearance. The choice of a light grey colour for the bottle pays homage to the intricate details seen in Islamic and Arabesque art, casting a slightly mysterious and alluring shadow.

The Creative Process Behind Arabesque

Arabesque is a testament to the meticulous and creative process followed by Ormonde Jayne in crafting their fragrances. This perfume, while complex, adheres to the brand’s unique style. The fragrance begins with an entrance of blackcurrant and a symphony of spice notes, including black pepper and saffron. It then transitions to a heady heart of jasmine and rose absolute, infused with the magic of patchouli and Oudh to bring it all together.

When creating a complex fragrance like Arabesque, the aim is to allow each individual ingredient to shine through, taking its turn in the spotlight until it harmoniously settles into a well-balanced, amberesque perfume. Arabesque is a sensory masterpiece, a sultry and intricate fragrance that captivates and mesmerizes, inspired by the rich tapestry of the Middle East.

This fragrance is a true testament to Ormonde Jayne’s commitment to creating unique, evocative scents that transcend boundaries and captivate the senses and is available now priced at £195 for 88ml and available at Harrods.com

An ancient extraction technique traditionally used to obtain the most precious essence from bergamot fruits, La Spugnatura is practised by just a few artisans in Italy. Acqua di Parma, known for overlaying the ancient with contemporary approaches, has adopted the process, but with a different citrus fruit, Arancia Vaniglia. And it is this, which forms its new-limited edition scent.

The City of Oranges

The fruit originates from Ribera in Sicily and contains some unusual contrasting olfactory properties, blending tart orange with the alluring softness of vanilla, to a bittersweet effect. Nurturing the fruit has been a long-term project for Acqua di Parma, unfolding an entirely manual extraction of the citrus essence; a skill that demands precise, delicate gestures. First, each fruit is cut in two equal halves with a well-sharpened knife. Then, using a utensil in the shape of a spoon named “cavatore,” the skin is separated from the pulp. Orange rinds are manually pressed on sea sponges, which absorb all the essence and preserve all the fruits’ facets. Finally, these sponges full of essential oil are squeezed with precise movements into a terracotta pot.

A precious elixir

This painstaking manual process gives rise to the ingredient’s scarcity and the limited edition nature of the fragrance. Only 300g of essence is extracted from approximately 100kg of fruit, and two artisans can work through a volume equaling 300 kg of fruit in a day. And every single part of this fruit plays its part, ensuring zero waste. This unique ingredient gives rise to a joyful, luminous and embracing aroma, much like the glorious rays of the Italian sun. The initial burst of citrus notes brings contrasts, as does the Arancia Vaniglia, which combines the freshness typical of citrus fruits with a degree of softness and roundness; a contrast which is also found in the yellow mandarin versus the bitter almond, which adds a bittersweet touch. Master perfumer François Demachy also adds black pepper for a touch of texture and brilliance.

Breaking the mould

The fragrance is contained in a blue, porcelain bottle, representing the Blu Mediterraneo collection, of which this is a part. Like the production of the essence, the creation of the bottle is a lengthy and care-filled journey. First, the mould is created, into which the porcelain mix is manually poured to form its iconic Art Déco form. This is then rotated several times on its axis to ensure that the mixture adheres to the sides and is turned upside down to unload any extra mix. Then, the bottle is left to dry for 30-40 minutes before being removed from the mould in a solid form. Each bottle is refined, removing any minimal imperfections to obtain an even surface that is smooth to the touch. It is then dipped into a glaze bath and placed to bake in an oven for 8 hours, during which the bottle takes on a deeper blue tone that is highlighted by a shiny finish.

Finishing touches

Lastly, the bottle is hand-embellished with white, burnished orange and golden motifs (a nod to its ingredients), before being baked for a second time to set the décor. Capped off with a blue porcelain lid, the bottle has a neck that is made from a unique grinding technique developed specifically for Acqua di Parma and is fitted with a removable screw top pump. The label on the bottle is made from scrap powder from marble quarries while the iconic cylindrical box is made from FSC-certified paper set in a special blue tone to match the porcelain bottle.

]]>

The Luxury Editor was recently invited to Istanbul to discover more about Acibadem, Turkey’s leading private healthcare company, and pioneer of the latest protocols optimising results and safety for cosmetic surgery procedures, including hair transplant.

Luxury medical tourism is an established part of modern life. Living in the USA, UK and Europe means we have a number of options open to us for elective surgery, embracing cosmetic procedures, oncology, fertility, and other highly specialised procedures from heart care to orthopaedics. We can avoid delays in public systems, and access the latest in technology, less invasive surgical techniques, and more personalised care by opting for private treatment in our home country or abroad. Turkey is increasingly a popular choice. Yet how can we be sure, we’re making the right decision?

Turkey is a super hub for medical tourism

Between 2021 and 2022, the number of Brits travelling to Istanbul for medical procedures at Acibadem’s hospitals has increased by 60%. This includes many medical disciplines, but the leading procedures are cosmetic, with breast surgery the most popular choice by women, followed by rhinoplasty. For male patients, probably unsurprisingly, hair transplantation tops the list, also followed by rhinoplasty.

Turkey is a well established destination for international health tourism, with an advanced private sector servicing a global market. It has become a ‘super hub,’ confirms Professor Mehmet Veli Karaaltin, M.D. a renowned aesthetic, plastic, and reconstructive surgeon with Acibadem. Turkey’s geographical position, within a relatively short flight of much of the world, combined with highly educated and experienced doctors, together with much lower medical costs has driven the huge growth in medical tourism to Turkey.

Being well informed

With this enhanced popularity of course comes a responsibility. The country has a mixed perception, and Acibadem, is committed to world-class healthcare, being eager to tell its story and inform patients about how best to choose a private health supplier. As with all medical tourism destinations, there are highly professional suppliers and smaller clinics that are not so well structured they offer a good service. All medical procedures carry risk and patients need to be informed to make the right decision.

Successful patient outcomes

The factors affecting a successful patient outcome appear from the very start of the patient journey.

Firstly, there is the initial assessment. The healthcare provider must effectively assess the patient. Acibadem is opening a network of Health Points. These clinics, outside of Turkey, are based locally so that patients can access free consultations and second opinions, while also allowing Acibadem doctors to assess the patient’s suitability for travel, suitability for their chosen procedure, and then in turn offer professional aftercare. For example, there is an Acibadem Health Point in London, and advanced plans to extend the network in Europe.

Then of course the next important factor is the skills and specialist expertise of the surgeon and medical staff. Acibadem sponsor the finest students in their own university hospital, creating a highly skilled team that goes on to train with the expert surgeons, doctors, embryologists, and oncologists in the network of Acibadem hospitals. All procedures are performed in full-service hospitals, so if a complication should arise, specialists are always immediately on hand to provide help, supported by world-class technology.

In fact, Acibadem partners with the world’s major medical equipment manufacturers, like Siemens, giving them access to the very latest equipment from ultra-high-tech imaging to the newest cancer treatment machines.

Transparency

‘We understand that there is scepticism with regards to medical tourism,’ explained Oğuz Can Şahin, our host in Istanbul, and Manager of International Communications at Acibadem. ‘That’s why we want to be completely transparent, inviting media to our hospitals and Health Points and let them discover in their own way, our quality of medical care’.

The global pandemic has put national, state-run health services under huge pressure, and the backlog in surgeries has exposed many weaknesses. Patients are seeking alternatives to move ahead with surgery, to improve their quality of life, whilst also saving money from the cost of private procedures in their home countries.

Acibadem is keen to highlight that all its hospitals meet or exceed the standards of medical instructions in the UK, USA and beyond yet provide medical services for less money. Often half the price or less.

Each surgeon we met during our visit emphasised the importance of choosing a healthcare provider based on the skills the medical team and the level of technical and medical support provided by the hospital. This is the priority, before price.

Acibadem has multi-disciplinary hospitals, each with advanced intensive care and emergency facilities. They offer surgeries within an environment where the patient has access to a broad range of medical professionals 24 hours a day. This means that procedures are performed in a much safer environment. A smaller clinic, especially when it comes to cosmetic procedures, could never offer this level of medical expertise, whether in our home country or abroad.

Hair Transplant Centre

Turkey is well known for cosmetic procedures, such as male hair transplants. It was not until I met Professor Mehmet Veli Karaaltin, M.D that I began to truly understand the complexities of the procedure and the importance of choosing the right team to perform the operation.

Charismatic and chatty, Professor Karaaltin was easy to talk to. Educated internationally including the USA, he’s fluent in English. He clearly and expertly explained how he has pioneered a new protocol that ensures a very high success rate for hair transplant, including a new regenerative cellular therapy that enables the grafted hair to grow back faster and healthier.

‘This is not a treatment for male baldness,’ confirms Karaaltin, ‘instead it is a camouflage’. The healthy hair is harvested and redistributed on the scalp, so it is imperative that the hair grows well in order to have a good result. Look at the case studies online, the results can from Acibadem can be extraordinary. He’s recently had the procedure himself – his new thick hair makes him look 10 years younger.

He conceded that some clinics have been reckless in their approach leading to patient dissatisfaction and unnecessary health risks.

By contract at Acibadem, the approach is based upon profound amounts of scientific research and testing. He leads an expert team of technicians that follow a strict protocol to make sure that patients are truly suitable for the procedure, that the operations are always conducted with the utmost dedication to safety, that the harvesting of hair maximises the health of hair grafts, and that the patient receives complete care from the moment they make their initial consultation in their home country through to professional aftercare through the Acibadem Health Point infrastructure.

This visit to Istanbul was inspiring. The Acibadem hospitals are extraordinary – combining the design and services of 5-star hotels with a world-class level of medical care, driven by the Acibadem medical university foundation, and continual training and evaluation of the medical team.

To date, as I write this, I have not tried a procedure from Acibadem. I am interested in a hair transplant, and I will be happy to share my experience in due course.

Yet, what I can say, having worked in communications for medical tourism for over 15 years, is that I can recognise that Acibadem is a truly serious healthcare provider. We spent days on-site, from eating in the hospital restaurants (delicious by the way) to meeting surgeons and touring the university hospital training facilities. All very impressive. There is no other word for it. Their website is full of patient testimonials and their doctors have been attracting international recognition for years, like Professor Ahmet Alanay, M.D. whose pioneering work on spine health issues such as scoliosis has made him an international leader.

Thanks to this world-class team, Acibadem is trusted by the state-run healthcare systems of many countries that send patients to Acibadem for treatment – whether for scoliosis of the spine, the need for the latest specialist cancer treatment or for successful IVF.

This is a health provider we are all going to be hearing much more about in Europe, as they continue their international investment and growth. In my mind, this can only be a good thing, as they work to inform patients, so they make the right choices for elective procedures. The health provider also continues to innovate with treatments and procedures to the benefit of the broader health care system, building supportive, beneficial relationships with national health services.

Launching across the world in March 2023, the new take on Colonia’s signature fragrance bottle is the first part of a new collaboration between the Italian olfactory house and SR_A, Ross, the London-based, industrial design studio. Inspired by the heritage of Italian and British modernism

Colonia was the debut fragrance from Acqua di Parma back in the early 20th century, an uplifting citrus-blend evocative of Italy. But its scent has proven timeless, enduring as a favourite for over 100 years. Now Samuel Ross (an industrialist, multi-disciplinary artist) pays homage to its past, reimagining the product through a contemporary lens, looking to the future. The buildings and cultural landscapes of both London and Milan served as the initial inspiration, with the structures of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers depicted under the sun — an ongoing motif for Acqua di Parma. Ross brings the urban brutalism of the UK’s capital into a hyper-flat, uber-pigmented yellow (Acqua di Parma’s optimistic signature colour) imprinted with SR_A’s visual handwriting. Sun_Rise_Yellow contrasts with primary shades of Grass_Blade_Green and Ultra_Orange, an industrial nod to Samuel Ross’ own practice and design language.

A prism of Parma

The familiar Art Deco bottle contains the original fragrance of radiant lemon, Calabrian bergamot and orange, with a heart of lavender, rose and rosemary and woody notes of vetiver, sandalwood and patchouli. Now the label has been stripped back with lithographed lettering, representing Acqua di Parma’s codes in its purest form. Samuel Ross’s incarnation of the receptacle is a prism, from which light refracts; held up to the light it becomes an interactive, mini art installation, seen completely differently depending on where you are and the point at which it is held aloft. It’s perfect for a forward-thinking digital generation that wishes to preserve gentle elements of a bygone era.

An ode to cross-borders and cross-communities, the fragrance has been co-branded, with retail spaces designed in tandem by SR_A and Acqua di Parma. Unpolished aluminium shelving blends with powder-coated pigment fixtures, providing an immersive shopping experience to draw browsers from the online world into the offline domain.

300 numbered, special-edition collectors bottles spanning three colours are available, now exclusively at Selfridges London and on their website priced at £186 for 100ml.
