More than just a spa, Rock Spa at Hard Rock Hotel Marbella fuses the essence of rock with indulgent spa treatments, where music becomes the protagonist, including the immersive experience of the Synchronicity massage to the refreshing Face the Music, which fuses the vibration of sound with quality organic ingredients.

Hard Rock Hotel Marbella presents its exclusive Rock Spa, a sanctuary of serenity and revitalisation that promises to pamper, soothe and recharge, with new facilities and carefully designed treatments.

You can read The Luxury Editor profile review of Hard Rock Hotel Marbella here.

Since its foundation, Hard Rock Hotels has excelled in providing guests with unique and unforgettable experiences, fusing a passion for music with luxury and hospitality. The Rock Spa concept was born with the vision of providing guests with a wellness experience that goes beyond the conventional. With more than 20 Hard Rock hotels around the world, the brand has expanded globally, bringing the unique essence of Rock Spa to multiple destinations. Today, the majority of these distinguished Hard Rock Hotels feature exclusive spa services, providing guests with a haven of relaxation inspired by the rock and roll philosophy.

The Rock Spa Marbella offers two rooms for massages, body treatments and facials, as well as a spacious couple’s suite with two massage tables. In addition, visitors have exclusive access to the water circuit area, offering the possibility to experience wellness with counter-current swimming, as well as a steam room and sauna.

Beyond simply being a spa, this new space fuses the essence of rock with indulgent spa practices, creating a unique balance between the vibrant spirit of music and the serenity of wellness. “We invite all those seeking an authentic experience to explore Rock Spa and discover a haven where relaxation meets authenticity,” suggests Ignacio Gómez-Escolar, General Manager of Hard Rock Hotel Marbella.

‘Rhythm & Motion’

Within its range of treatments, the hotel introduces an innovation in the field of wellness with “Rhythm & Motion”. This revolutionary concept, exclusive to Rock Spa, provides an immersive experience through vibrations amplified by a musical bell, applying pressures and sequences as fundamental elements.

At Hard Rock Hotel Marbella, four types of massages are currently offered that incorporate this technique, fusing music and exclusive technology from Rock Spa. One of them is Synchronicity, a massage that combines a carefully selected soundtrack with massage techniques. The precise integration of each note and rhythm, in sync with the massage, creates a multi-sensory relaxation experience that redefines traditional standards of well-being. On the other hand, Face the Music is a designed facial rejuvenation treatment that fuses the therapeutic benefits of sound vibration with clinically proven organic products, providing an experience totally different to conventional facial care methods. Smooth Operator and Wrap Remix are the two available body massage options using the Rhythm & Motion technique.

Fusion of Wellness and Entertainment

Hard Rock Hotel Marbella continues to redefine the concept of hospitality, offering experiences that combine the best of wellness at Rock Spa with other hotel highlights. For example, the innovative proposal of the Rock Spa + healthy breakfast in their Sessions buffet stands out.

Pablo Picasso changed art for ever. An extraordinary innovator, constantly experimenting and creating, he has left an exceptional artistic legacy. He was born in Malaga, Southern Spain in 1881 and spent his early life in this sun-splashed Mediterranean city.
To mark the 50 anniversary of Picasso’s passing, Anantara Villa Padierna Palace, Marbella has created an extraordinary guest stay, ‘Luxury Retreat: A Palatial Stay Inspired by Picasso’ that celebrates the art, culture, and cuisine of his beloved Malaga province. Here The Luxury Editor shares with you the inside track on what to expect.

First impressions of the Anantara Villa Padierna Palace Marbella are impressive. It’s a palatial property, set in a golf valley, with views over the greens towards the sea. It is Anantara’s flagship resort in Southern Spain. Sheltered by majestic mountains, this Mediterranean resort of suites and villas (The Obama Villa once hosted the former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama) is close to some of the country’s most beautiful ‘white villages’, the prestigious town of Marbella, and the sparkling Mediterranean sea. Expect a compelling combination of European elegance with upscale gastronomy across multiple dining venues, as well as exceptional leisure facilities including a super-stylish beach & racquet club, an award-winning spa and championship golf courses.

Choosing the ‘Luxury Retreat: A Palatial Stay Inspired by Picasso’ is probably the finest way to experience much of what makes Anantara Villa Padierna so special. In addition to a stay in a palatial room, guests enjoy:

  • Return airport transfers from Malaga Airport
  • Picasso welcome amenities
  • Spa treatment at the Anantara Spa
  • Malaga Picasso tour experience
  • Exclusive Picasso Dining by Design experience for two

Check-in and suite

Arriving at the resort, and entering the lofty lobby of the Anantara Marbella, one’s experience truly begins. This magnificent light-filled atrium features seasonal floral masterpieces. We arrived in autumn, with the theme brought to life with warm blooms, richly textured leaves, and fruit.

Here check-in is a comfortable affair, seated in dappled sunlight, sipping fine cava, and enjoying a chocolate treat, fashioned as an olive, evocative of one of Andalucia’s most prized gourmet products, extra virgin olive oil.

The treats continue as one arrives at the suite, with welcome handmade chocolates presented an artist’s palette, and a limited edition print of a charming sketch of the Anantara Villa Padierna by renowned artist, Jorge Parra, with his personal homage to Picasso.

It’s a delightful, and unique gesture and sets the scene for this palatial stay inspired by Pablo Picasso. The suite makes us feel like VIPs, with its majestic decoration of sparkling crystal chandeliers, fine art, antiques, and French Windows that open to the lush gardens. It’s the perfect place to take a moment and relax.

Spa & Wellness

Seeking tranquillity and rejuvenation is reason enough to come to Anantara Villa Padierna, home to one of Spain’s most elegant spas, styled like classic baths, with a touch of Roman flair.

As part of this guest package, one can enjoy a signature spa massage. The treatment rooms are set apart from the pool and wet areas, so they are particularly peaceful. Expect a comfortable and wide treatment table, and experienced therapists.  The whole experience is world-class.

Gastronomy

Yet, the real reason I’m here is to be immersed in Picasso’s Malaga. This begins with the fine dining. There’s plenty of choice, with the Eastern Mediterranean delights of Óla Beirut, the Japanese refinement of 99 Sushi Bar & Restaurant, and the elegance of La Veranda.

You can read more about La Veranda’s classic dishes here.

Yet it is La Loggia that is calling with its celebration of local Andalucian and Spanish cuisine.  Here guests and visitors can experience a contemporary Spanish menu inspired by favourite dishes of Picasso, as well as local specialities. From a typical Malaga salad of cod and orange, a velvety ‘porra’ tomato, bread, and olive oil cream, to hearty fish balls.

This is sophisticated comfort food that truly reflects the destination and the way Picasso would have eaten in Spain.

Read our review of the Anantara Koh Yao Yai

Private Dining

The culinary highlight of the stay was our Dining by Design experience. Anantara’s private dining is extraordinary. Anantara Villa Padierna is a magical property, with so many special places to enjoy private dining from under the stars, to shaded terraces. In the autumn and winter, the elegant private salons make for a cosy and stylish venue.

The Picasso-inspired private dining is a delight, with a table setting evocative of the artist’s studio, with paint brushes and even small wooden pain paint palettes for the bread.

The dishes again reflect the heritage of Picasso’s southern Spain. A dedicated waiter achieved the perfect balance for us between attentive service and leaving us to enjoy each course in private – it was a dream.

Picasso’s Malaga

Malaga city has emerged as one of Southern Europe’s most dynamic cities, with a vibrant contemporary art scene, and a cultural wealth that includes the renowned Museo Picasso Málaga. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the museum has attracted international attention for its remarkable collections that tell the story of Picasso’s life and his impact on the world of art.

Anantara Villa Padierna can arrange a private guided tour of Malaga, Picasso’s birthplace. One is whisked to the regional capital in style, where a guide is awaiting us. Each tour can be personalised. Of course, it includes a visit to the Picasso Museum which is home to more than 230 of his works.

The museum’s permanent collection is arranged chronologically, showing the overlap of his personal life and relationships with his radical artistic innovation through his abstract works.

With a guide, his story and works really resonate, and inspire you to delve back into history to find out more.

Until the end of March 2024, the museum’s temporary exhibition, ‘The Echo of Picasso’ brings together contemporary works by artists inspired by Picasso, highlighting how his cultural impact continues to reverberate for generations. The works are in different groups, each with a Picasso original as the inspiration – a really cool exhibit.

We also returned to Picasso’s birthplace on Plaza de la Merced – here the Picasso Foundation at the Casa Natal de Picasso offers a more intimate perspective with insights regarding his early years in Malaga.

Amongst the sketches on show are 9 of the lithographs of ‘The Bull’, Picasso’s 1945 work which is a simple, easily grasped guide to abstraction.

The tour also includes a visit to Malaga’s magnificent Cathedral, as well as the charming church where Picasso was baptised.

Then the amazing Magala trip ends with a typical Malaga tapas dinner at the city’s most iconic tavern, Pimpi Restaurant. Here the young Picasso famously sketched Malaga’s ubiquitous pigeons and the bar restaurant is one of the most evocative locations in the old town.

Rosewood Villa Magna boasts an extraordinary collection of more than 382 works of art by 43 artists that bring beauty to each space, reflecting the unique spirit of the Anglada Palace, and transforming this ultra-luxury hotel into a cultural meeting point and artistic immersion.
This latest exhibition is a unique opportunity to explore space and light through the sacred geometry of emotional pieces that reflect on the universe and its infinity.

Madrid’s famous art triangle, made up of the three most important museums in the capital: the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, and the Reina Sofia Museum, has been joined by a secret corner located in the heart of the Paseo de la Castellana, where some of the most fascinating contemporary works are exhibited: the Rosewood Villa Magna hotel.

You can read Andrew Forbes’ The Luxury Editor Review of Rosewood Villa Magna here.

In this context, the influential Madrid hotel, which continues to show its commitment to culture and art through cultural experiences with Opera Gallery, is pleased to announce an exceptional artistic collaboration with renowned British artist Anthony James. This unique event brings to Madrid a multidimensional artistic experience that will immerse visitors in the particular creative world of a sculptor who leaves no one indifferent, through a visual demonstration of the infinity and divinity that we all carry within us.

Known for his monumental installations, James’ work pivots around minimalism, materiality and experimentation with light and space. “It doesn’t matter what your educational level is, what language you speak, what culture you grew up in or where you are from, my work is about a universal language based on sacred geometry,” assures the artist.

This is also true at Rosewood Villa Magna, where the hotel’s historic walls are enriched and connect people from all over the world, establishing itself as the ideal environment, due to its commitment to cultural diversity, for the most avant-garde and groundbreaking artistic expressions.

In this case, the two sculptures by Anthony James – “Wall Portal (Solar Black)” and “Dodecahedron (Gold)”- will be on display in the lobby and in the corridor of the Tarde.O bar, inside which visitors will also find a collection of real and imaginary portraits of personalities that have shaped the Palacio de Anglada throughout its history.

In addition, within the prestigious hotel you can continue to freely enjoy the work of one of the most international contemporary Spanish artists, Manolo Valdés. Specifically, it will be possible to admire “The City”, a fascinating piece that shows the movement in a hypnotic way, trapping the viewer in a game of steel figures and colours of Murano glass. The bronze head follows the scheme of Matisse’s Odalisques, in which the influential Valencian artist delights in the orography of the material to reveal the beauty of this feminine face.

It is worth remembering that, in its commitment to culture, Rosewood Villa Magna has an extraordinary collection of more than 380 works of art that bring beauty to each space, reflecting the unique spirit of the Anglada Palace. Inside the hotel you can contemplate marvellous works such as “I Dream in Balenciaga,” a bespoke piece inspired by Madrid aesthetics and Spanish tailoring, from Balenciaga to Oteyza. Another of the dazzling works that Rosewood Villa Magna holds is “Waldweben Diptych”; inspired by the romantic opera “Siegfried” by Wagner. In addition, you can admire the most surrealist photographs of the Lanzarote photographer Fares Micue or the work “Spreading a Wing” by Josephine Cardin, which explores themes such as femininity and sensitivity.

This immersive art experience can be experienced with a guided tour by art expert Raquel Sáez who, with more than 20 years as an expert in artistic dissemination, will provide a unique perspective on the world of art and Spanish culture. The entire experience will begin with a meeting at the Flor y Nata pastry shop, including a coffee or tea to go, and will end with an exquisite, handmade afternoon treat.

The arrival at Rosewood Villa Magna of two of Anthony James’ most iconic pieces is sure to get people talking because, as the visual artist notes, “Art is a way we can communicate with each other. It’s a great way to start a conversation.”

Rosewood Villa Magna is includes in The Luxury Editor Best Luxury Hotels in Madrid.

Found in a small hamlet on the protected natural south east coast of Mallorca is the 5-star El Coto Boutique Hotel & Spa. Family-owned and run for the past 3 decades, this refined and intimate property has become a perennial favourite amongst guests and visitors who not only feel embraced by the warm, personalised welcome, but by the tranquillity of the village, between the salt flats and the sea.
Food and wine at El Coto is renowned, with the hotel boasting the largest private collection of Mallorca wines in Spain, and gourmet menus that change each day. Yet the latest draw to this little gem of a hotel is their stunning new spa and wellness centre, Silentia.

It’s such a pleasure, after all these years exploring and getting to know Mallorca, that I can still discover some gems, and sparkling destinations that surprise and impress.  El Coto Boutique Hotel & Spa is one such jewel. I was recently invited to the inauguration of the property’s new Silentia Spa, and over the short visit, I really fell for the place.

This is a special hotel, and understandably so, as it has been created with love and care by Miriam and Pepe Navarrete who over the past 30 years have continually enhanced and improved El Coto to its present 5-star status while still maintaining the personal, family style that is so loved by guests that return year after year.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by their sons, Patric and Cristian who as the next generation are continuing the tradition of personalised hospitality.

Mediterranean Hideaway

El Coto is a charming Mediterranean hideaway, with a classic Riviera vibe and a timeless elegance. It is found in the sleepy hamlet of Colonia de Sant Jordi, a little off the tourist trail, yet popular with islanders for their summer holidays and weekend escapades. Those in the known come back year after year to enjoy the clear waters of the bays and coves and the unspoilt coastline and pine forests.

Rooms look out to the Salines de S’Avall salt lakes and flats, partial sea views and the garden pool. The roof terrace, a favourite for sunbathing or sundowner cocktails, offers striking views of the local area and the emblematic beach, Es Trenc.

To the east and west the coastline and countryside is protected, providing a haven for wildlife and a wonderful area to explore. This is the Mallorca of a bygone age, where you feel connected to the destination and the environment.

Wellbeing

With this peaceful, natural, and calming environment, it makes perfect sense to come here for a wellness retreat or pampering spa holiday. The sparkling Silentia spa, opened in autumn 2023, marks a new era for El Coto, redefining this gourmet hideaway into a wellness destination with innovative treatments and exceptional facilities.

Constructed with a strong emphasis on sustainability, Silentia is a dreamy well-being centre. These top-notch purpose-built facilities include an indoor pool, hydrotherapy circuit, a gym, and treatment rooms that open to private gardens. There is also an authentic hammam with various classic and contemporary treatments.

Amongst the spacious treatment rooms is a double treatment space that includes a private sauna, hydro-massage spa bath, and private garden.

This is probably the best-equipped doubles treatment room I have seen, a perfect retreat for couples therapies like the ‘Isla de Los Dioses’ ritual. This bespoke well-being journey includes a sauna, silk & gold skin exfoliation, a herbal spa bath, massage and facial followed by a healthy lunch.

The spa treatment menu is extensive, created and curated by Silentia Spa Director Antoniya Stoycheva Atanasova.

I chose the Himalayan salt treatment, a first for me. This therapy includes a calming, healing massage with warm, solid salt spheres and paddles. It’s super relaxing, with the salt and oil leaving your skin radiant. It feels appropriate to choose a treatment with salt, as the Salines de S’Avall salt pans are nearby, said to be amongst the oldest in the world, dating back to Roman times.

Guests of El Coto Boutique Hotel have preferential access to the Silentia spa, including complimentary access to the pool and hydrotherapy circuit. If you are visiting Mallorca, you can also enjoy the facilities of El Coto Hotel with a Day Pass, giving you the opportunity to enjoy the gardens, pool, spa, and gastronomy.

Gastronomy

Each element of a stay at El Coto Boutique Hotel & Spa is refined, curated and thoughtful.  This is more than evident with the culinary experience at the property.

The hotel’s wine cellar is a delight to visit, for a private wine tasting or tour, taking in the extraordinary collection of Spanish wines, Mallorca wines and fine French Champagnes.

Restaurant Bistro is the relaxed eatery on the sun-drenched terrace overlooking the salt pans, perfect for a refreshing spritz and local seafood or maybe an open brioche sandwich, citrus and spice marinated salmon, avocado cream, and cucumber.

Restaurant Salma, with tables set around the pool, makes each evening feel like an occasion. Dinner is a 5-course, gourmet adventure. Guests can choose from a selection of culinary dishes for each course, as well as seasonal creations from the daily suggestions, such as ‘Soller’ red prawn carpaccio with sturgeon caviar, or sea bass in salt crust or a vegetarian roasted cauliflower marinated in curry and coconut milk with toasted nuts and roasted peppers.

Service is polished natural and friendly, led by Cristian Navarrete. The ambiance is elegant and relaxed with regular evenings of live music.

Accommodation

Choose from 50 rooms and suites, decorated in a classic style with some bold details, pops of colour and pieces of art. There are all the 5-star amenities you would expect, from a mini bar to bathroom amenities as well as an excellent Illy coffee machine and tea-making facilities.

El Coto Boutique Hotel & Spa has peaceful grounds of palms, cactus, and flowering shrubs. A charming, secluded garden, shaded by Mediterranean pines is the perfect place to relax and disconnect.

El Coto is an impressive boutique, with beautiful attention to detail and now a spectacular spa. Yet it was the warmth of welcome that really made an impact on me. The whole team feel like a family, which I guess is understandable, as many have worked here for years, and some decades.

In short, El Coto offers that rare and invaluable quality, genuine hospitality.

METT has brought its signature hospitality to Southern Spain, with the opening of its beachside boutique hotel between Marbella and Estepona. With its spectacular 50 metre Azure Beach Pool, MOI spa, trendy beach chiringuito restaurant, signature Italian dining and soon a Greek restaurant, METT Hotel and Beach Resort Estepona-Marbella is all about socialising, fantastic dining and relishing the modern Mediterranean lifestyle.
Set right on the one of the coast’s broad beaches, this new boutique resort of 249 rooms and suites offers guests, visitors, and locals the chance to be immersed in METT’s unique dining experiences that fuse gastronomy with feel-good music and entertainment.

METT Hotel and Beach Resort Estepona-Marbella brings a new flavour of holiday experience to Andalucia’s Costa del Sol. Embodied by the resort’s tagline of Social Living, guests are promised a destination where they can not only recharge and unwind in the sun, but also celebrate life and have fun, enjoying dining, entertainment, a spa and a METT’s ‘tranquil service style’.

As soon as you arrive, you are embraced by the property’s seductively summery feel, with a beautiful interior and exterior design that captures the allure of the Mediterranean. Lots of natural materials, lush plants, and a harmonious blend of brilliant white, with sea blues and earthy greens together create the perfect setting for a beachside break.

The check-in is professional but relaxed. Sitting in the huge atrium, you are greeted with a welcome cocktail menu, and it’s from this moment your holiday begins.

Gastronomy

METT dining is open to all, and part of the buzz is the mix of local residents, visitors and guests at the restaurants and beach club. Giannis Toman is the Executive Chef at METT Hotel and Beach Resort Estepona-Marbella. With his wealth of experience and creativity in French, Spanish, Greek, Italian and fusion cuisine, Chef Toman is the ideal talent to launch the signature dining experiences of METT.

Isola Ristorante Italiano

2023 has seen the opening of Isola, the brand’s signature Ristorante Italiano, originally founded in Dubai’s Jumeirah Islands Clubhouse. Isola Restaurant Estepona is a celebration of Mediterranean cuisine, taking principal inspiration from the south of Italy. This destination restaurant experience is about truly homemade dishes with a contemporary menu of pasta and pizza as well as other Italian favourites, accompanied by an impressive wine list from Italy and Spain.

Our experience at Isola was impressive. The dishes are expertly executed, and the ingredients are clearly top quality.  We began with a classic carpaccio, dressed in parmesan and rocket – superb. The burrata was generous and creamy, deliciously simple, allowing the quality of the flavoursome ingredients to shine. The calamari is always a favourite of mine and here it has a depth of flavour with excellent seasoning.

There is also a menu of light and delicious pinsa pizzas, that are bursting with texture and flavour, yet without the heavy feeling of some doughy pizzas. The steak was one of the best I have had on the coast in a long time.  Finally, the Tiramisu did not disappoint with a lightness that is matched by a creamy richness.

Cocktails were creative and beautifully presented, while the wine list included the option to enjoy different wines by the glass.

Isola has raised the bar for hotel dining and is worthy of its status as a restaurant that visitors will travel to.

Azure Beach Pool & Restaurant

The 50-metre Azure Beach Pool is at the heart of METT Hotel and Beach Resort Estepona-Marbella. Resident and guest DJs set the tone throughout the day, as the attentive team offer a menu of refreshing juices, cocktails, and light bites from the Azure Beach menu.

There are cabana day beds, as well as double sunbeds, and sun loungers on the beach. What’s more, you can book one of the beach lounges, overlooking the sands, with private hot tub, day beds and table service for food and drinks.

From the pool, you can catch glimpses of the beach and sea beyond, connecting you to the beauty of the destination. As the sun sets, the pool sparkles with underwater lights and cocktails are served at El Bar de Lola.

The Chiringuito restaurant is right on the beach, beautifully styled with banana palms and wooden furniture. Expect a diverse choice of dishes including sushi platers, pizza, yakitori skewers, healthy salads like red quinoa, and bowls including salmon teriyaki. The wine list is great and includes local wines like the delicious Cloe from Ronda.

Accommodation

METT has a wonderfully minimalist take on the Mediterranean style, with bright and airy rooms, decorated with natural elements. Each room and suite is thoughtfully equipped with a steamer for clothes, an excellent mini-bar with premium drinks, tea and coffee-making facilities including an espresso machine and, in the bathroom, expect the signature METT amenities tailored for you. The bathroom amenities are by Botanyc – fabulously aromatic, with scents of Bergamot, Lychee and jasmine.

There are 6 room types and 7 suite types. Guests can choose from a variety of spaces, including suite-up rooms with direct access to a pool, or even two-bedroom suites and suites with large private rooftop terraces. There is an all day room service menu too.

Wellbeing

The MOI Spa is set to open for the 2024 season, offering a luxurious wellbeing space including an indoor pool, hydrotherapy circuit and treatment rooms.

RAISE Fitness is the gym offering with Technogym equipment.

Bicycles are also available, a great way to explore the area, as the boardwalk along the beach runs for kilometres and is a safe and beautiful way to get a feel for the destination. If you’re tempted to explore further, then the Guest Experience team can recommend excursions and day trips.

METT Hotel and Beach Resort Estepona-Marbella is a very welcome addition to the Costa del Sol, bringing a new style of hospitality and some superb gastronomy.

Cortijo Santa María 1962 Sotogrande, pays tribute to Barbate tuna with an exclusive menu throughout November 2023. SO/ Sotogrande’s Executive Chef Leandro Caballero has created a new ‘Tuna Experience’ menu, a five-course gourmet dinner showcasing Bluefin Tuna, the emblematic product of the coast of Cádiz.

This week we had the privilege to savour a preview of the new Tuna Experience menu soon to be launched at SO/ Sotogrande SPA & Golf Resort, the five-star hotel in Southern Spain’s most exclusive destination.

To commence the autumn culinary season the resort has created this exclusive tasting menu at Cortijo Santa María 1962, paying tribute to Barbate tuna, one of the culinary jewels of the region.

Available from 1 November, the new menu by Leandro Caballero, Executive Chef of Cortijo Santa María 1962 is also available with a wine pairing.

Throughout the menu, Caballero has showcased different parts of the tuna.

The feast begins with the mojama, which he presents in wafer-thin slices on crispy crackers seasoned with pine nuts and olive oil – an inspired dish.

Then the tuna in tartar with white Malaga coconut garlic soup – bold and original flavours that went down well with everyone at the table.

The ‘ventresca’ tuna belly, thinly sliced, is accompanied by blanched vegetables, prepared with local oranges from San Martín del Tesorillo – this was a favourite.

Then a hearty dish of the priced tuna cheek, slow cooked at low temperature, served with orange and saffron rice.

To round off the experience we ended on a sweet note with local mangoes San Martín del Tesorillo with pineapple ice cream.

This exclusive menu is only available at Cortijo Santa María 1962.

Tuna Experience menu 85€ per person.

Wine pairing 45€ per person

Southern Spain still promises balmy evenings for dining under the stars, and for the most elegant experience, consider La Veranda restaurant Marbella, the enchanting all-year restaurant of Anatara Villa Padierna, with its stunning terrace.

The outdoor setting of this iconic restaurant is ideal for enjoying La Veranda’s classic recipes and signature service, offering some of the most iconic dishes and guests’ all-time favourites from the past 20 years.

A visit to La Veranda is to savour both classic and innovative dishes created by chef Santiago Altuna, paired with a new wine menu featuring new Champagnes and Burgundies, as well as local favourites.

The ambiance

Andalucia’s most renowned Mediterranean coast, the emblematic Costa del Sol has remerged as one of Europe’s most sought-after destinations, a sun-soaked favourite with an exceptional choice of resorts, hotels and restaurants. Yet few places can compare to the refined elegance and sophistication of Anantara Villa Padierna Palace Resort, found between Marbella, Benahavís and Estepona. Evocative of a Renaissance palace, this wellness, golf and gastronomic resort is surrounded by towering cypress, palms and manicured sub-tropical gardens.

The menu

Chef Santiago Altuna’s dishes emphasise local ingredients and recipes.

Starters include local Almadraba tuna tartare on toasted brioche with light cherry dressing.

Classic dishes include the lobster salad with lamb’s lettuce, blue tomatoes and raspberry vinaigrette.

Vegans are also looked after with grilled spiced white asparagus with a fennel, grapefruit and cashew vinaigrette; Thai aubergine with balsamic reduction and Kalamata olives; or sweet potato, carrots and tomato with red cabbage and pear purée, yoghurt sauce, lime and cilantro.

For the main courses, the menu offers fish dishes, including wild sea bass loin on baby leeks with pumpkin purée, and red mullet with green banana curry and grilled Dutch onions.

The giant Huelva scarlet shrimp (Carabinero) with asparagus and fried roe foam is spectacular and beautifully presented.

Among the meats are roast suckling lamb shoulder with its grilled sweetbreads and pickled aubergines; crispy duck magret with kumquat and mini roasted potatoes; and roasted Iberian pork with mashed potato and rocket, pistachio sponge and truffle and Parmesan sauce.

Desserts include Grand Marnier soufflé with a delicious crème Anglaise; chocolate cream with a hazelnut praline centre and cocoa and coffee ‘sand’; and caramelised apple with crunchy puff pastry and vanilla cream. The classic crêpe suzette is prepared by the table with flair.

The terrace

The terrace is a magnificent outdoor space surrounded by the lush greenery of the gardens. Tables are set around an elegant stone fountain, shaded below a twisted wisteria, creating a truly magical setting for dinner.

Live music is from Friday to Sunday, further enhancing the unique ambience.

The Restaurant

La Veranda stands out for its artful decoration with centuries-old tapestries on the walls, and radiant golden lamps, creating an intimate ambience. The centrepiece is “La Merienda” by local photographer Jesús Chacón, which crowns the fireplace in the living room. This endearing image of three Marbellero neighbours sharing a snack at home sets the tone for memorable meals.

The Cellar

The dishes at La Veranda may be accompanied by excellent local and international wines from the cellar of more than 300 bottles, and sommelier José Luis Morales – a passionate advocate for Jerez wines – is on hand to advise diners. The wine list includes more than 16 finos and manzanillas, the perfect accompaniment to so many different dishes.

La Veranda’s wine list changes every season and this summer’s new additions include a truly diverse selection of Champagnes including some exciting vintages like the Salon Blanc de Blancs 2007 and Dom Perignon 2012, as well as the Krug Grande Cuvee EME Edition. There is also a new selection of Burgundies as well as local wines from all over Andalusia.

We were guests at La Veranda in its first season, and you can read about The Luxury Editor La Veranda experience here.

Information

La Veranda is open from Friday to Tuesday, 7.00 pm to 11.30 pm (closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays), with live music from Friday to Sunday.

After more than 60 years of history, El Fuerte, Marbella’s iconic beachfront hotel, has been completely reimagined for a new century. Recently opened as a 5-star property, El Fuerte has a new rooftop, home to the destination restaurant Edge by award-winning Chef Paco Pérez.

With much anticipation, hotel El Fuerte Marbella re-opened this summer, 2023 with a completely new look, enhanced facilities, impressive interior design, and sparkling new pools.

What’s more the hotel’s culinary offering has also been upgraded in line with El Fuerte Marbella’s new 5-star positioning. The gastronomy is headlined by Edge, the new gastronomic restaurant that has opened on the hotel’s spectacular rooftop. Here’s our take on this innovative and elegant fine dining experience in Marbella.

Security greets you as you approach El Fuerte Marbella. Without a reservation, the chances are you will not be allowed in to have a look around. But with a restaurant reservation, you can pass and head into the swanky new lobby area that opens to the garden terrace with fabulous sea views.

To the right are the elevators that will whisk you up to the rooftop, where the friendly team at Edge will greet you.

Travelling Mediterranean cuisine

The concept of Edge restaurant is ‘cocina Mediterránea viajera’. Here the menu designed by Executive Chef Paco Pérez showcases Andalusian Mediterranean produce, with preparations that reflect the history of the area and influences from further afield that have impacted and evolved the cuisine.

This is a contemporary Mediterranean restaurant, with an easy-to-navigate menu of 22 dishes and 5 deserts that focus on the region.  Chef Perez, whose restaurants have been awarded a total of 4 Michelin stars, commented at the launch that his goal was to ‘offer creative Mediterranean cuisine, based mainly on the local area and its produce. Our aim is to try to bring to the table the culinary fusion that has been evolving in the Mediterranean for so many years.

This is the place to enjoy classic Andalusian dishes (like Iberian ham, as well as anchovies, prepared in imaginative ways), fresh seafood and fish, deep-fried dishes prepared at 180 degrees, (like the typical cod fritters of Andalusia) and premium produce prepared over fire, on the Josper grill.

Horizon views

The setting of the restaurant is standout. The dining room is like a large glass box – its glass curtains fold open so the whole rood terrace becomes one expansive space. Cocktail tables are to one side, the bar to the other.  A few sofas create cosy clusters for al fresco pre-dinner drinks, with views of Marbella town and the Sierra Blanca mountain range.

The dining tables face out to the Mediterranean and the horizon – one really feels as if you are sitting at the edge of the sea with a privileged perspective, with great views of the hotel gardens, leading out to the promenade with the sea beyond.

The menu is well-priced with plates starting at 15 euro and nothing more than 45 euro (the most expensive dish is a red curry with crayfish which have been prepared on the Josper grill).

The wine list has been designed by sommelier Meritxell Falgueras. The selection is modest but tempting with Spanish and international choices and very well priced. Wine by the glass from 6,50 euros for an Albariño. Meritxell is quoted as saying, ‘My aim is for the wine service to be the finishing touch to an exceptional meal. For El Fuerte Marbella I have selected the most powerful, intelligent, intense, courageous and brave wines in the world to create an original list, with classics from surprising vintages’.

The cocktail list has been designed by Cristian Pineda, with a desire to continue the storytelling of this restaurant, with a vision to take diners on a journey in which various cultures, aromas and flavours merge. From the Hispania of the days of the Roman Empire and the legacy left behind by that civilisation on the Iberian Peninsula, to tributes to various expressions of Andalusian art, such as the beginnings of flamenco or the birth of cubism with Picasso.

Fine Dining

The experience is most definitely gourmet.  Our meal began with tasty pre-starters of sardines and tartlets with tuna and garum, evocative of the historic cuisine of the coast.

If you want to have a real flavour of the south, you should order fried fish – it’s so good here. The classic deep-fried cod fritters ‘buñuelos de bacalao’ on this menu are given a lift with lemon & ginger – crispy on the outside and light and flavoursome inside.

The blue-fin tuna, from the fresh fish part of the menu, looked amazing with its oil and vegetable emulsion marbling. This is such a wonderful-looking dish.

The white prawn and avocado ceviche with elegant foam presentation is a winning summery, refreshing, flavoursome hit.

We couldn’t resist ordering from the Josper Grill., You see the chefs working over hot ambers by the kitchen and tempting aromas occasionally waft over during the meal. So, we went for the Moorish-style Doruc pork ribs – served off the bone –  a delectable balance of meat and fat.

The half lobster was also prepared on the charcoal Josper grill and served with noodles, and a seafood ‘Bolognese’ – with on point presentation.

Edge is a welcome addition to Marbella’s diverse dining scene.
