Pablo Picasso changed art for ever. An extraordinary innovator, constantly experimenting and creating, he has left an exceptional artistic legacy. He was born in Malaga, Southern Spain in 1881 and spent his early life in this sun-splashed Mediterranean city.
To mark the 50 anniversary of Picasso’s passing, Anantara Villa Padierna Palace, Marbella has created an extraordinary guest stay, ‘Luxury Retreat: A Palatial Stay Inspired by Picasso’ that celebrates the art, culture, and cuisine of his beloved Malaga province. Here The Luxury Editor shares with you the inside track on what to expect.

First impressions of the Anantara Villa Padierna Palace Marbella are impressive. It’s a palatial property, set in a golf valley, with views over the greens towards the sea. It is Anantara’s flagship resort in Southern Spain. Sheltered by majestic mountains, this Mediterranean resort of suites and villas (The Obama Villa once hosted the former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama) is close to some of the country’s most beautiful ‘white villages’, the prestigious town of Marbella, and the sparkling Mediterranean sea. Expect a compelling combination of European elegance with upscale gastronomy across multiple dining venues, as well as exceptional leisure facilities including a super-stylish beach & racquet club, an award-winning spa and championship golf courses.

Choosing the ‘Luxury Retreat: A Palatial Stay Inspired by Picasso’ is probably the finest way to experience much of what makes Anantara Villa Padierna so special. In addition to a stay in a palatial room, guests enjoy:

  • Return airport transfers from Malaga Airport
  • Picasso welcome amenities
  • Spa treatment at the Anantara Spa
  • Malaga Picasso tour experience
  • Exclusive Picasso Dining by Design experience for two

Check-in and suite

Arriving at the resort, and entering the lofty lobby of the Anantara Marbella, one’s experience truly begins. This magnificent light-filled atrium features seasonal floral masterpieces. We arrived in autumn, with the theme brought to life with warm blooms, richly textured leaves, and fruit.

Here check-in is a comfortable affair, seated in dappled sunlight, sipping fine cava, and enjoying a chocolate treat, fashioned as an olive, evocative of one of Andalucia’s most prized gourmet products, extra virgin olive oil.

The treats continue as one arrives at the suite, with welcome handmade chocolates presented an artist’s palette, and a limited edition print of a charming sketch of the Anantara Villa Padierna by renowned artist, Jorge Parra, with his personal homage to Picasso.

It’s a delightful, and unique gesture and sets the scene for this palatial stay inspired by Pablo Picasso. The suite makes us feel like VIPs, with its majestic decoration of sparkling crystal chandeliers, fine art, antiques, and French Windows that open to the lush gardens. It’s the perfect place to take a moment and relax.

Spa & Wellness

Seeking tranquillity and rejuvenation is reason enough to come to Anantara Villa Padierna, home to one of Spain’s most elegant spas, styled like classic baths, with a touch of Roman flair.

As part of this guest package, one can enjoy a signature spa massage. The treatment rooms are set apart from the pool and wet areas, so they are particularly peaceful. Expect a comfortable and wide treatment table, and experienced therapists.  The whole experience is world-class.

Gastronomy

Yet, the real reason I’m here is to be immersed in Picasso’s Malaga. This begins with the fine dining. There’s plenty of choice, with the Eastern Mediterranean delights of Óla Beirut, the Japanese refinement of 99 Sushi Bar & Restaurant, and the elegance of La Veranda.

You can read more about La Veranda’s classic dishes here.

Yet it is La Loggia that is calling with its celebration of local Andalucian and Spanish cuisine.  Here guests and visitors can experience a contemporary Spanish menu inspired by favourite dishes of Picasso, as well as local specialities. From a typical Malaga salad of cod and orange, a velvety ‘porra’ tomato, bread, and olive oil cream, to hearty fish balls.

This is sophisticated comfort food that truly reflects the destination and the way Picasso would have eaten in Spain.

Private Dining

The culinary highlight of the stay was our Dining by Design experience. Anantara’s private dining is extraordinary. Anantara Villa Padierna is a magical property, with so many special places to enjoy private dining from under the stars, to shaded terraces. In the autumn and winter, the elegant private salons make for a cosy and stylish venue.

The Picasso-inspired private dining is a delight, with a table setting evocative of the artist’s studio, with paint brushes and even small wooden pain paint palettes for the bread.

The dishes again reflect the heritage of Picasso’s southern Spain. A dedicated waiter achieved the perfect balance for us between attentive service and leaving us to enjoy each course in private – it was a dream.

Picasso’s Malaga

Malaga city has emerged as one of Southern Europe’s most dynamic cities, with a vibrant contemporary art scene, and a cultural wealth that includes the renowned Museo Picasso Málaga. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the museum has attracted international attention for its remarkable collections that tell the story of Picasso’s life and his impact on the world of art.

Anantara Villa Padierna can arrange a private guided tour of Malaga, Picasso’s birthplace. One is whisked to the regional capital in style, where a guide is awaiting us. Each tour can be personalised. Of course, it includes a visit to the Picasso Museum which is home to more than 230 of his works.

The museum’s permanent collection is arranged chronologically, showing the overlap of his personal life and relationships with his radical artistic innovation through his abstract works.

With a guide, his story and works really resonate, and inspire you to delve back into history to find out more.

Until the end of March 2024, the museum’s temporary exhibition, ‘The Echo of Picasso’ brings together contemporary works by artists inspired by Picasso, highlighting how his cultural impact continues to reverberate for generations. The works are in different groups, each with a Picasso original as the inspiration – a really cool exhibit.

We also returned to Picasso’s birthplace on Plaza de la Merced – here the Picasso Foundation at the Casa Natal de Picasso offers a more intimate perspective with insights regarding his early years in Malaga.

Amongst the sketches on show are 9 of the lithographs of ‘The Bull’, Picasso’s 1945 work which is a simple, easily grasped guide to abstraction.

The tour also includes a visit to Malaga’s magnificent Cathedral, as well as the charming church where Picasso was baptised.

Then the amazing Magala trip ends with a typical Malaga tapas dinner at the city’s most iconic tavern, Pimpi Restaurant. Here the young Picasso famously sketched Malaga’s ubiquitous pigeons and the bar restaurant is one of the most evocative locations in the old town.

Dining at Gecko Hotel

The restaurant has an intimate, stylish vibe – club like – overlooking the Migjorn beach.

The menu at Gecko Hotel and Beach Club immerses you in the joy of a Mediterranean summer, with classic starters like gazpacho or croquettes but also fresh flavours of red prawn and sea bass ceviche (glorious) or marinated scallops with mango and citrus.

There are salads and abundant seafood as well as fish prepared on Andalusian style ‘espetos’ on the beach front. Classis Spanish rice dishes, meet tempting international favourites like a gourmet burger the tastiest Caesar salad.

Formentera is renowned for being laid back and bohemian – here at Gecko Hotel one can find a slice of Riviera elegance that in tune with the island’s essence.

As they say, Gecko was created, ‘ for like-minded individuals to unwind, connect with oneself and nature and above all celebrate life.’

I have to admit that we couldn’t resist the opportunity to take a tour of the property before eating. Elegant, refined rooms with private plunge pools, with signature design touches like mosaics.

For your next Balearic blissful escapade take a look at Gecko Hotel. The chances are that the rooms might be fully booked, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a day visit experiencing the Beach Club, pool, gardens, wellness, and some memorable dining on the terrace.

Retreating to the country is a time-honoured way of restoring one’s spirits by relaxing amidst lush greenery, breathing fresher air, and letting nature perform its own form of healing. For me, I couldn’t think of a better place to enjoy this, and have radiant sunshine as well, than in the magnificent Mallorca countryside at luxury eco retreat LJs RATXÓ.

Set within a private valley and nature reserve, this luxurious boutique hotel can only be reached via a private track, providing guests with the perfect location for privacy and tranquillity, far away from the bustle of everyday life. Even during high season, here you will find the authentic Mallorca, a place of slow travel and slow living. Close to the sparkle of the coast and the translucent waters of the Balearic sea, yet worlds away, in a secluded, privileged haven of natural peace, where you will feel in true harmony with your surroundings.

The magic of LJs Ratxo:

It’s all in the details

It feels good to travel more responsibly with respect for the environment, but I still love my creature comforts and LJs Ratxo knows a thing or two about that. No sooner had I landed at Palma’s international airport, than I received a welcome Whatsapp greeting from General Manager Juan Carlos Gacal. As we entered the terminal we were met by the elegantly dressed agent for Transfer Class who were all set to whisk us through the countryside to the private estate of LJs Ratxo.

Arriving at the property feels magical. The quiet lane meanders through dense pine forest, and becomes increasingly rustic, as one enters the wildlife preserve, called Reserva Park, also owned by the property, which offers a multi-adventure outdoorsy experience here in the heart of the Tramuntana mountains.

After 20 minutes or so passing through wilderness, one arrives at LJs Ratxo, a historic Finca that has been restored and reimagined as a 25-room, 5-star retreat. The grounds are surrounded by wild nature yet are just the right side of manicured. Ancient, twisted olive trees, stand amongst palms and Mediterranean planting that runs down to a stream that runs through the property, the gentle sound of water filling the air.

Set amongst the trees are artworks by Joan Bennàsar, the renowned sculptor, bringing an elevated sense of sophistication to this natural enclave.

Welcome

You feel part of the family when you arrive, welcomed with warmth it’s a very meaningful greeting. Once shown to our delightful suite, our luggage was already there, the airline tags removed and in their place, leather LJs Ratxo tags had been added.

Beautiful details at LJs Ratxo:

Sustainability

This Eco Retreat also walks its talk by introducing a Green Traffic Light system where guests can explore the status of the retreat’s sustainability projects. Those completed include the use of umbrellas with solar panels to illuminate the restaurant, reusing wood from the environment to make decorative pieces and the maximum use of local products in the bar and restaurant menus. They are also working on sourcing and cultivating plants endemic to the area, adding more renewable energy sources, and using hybrid or electric vehicles for guest transport.

Design and Amenities

Surrounded by the lushly forested slopes of the valley, LJs RATXÓ conveys a sense of harmony with its natural surroundings. Guests can relax by the outdoor pool with Jacuzzi, or in cooler months enjoy the heated indoor pool with solarium in the elegant spa. Complimentary yoga classes are available, and if guests are new to yoga, they can request a test class to see if it is a practice they might enjoy. And to assist guests with reconnecting to nature at LJs RATXÓ, its Natur-All Organic Spa offers a new concept in wellness. The comprehensive spa menu offers a  range of massage styles from around the world, including Ayurveda and Shiatsu, tailor-made rituals, a traditional hammam, aromatherapy and beauty treatments that include oxygen facials, Asian manicures, and pedicures, as well as hairdressing and makeup services. Elena the spa manager is relaxed and friendly and will create a personalised experience for guests.

Spa set amongst nature at LJs Ratxo:

Rooms

It has 25 rooms across six categories ranging from a Superior room to Royal Suite. All rooms are styled in a soothing mix of neutral hues, cool stone flooring and one-of-a-kind furniture pieces carved from sustainable timber to create a boho-chic vibe blended with Mallorca countryside charm throughout.

I adored the stone-built property. Our room was on the first floor, with a balcony that was in the canopy of the trees. Welcome details included organic grooming amenities in a cotton bag including after-sun and even locally produced fragrances. A chic gesture of French champagne offered in an artisan terracotta wine cooler was a lovely indulgence.

An elegant guest suite at LJs Ratxo:

Gastronomy

Under the expert guidance of chef Maria Salinas, the kitchen at LJs RATXÓ produces a succession of delicious dishes with the accent on organic, including vegetarian and vegan options. Not only is all the produce locally grown, but much of it is also from the retreat’s on-site kitchen garden. During summer, the spacious outdoor terrace forms the gastronomic heart of LJs RATXÓ, while the indoor Roots restaurant is used during the cooler months and is synonymous with sophistication.

The gourmet breakfast at LJs Ratxo:

The cuisine was grounded, local and unfussy, yet still had a level of sophistication of fine dining. Each day we enjoyed surprises and seasonal treats that made you feel connected with the destination.

Al fresco lunch a LJs Ratxo:

And when cocktails are called for, the Ginebró bar offers guests a cosy and warm ambience to enjoy a Mallorca Mojito. Guests can also order from a room service menu on those occasions when more privacy is desired.

Dinner at LJs Ratxo, including their won label wines:

Unique Experiences

It was an unforgettable experience to be invited to have a tree on the LJs Ratxo estate names after me! You can be part of this sustainable project by following the progress in restrung and enhancing the local environment and as a gesture of this, I had an olive tree named after me.

Connecting with the destination at LJs Ratxo:

I adore nature, and it was such a  special morning to spend with the local guide who took us through the Reserva Park that encompasses LJs Ratxo, seeing the local flora and fauna and understanding more about their conservation work and care of animals.

Esploring the Reserva Park, natural animal preserve at LJs Ratxo:

Final Thoughts

Mindful, meditative, and magnificent. Staying in this wondrous natural valley, ensconced in refined comfort and style was a genuine treat. Dispel any misconceptions about Mallorca as a busy island. This Balearic beauty is rich in flora and fauna and has so many tranquil corners, and LJs Ratxo must surely be amongst the finest.

New to the Costa del Sol, the SO/ Spa Heath Club Sotogrande brings a new level of refinement and style to wellness in Southern Spain.

Reception at SO/ Spa Health Club Sotogrande

I returned to SO/ Sotogrande to visit the recently opened SO/ Spa Health Club. This striking new building that appears to seamless blend with the landscape, thanks to its living roof. Inside this modern, clean architectural lines are softened with arches, traditional materials, and surprising murals that catch the eye.

SO/ Sotogrande, an upscale resort in the elite enclave of Sotogrande takes a holistic approach to sharing the best of the Andalucian luxury lifestyle. Here is a harmonious integration of the past with the vibrancy of the present, and healthy balance between refined indulgence and luxurious wellness, writes Andrew Forbes (The Luxury Editor).

There are two areas: SO/ FIT and SO/ SPA.

25 Metre Lap Pool

8 Treatment Suites

Beauty Salon Suite

Hammam Suite

Recovery Zone

Luxury Changing Rooms

Flotation Experience

Cryotherapy

Hydrotherapy

Hot & Cold Plunge pools

Sauna & Steam Room

Yoga & Relaxation Pavilion

SO/ FIT is a is a comprehensive fitness centre that is executed with avant-garde flair. Open 24/7, the spaces are equipped with the very latest in fitness equipment and complemented by classes and personal trainers.

The 20 metre indoor saltwater pool is part of an impressive aquatonic wet space including thermal and hydro pools, and hot tubs that connect the inside with the outside terrace and garden with views to the golf course and Mediterranean.

SO/ SPA is the sparkling new sanctuary to health and wellbeing. Guests are greeted and offered an herbal infusion in the eclectic yet calming reception. Then it’s on to the luxury changing areas, beautifully equipped with everything you need.

Your spa therapist will meet you and take you to the private treatment rooms. Each of these architectural statements are a private oasis of zen tranquillity. Here curated, signature treatments with the expected SO/ playful twist are provided by trained therapists; and all with views of the golf course and countryside.

The treatment rooms are probably the best I have seen – double height spaces, filled with natural light and very well sound-proofed. The massage beds are wide, perfectly prepared with soft heated mattress, and the little details that count like the dish of flowers floating in water below the head rest.

Additional spa services include cryotherapy and flotation.

This is quite a spectacular spa.

Also, I am told that salon services including on-trend cosmetology, can be experienced in the health club or in the guest rooms and suites.

A historic manor house estate, enchanting surroundings, authentic hospitality, and fine, local gastronomy are what guests can look forward to, at rural hotel C’an Beneït

This is my favourite time to visit the Balearics; the start of autumn, when the heat gives way to clear skies and fresh, invigorating air. It’s the perfect season to leave behind the beaches and head inland for hiking, cycling, and relaxation amongst nature.

The destination? It’s an easy choice; the captivating rural charm of C’an Beneït ‘agroturisme’ country hotel, lying at the foothills of the UNESCO Tramuntana mountains, home to Mirabona Restaurant.

Country Charm

Once you arrive, you won’t want to leave this boutique property. It embraces you with Mediterranean warmth, and the calm of an unspoilt landscape. Expect a mountain view pool with daybed bar service; a 0km restaurant, stylish guest rooms and suites, and mesmerising views to mountains on one side, and on the other, vistas over the island towards the Mediterranean.

The verdant landscape is of cypress, olive, and carob trees – crisscrossed by ancient drystone walls and punctuated with ochre and honey-coloured medieval hilltop villages. It is a real delight!

C’an Beneït means the blessed place – and as a guest one certainly feels very fortunate and favoured to be in this beautiful environment. Sitting on the terrace sipping the hotel’s signature Mediterranean rosemary Gimlet, shortly after my arrival, I realised that C’an Beneït was special.

Throughout the seasons guests can enjoy memorable, authentic experiences, from tasting local wines in the private wine cellar, cultural events & intimate concerts hosted within the historic courtyards, olive oil tasting in the ancient mill, and wellbeing retreats.

The property is full of rural charm – an historic farmstead with 10 guest rooms, each with their own style thanks to the architecture of the estate.

There’s an original olive oil mill too; and during my recent stay I found the estate’s quaint little chapel. It was actually beside my suite, behind weather worn doors with a romantic patina that reflected a rich history. The modest bell tower was the only clue of what was within.

Mirabona Restaurant

The Mirabona restaurant, with indoor dining and outdoor seating on a vine-shaded terrace, is the destination for locals as well as guests for 0km cuisine, using lots of organic ingredients including fruit and veg from the finca.

Here’s guests can enjoy the hotel’s signature breakfasts.

For autumn there’s a new menu and the restaurant star dishes have been given a seasonal touch.

Hotel Comforts

Toni and his team have retained the laid back appeal of this ‘agroturisme’ yet brought all the attention to detail and mastery of hospitality that he’s acquired from working with some of Mallorca’s most refined properties.

It’s a winning combination – I felt relaxed in the countryside, in a homey place with a friendly team but pampered by the little luxuries in the room like fine linens, fluffy towels, luxury bathrobes by ‘Spirit’ of Nomad’, and upscale L’Occitane amenities. Our suite was a thoughtfully prepared, with a fruit basket including produce from the estate.

It’s a country place but you can still expect an evening turndown executed with flair. The suite had a Nespresso coffee machine, kettle as well as unlimited filtered bottled water. The mini bar was included in the room rate, and stocked with refreshments, beers, and chilled water in lightweight reusable bottles perfect for taking on a hike.

Mallorca Magic

Agro-tourism has a long history in the Balearic rural tourism where guests stay in traditional farmsteads. The buildings are converted into comfortable B&Bs and boutique hotels, yet the estates continue to operate as rural businesses with olive groves, carob groves, sheep, goats etc. It’s a way of both maintaining a traditional organic agriculture whilst offering visitors the chance to be immersed in rural island life, enjoying simple pleasures of tranquillity and seclusion.

At C’an Beneït that rustic charm has been elevated with the luxuries of wonderful cuisine, stylish accommodation, and warm hospitality.

You may recall that towards the end of last year I featured a spotlight on this rural Balearic retreat, created by Mallorca hospitality expert Toni Duran. The leap of faith to open C’an Beneï during the height of the pandemic, is paying off. Together with his partner, Toni has a very special rural hotel that has emerged as a highly desirable Mallorca destination.

Built during the 18th century, at apex of Mallorca’s golden age of trade and influence, the magnificent Palacio Can Marques is now an all-suite contemporary boutique hotel, resonating with history and modern design flair.

Palacio Can Marques is a genuinely luxurious hotel, with individually designed suites, a gym and also a destination restaurant, The Merchants, an upscale Steak and Grill Restaurant with tables set amongst the romantic sub-tropical courtyard garden.

Boutique Bliss

The hotel’s website teases visitors with the phrase, ‘Why stay in a hotel when you can live in a Palace’. Well, when you arrive at Palacio Can Marques, you truly understand these sentiments.

The narrow streets of Palma’s honey-coloured old town are lined with the high walls of discreet period building and unassuming arched doorways. Yet behind one of these arches, one finds a resplendent patio, once for footman, horses, and carriages. Now it’s a wow-factor lobby. This covered courtyard is a sumptuous space, with lobby bar, seating, and an extraordinary, fairy-tale inverted imperial staircase.

The impressive entrance courtyard of Palacio Can Marques

Mallorca’s strategic position in the Mediterranean and its history of merchants and trade has left a remarkable cultural and architectural heritage. Palma’s old town has been restored over the past couple of decades and is now home to chic hideaways and boutique hotels.

Palma’s Old Town & Cathedral

Yet few can compare to Palacio Can Marques in terms of visual impact.

Yet this striking mansion isn’t just relying on its good looks to get by – the team equally impress with a generous welcome and thoughtful attentiveness during the stay.

Facilities include a restaurant, The Merchants; a gym; and also a tie-in with Puro Beach giving guests access to the islands prestigious beach clubs.

Close to beach clubs and the coast

Sensational Suites

Climbing the glorious staircase builds anticipation for the guest room. Well, here each is suite, with its own style and ambiance. But expect extravagant dimensions, and bold interiors.  Signature details include bespoke crystal chandeliers made in Murano, that although strikingly contemporary, are evocative of the noble past of this aristocratic property.

Although the property has completely remodelled, there are still original features like the wonderful old pine doors of the rooms, floor tiles and fireplaces – each being an inspiration for the diverse designs of each suite, from elegance of the Cathedral Superior suite  to the exotic 300 sq. metre North African Riad penthouse said to be the largest suite in Palma!

We stayed in the Cathedral suite – aptly named when one considers the lofty dimensions of the living room and bedroom, which rise some 6 metres. It’s a calming space with a muted, soothing palette.

The creativity throughout the Palacio Can Marques is the work of renowned designer Aline Matsika, who maintains offices in Paris, New York, and Hamburg. She is the vision behind the eclectic furniture, rugs and artisan materials used, as well as curator of the artwork and paintings sourced from shows and galleries across the world.

This has been a truly personal project for Aline, as she is the partner to the owner, Kim Schindelhauer who bought the property from the Marques family, who had been custodians of this architectural jewel since 1860,  when Antonio Marques, the first mayor of the city of Palma, acquired it. Schindelhauer is German businessman and owner of the 33-metre Baltic racing yacht WinWin.

Spaces are decorated with artefacts and artwork from across the world, reflecting Schindelhauer’s nautical travels. Although this mansion is tucked away in the old town, the water is just a few hundred metres away, and from the terraces of the Riad penthouse one can take in a view of the marina and the yachts.

Centuries before of course, the boats would have been very different – trading vessels that brought wealth to the Islands.

The Merchants

Antonio Massa, who built this mansion, was a captain, consul of Merchants, consul of the Order of Malta, priest, guardian of the cathedral and a senior official of Palma. Worthy inspiration for The Merchants restaurant.

The Merchants Steak & Grill Restaurant, although in name is a reminder of this property’s maritime past, is very much a contemporary place. With cuisine by Chef Stephen Sullivan, The Merchants is a modern steakhouse and seafood restaurant open from breakfast to dinner, with indoor dining on the hotel’s ground floor, as well as outdoor tables set amongst the palms of the secret patio garden of Palacio Can Marques and during the weekends on the rooftop terrace.

Menu includes seafood from rock oysters to lobster, and prime cuts including Wagyu.

It all adds up to a deliciously stylish stay in Palma.

Soho is the creative nexus of the Mediterranean city of Malaga, and at the heart of this artsy city-centre neighbourhood is the Icon Malabar, a 4-star boutique hotel with style flair and a playful sense of creativity

Icon Hotels is a new brand, combining unparalleled locations with flexible accommodation options, accessible prices and the sparkle of luxury and refinement.

Icon Malabar Malaga is a flagship property, 70 rooms in a classic building in the vibrant Soho quarter, just a block away from the new Antonio Banderas Theatre, and minutes to the city’s Contemporary Art Centre.

General Manager Rebecca Evans has a superb team, providing a genuine welcome and friendly attentive service. The hotel finds the right balance between being relaxed as you would expect in the Soho, but also professional reflecting the 4 star category of the property.

Destination Malaga

Ask insiders and tastemakers about what’s the city to watch in Spain, and Malaga will surely be at the top of their list. Over the last 15 years this port city has emerged as the destination of choice for culture, cuisine, and authenticity. Add in probably the best climate in Europe, and the friendliest folk in Iberia and you can begin to appreciate the appeal.

Icon Malabar is the sophisticated choice for the trendy Soho neighbourhood. Here you experience the authenticity of Malaga’s creative culture, the warmth of its people and the convenience of being in the centre of the city. Soho is the city arts quarter, a hub for independent studios, galleries as well as street art.

The newly remodelled Alameda Boulevard, a major focus for Easter celebrations, is a few minutes’ walk away, as is the elegant and fashionable Calle Larios. Restaurants, tapas bars, and the city’s world-class galleries, from the Pompidou to the Picasso Museum, are all there to be explored.

Icon Malabar

Southern Spain is blessed with an extraordinary climate, and an abundance of sunshine. So light floods the public spaces and guest rooms of Icon Malabar. This more than century-old architectural building has classical, evocative features that have been restored and brought into the 21st century with a thoughtful, contemporary remodelling.

The modern interiors reflect the international history of this maritime city, with on-trend interior design that conveys influences from the Americas as well as al Andalus. The feeling is of space and light. Natural materials, blond woods, warm fabrics in gold and green, with pops of colour create a welcoming, open ambiance. Floors are have bold mid-century patterns or subtle textures of wood. Lush, architectural sub-tropical pot plants, and hard wood vintage style ceiling fans add a touch of colonial charm.

Guest Rooms & Suites

Flexibility is the style at Icon Malabar, with a mix of stylish suites, deluxe double rooms with balconies, as well as ingenious quadruple rooms, with sofa bed and bunk beds, ideal for young families or friends that want to stay together for a smart city break.

All rooms have smart TVs, Wi-Fi, high quality king size beds and linens, and sparkling bathrooms with large showers (the suites have bathtubs too). Robes, slippers and Molton Brown amenities are all there too.

Playful elements include tongue-in-cheek artwork, and the thoughtful touches include a welcome gift of local Malaga wine.

I particularly liked that the rooms are very well sound-proofed and have black out curtains or shutters. I slept very well!

Terrace Bar

Icon Malabar has a terrace bar, that also serves a menu of light snacks and salads. In addition, a comprehensive and well-presented breakfast is offered each morning.

Facilities

Additional benefits include use of the hotel bikes to explore the city.

SO/ Sotogrande is the upscale resort with a one-of-a-kind personality in Southern Spain. It promises to be unmistakably playful, offering a creative, audacious, and contemporary interpretation of luxury hospitality, all set within Sotogrande, the exclusive lifestyle destination in Southern Spain.

A stylish, design-driven resort, SO/ Sotogrande endeavours to introduce guests to new ways of enjoying Andalucía and its culture, through gastronomy, design, fun, and fashion. I checked-in within the first few days of the much-anticipated opening.

This is first property in Spain from SO/ Hotels & Resorts; and this is what I discovered, writes Andrew Forbes (The Luxury Editor).

SO/ Sotogrande brings some much needed flair and personality to the discreet and private luxury destination of Sotogrande. The resort aims to bring together the essence and vibe of Andalucia with the flair and soul of the hotel, which has been a labour of love for architects, designers, artists, and artisans. Everywhere you look you see evidence of thoughtful, creative, and fun design.

The resort is also a tempting new hub for bars and restaurants including IXO, the tapas cocktail bar; EL CORTIJO, a contemporary Spanish restaurant; MARXO, an outdoor terrace restaurant with custom wood-burning grill; and also, SOCIAL-CLUB, the elegant café bar in the adjacent golf club house. During high season guests can also opt for an all-inclusive package.

In addition to the dining options, SO/ Sotogrande offers a sophisticated wellness and spa centre open to visitors as well as guests.

Location

Sotogrande is a high-end, planned lifestyle community on the very western edge of the Costa del Sol, 30 minutes’ drive from Gibraltar and about 45 minutes’ drive from Marbella. It’s a chic, luxurious destination, set between quiet beaches and countryside of olive groves & oak forests. Development is predominantly upscale villas. Residents and visitors have access to elite facilities such as the famous golf courses of Valderrama, and La Reserva Golf and Country Club, an exclusive ‘inland inland beach club, complete with magnificent, manmade freshwater sandy lagoon, and Sotogrande’s prestigious Santa Maria polo club. What Sotogrande didn’t have ‘till now was a truly 5 star hotel. So that’s why I was SO excited to visit SO/ Sotogrande:-)

Check-In

The elegant check-in at SO/ Sotogrande sets the scene for a stylish guest experience. Leaving the car for the valet, one is invited into the Arrivals Pavilion, a strikingly modern light-filled, double-height open space that blurs the boundaries between exterior and interior. Contemporary glass walls, huge glass pivoting doors, and a unique custom build terracotta lattice screen design define the area. Uniformed staff, wearing bespoke designs by fashion designer Dolores Cortes, greet you and invite you to take a seat. I was also met by the SO/ Guru – the hotel’s host and concierge.

Arrivals Pavilion at So/ Sotogrande (Photography featured © @andrewaforbes)

Seated on the luxurious S-shaped sofa, sipping a mimosa while waiting for my room keys to be prepared, I looked up and saw an exquisite, sculptural light installation of a flock of birds in mid-flight over the entrance – a beautiful reminder that this area is renowned for migratory birds that pass between Europe and Africa, visible on the horizon.

From the Arrivals Pavilion the gardens, punctuated by water features and sub-tropical plants, lead out to the guest cottages and social areas. In the height of summer it’s a good idea to take advantage of the guest transfers in the golf buggies!

Revolutionized Cortijo

At the heart of SO/Sotogrande is the ‘Revolutionized Cortijo’. After we’d settled into the suite, this is where we headed to have a cocktail and dinner. It looks set to be the place where guests and local visitors from Sotogrande can mingle and socialise.

Originally the historic Santa Maria de la Higuera, a typical Andalucian country house with land over-looking the Mediterranean, it has been transformed in signature SO/ style into the gastronomic and social heart of the resort.

The reimagined cortijo, at the heart of SO/ Sotogrande

Gastronomy

SO/ Sotogrande brings together a choice of places to enjoy the flavours of Spain, the Mediterranean, and beyond,

IXO is at the centre of the Revolutionized Cortijo, within the original central patio. Service is throughout the day, from a morning coffee, to evening cocktails. The bar sits right where the original patio courtyard was, with cool seating areas around it, that spill out onto a terrace shaded by mulberry trees.

Then, take the staircase up to the restaurant level. As you climb, you’ll notice that the classic Spanish hand fan has been captured in the sculptural chandelier of crystal fans that appear to cascade down through the spiralling staircase that leads from IXO up to El Cortijo.

El Cortijo is the gastronomic soul of the hotel resort, a Mediterranean restaurant with an elegant, contemporary simplicity. This is where we enjoyed breakfast each morning, with a choice of small plates freshly prepared in the buffet area, complemented by a la carte hot dishes.

There’s also ‘jamón bodega’ where Spanish ham tastings are planned. Again, here design features echo the destination – classic ‘botijo’ clay water jugs of Andalucía are referenced in the modern rustic charm of the terracotta lamps in the restaurant.

In the evening the ambiance changes. Dinner is on the subtlety lit terraces with views out across the property, the Sotogrande countryside to the Mediterranean.

Our dinner was evocative of the traditional Spanish kitchen, with dishes like salmorejo and local Atlantic almadraba tuna, yet the presentation, and service was contemporary and refined. Our server was elegant and knowledgeable and paired our dishes with local and national Spanish wines. There were design touches that elevated the experience, like the mineral water served in bespoke aluminium bottles that sported the SO/ Sotogrande emblem created by fashion designer Dolores Cortes.

MARXO is the other side of the signature swimming pool. An alfresco restaurant that plays homage to the lively international chiringuito; with tables set on shaded poolside terraces with sea views. This is the place for relaxing aperitifs and local dishes that celebrate the season.

During our lunch, Executive Chef Leandro Cabellero was at the magnificent custom-made 5-metre long wood burning grill preparing grilled fish, seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes like the delicious cauliflower ‘steaks’.

Gardens & Pools

Garden designer Rocío Sainz de Rozas has created densely planted, meandering gardens that unite the old and new architecture. These bold natural spaces are abundant with sub-tropical, architectural planting.

There is a main adults pool with sea and countryside views. Set further back, is a secluded family pool; whilst on a lower terrace is a quiet, meditative garden with designer sun loungers and a large tranquillity pool.

Spa & Wellness

The Wellness centre is set below this garden and appears to seamless blend with the landscape, thanks to its living roof. Although the spa was not open during my stay, I did have a tour, to see inside this modern, innovative space. Set to open late summer 2021, guests will find a pool, thermal circuit, and treatment rooms, each an architectural statement, a private oasis of zen tranquillity. Design motifs, traditional materials, and artistic touches combine with clean architectural lines to create a calming space.

SO FIT at SO/ Sotogrande (render from SO/ Hotels)

SO Lofty suites

Guest rooms and suites are positioned around the landscaped property in cottages and contemporary lofts. I stayed in one of the newly constructed SO LOFTY suites.

These contemporary loft rooms have a living space with sliding doors onto a private terrace, a master bedroom with doors onto a garden, and huge bathroom with sunken tub and outside private terrace.

Arch motifs run throughout the design, echoing the classic arches in the cortijo. There are custom art canvases by Dolores Cortes, designer rugs, and artisan ceramics.

There are lots of thoughtful design touches, from the leather note pad, the bespoke room key cards and the leather coasters.

SO/ Hotels & Resorts

SO/ was first conceived a decade ago, a notion developed from the ideas of Design, Playfulness and Fashion. It has since evolved into a distinctive hotel brand that is the epitome of rebellious luxury, a new kind of upscale hospitality. Having opened the first SO/ property in Mauritius, there are now projects extending across the world.

Each of the Balearic islands has its own captivating identity, and Ibiza is an island that sparkles with a seductive mix of boho chic, club vibrancy and high end luxury.  Nobu Ibiza Bay Hotel, close to Ibiza Town, is the lifestyle resort that promises you a little of everything from Nobu fine-dining, poolside cocktails, Balearic beats as well as curated, nurturing wellness experiences.

You can read The Luxury Editor profile review of Nobu Marbella Hotel here.

Concierge is eager to share the beauty of their island with you. BEyond Ibiza Bay includes an enticing selection of curated experiences from wine tasting at the island’s boutique wineries, hiking with the hotel’s guide, Manuel; to taking a spin in a Mustang.

Chambao

We started our Ibiza days as the all-day boho beachside chiringuito Chambao. Fresh deliciousness including handmade juices, and smoothies, local and exotic fruit, pastries, cold cuts, local and internationally cheeses, and elegantly prepared hot dishes. What a great way to wake up. Shaded by parasols, toes in the sand – perfect

Beach & Poolside Bliss

Holidays are about taking it easy, and Nobu Ibiza Bay has created some stunning areas to kick back and chill. The family pool is equally impressive as the adults’ pool – both with daybeds and loungers, and the attentive service of the team – the cocktails include light creations ideal for day drinking. The best thing? You can order lunch from Nobu and have it delivered to your sunbed. How indulgent is that?

Irasshaimase

The absolute highlight of our stay was a meal at Nobu Restaurant Ibiza.  It was outstanding. Head Chef Giacomo Notarbartolo has created a unique Nobu experience adding some truly original and delectable dishes to the Nobu menu. Each dish celebrates not only the unique style we love from Nobu but also the exceptional local produce from Ibiza, including world-class seafood. Open for lunch and dinner, as well as Brunch during the weekends.

You can read more about Nobu Restaurant Ibiza here.

Say BiBo

Michelin star chef Dani Garcia has brought his famous BiBo restaurant to  for the summer. The new Say BiBo pop-up offers iconic dishes from the BiBo menu, such as the whole fried marinated sea bass. Also, new, and exclusive to BiBo Ibiza Bay is a menu of tapas dishes with a Mexican influence, co-designed by Chef Abril Chamorra including freshly caught Red Shrimp Aguachile. The BiBo Ibiza Bay menu guarantees bold, new flavour pairings, inspired by Garcia’s international travels.

I was bowled over by the quality of the menu. What’s more the setting, on the terrace overlooking the bay is superb, the service excellent. Expect fresh, bold dishes that really impress.

Wellness & Beyond

More than ever, we are taking our health seriously. We may want to indulge a little on holiday, but that doesn’t mean we can’t nurture ourselves too. From yoga, complimentary workouts, to private gym trainers, Nobu Ibiza Bay has what it takes to keep you keeping your best. The island is also stunning, with wonderful hiking routes through pine forests and by hidden coves that you can discover and explore with the hotel’s guide.

In addition, Nobu Ibiza Bay has teamed up with Formentera’s Gecko Hotel and Beach Club, both members of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, to offer travellers an exclusive experience to discover the very best of both islands. The package allows guests to immerse themselves in two of the Mediterranean’s most sought-after destinations with luxury eco-friendly transfers in-between.

Recharge

Guest rooms and suites have an alluring Mediterranean style, with beautiful use of natural materials and luxurious details. The hotel boasts some exceptional suites including garden suites with private plunge pools, to rooftop duplexes.

Standard rooms are compact, but still have the Nobu style you’ll love.

Ibizan Memories

Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay has a delightful boutique, Almacen De Ibiza, with selected items that will remind you of your stay, from local gastronomic products to crafts.
