Rusacks St Andrews presents a captivating tale of history and elegance that could fill the pages of a library. Established in 1887 by German émigré Johann Kristof Wilhelm Rusack, this distinguished property earned its esteemed reputation as Scotland’s finest hotel, largely owing to its strategic location just a stone’s throw from the 18th hole of the Old Course. Following a meticulous restoration by hotel group Marine and Lawn the property now exudes decadence whilst seamlessly weaving in St Andrews’ rich golfing heritage. Three wonderful dining venues grace the premises, including standout rooftop restaurant Number 18 which offers breathtaking views across the Old Course and The Bridge, inspired by the Mediterranean, on the ground floor. The Luxury Editor was kindly invited along to dine at the hotel’s The Bridge.

The Marine & Lawn Hotel group welcomes visitors from across the globe to the birthplace of golf, with its properties in prime locations adjacent to the world’s most prestigious golf courses weaving the legends of centuries of golf history into design details throughout each hotel. The first two properties in the collection, Rusacks St Andrews and Marine North Berwick, launched in September 2021. Marine Troon opened in June 2022 along the Ayrshire Coast with the Slieve Donard Resort & Spa and Dornoch Station and the Adelphi Portrush Hotel in Portrush, Northern Ireland, all in the process of being completed for opening too.

Rusacks itself is stunning with grand stand-out interior design that fits the period property perfectly and Marine and Lawn’s American roots mean diners receive a very warm welcome on arrival, unlike some hotels where you sometimes feel slightly out of place unless you are staying in the property. Russacks couldn’t be further from this so feel free to wander around the communal areas as you explore the hotel.

Once you step inside the lobby there is a real wow factor, which was further enhanced by Christmas decorations being put up. I actually went back the next day to see the finished results – which were beautiful!

The occasion marked my dad’s birthday celebration and this was to be the ultimate destination to enjoy lunch for a golf lover – with a table looking out towards the 18th hole of the Old Course. What a view!

We started our lunch with a drink in No. 18 which is located on the top floor, the space steals the spotlight with its panoramic views across the 18th hole, and here guests can dine, have a cocktail, and relish the finest view in St Andrews.

With a menu designed by Derek Johnstone, a former MasterChef champion and Roux scholar with ties to Le Gavroche, the menu boasts the very best seasonal and locally sourced Scottish beef, seafood, and game that complements the handsomely designed setting perfectly.

After our aperitif we went down to the ground floor to The Bridge, this bright, white-walled brasserie exudes a Southern meets the Hamptons charm. Adorned with cane chairs, marble tabletops, brass fixtures, and cabana-striped banquettes. Along the walls is a who is who of golfing legends and every view from the restaurant is a show stopper, looking out to either the clubhouse or across to the Swilcan Bridge, you will fail to not be impressed.

This space, overseen by Johnstone’s team, offers a relaxed yet equally brilliant culinary experience to No. 18, in March this year the all-day dining offering changed from a British focus to a Mediterranean focus inspired by the coastal landscapes of France and Italy, as well as the charming villages and majestic mountains of Spain, Greece, the Adriatic, and the Levant.

Paying tribute to the rich and diverse flavours of Mediterranean cuisine their wood-fired ovens craft sourdough pizzas and homemade bread while hand-rolled pasta takes centre stage along with their charcoal grill transforming locally sourced meats and fish into mouthwatering dishes.

To start we chose Burrata, served with courgette and mint. The trio of dips and flatbread and the Mussles Mariana. The Burrata was incredible, cutting it open it oozed out and required a spoon to finish it off, paired with the mint and shredded courgette added a fresh element to the richness of the cheese.

The trio of dips was so good we kept them on to go with the pizza and the muscles were some of the best my mother had tried, so I can’t ask for better feedback than that!

For the main course (I am young at heart!!) so I can’t resist a pizza. The Bridges pizzas are made freshly using a sourdough base. I chose The Forager (as did my dad) this is a tomato-less base, instead using a creme di fungi paste which was generously pilled up with ricotta, more mushrooms for good measure, and finished with rocket and a drizzle of truffle oil to add further richness. While my mum had the Scottish Mushroom Tortellini, another rich dish with plum tortellini pasta bursting with flavour paired with truffle butter sauce.  Both were delicious.

Read our guide to the best hotels in St Andrews

After we finished our main courses we announced we could eat no more – but then the dessert menu was presented and we simply couldn’t resist! We chose the Torta Caprese, this indulgent pudding that almost had a biscuit-like texture to it is made with hazelnuts and dark chocolate and finished with a rich custard/cream sauce.

Our lunch at the Bridge turned a Birthday celebration into a wonderful day, the atmosphere was relaxed, the service was polished and incredibly friendly, the food was a delight, and we loved it! If you are planning a visit to St Andrew’s we highly recommend dining at Rusacks Hotel.

Set within 365 acres of stunning Perthshire countryside Murrayshall Country House Hotel & Golf Club offers a luxurious 4 star country house experience which is convenient to get to from all major Scottish cities and just three miles from the city of Perth. Forty elegant and spacious guest rooms and suites, a fabulous brasserie, club house bar and grill and two fantastic golf courses make this the ideal hotel for all golf fans. The Luxury Editor recently visited this property. Read on to find out what we thought of it.

Background And Concept

Originally built in 1664, Murrayshall House was initially owned by Sir Andrew Murray, and the direct descendants of this family, the Earls of Mansfield, still occupy Scone Palace just down the road. The house was modernised in the 18th century and again in 1864 and continued to change hands up till 1973 when it was transformed into the luxury hotel it is today.

Location

You really can escape from it all here, 365 acres of countryside and two golf courses surround the hotel. It’s easy to reach from all major Scottish cities (it took us one hour door to do from Edinburgh). Perth is three miles away and transfers and car hire are available from all Scottish Airports and major train stations, which can be arranged in advance by the hotel.

Rooms & Suites

The hotel has 40 guest rooms across the original house and modern extension. Rooms start with their newly refurbished ‘classic’ Murrayhall Rooms, through to their Superior Rooms in the main house with views over the estate and gardens. If you are looking for even more space their Deluxe rooms offer original features and high ceilings.

All rooms are tastefully designed and well equipped with TV, telephone, complimentary Wi-Fi, tea and coffee making facilities, plus complimentary mineral water and shortbread. Every bedroom also includes high-quality linen and a well-appointed bathroom with Scottish Fine Soaps products.

Coming as a family? Then their family suites are the ideal choice offering plenty of space for parents and kids and even your furry friends too!

Finally their best room in the house; the Miller Suite which has views over the estate and the beautiful Perthshire countryside. This bright and spacious suite features a four-poster bed, open plan living area, dressing room, and en-suite bathroom.

Food & Drink

Two dining experiences offer plenty of food options during your stay, the Lynedoch Brasserie offers a relaxed chic dining experience, while Stutts Bar & Grill serves lighter bites and gastropub options, which are ideal pre and post a round of golf.

Lynedoch Brasserie

The Lynedoch Brasserie is located in the main house and looks out across the Murrayshall course. Start the evening with a drink in the Lynedock Lounge before moving onto the brasserie for an evening meal.

Dinner

The menu offers a fantastic range of classic Scottish & British favourites with ingredients sourced locally, smoked salmon comes from George Campbell, tomatoes from the Isle of Wight, scallops from Andy Duncan, pork from Carnoustie, the list of local suppliers goes on and on. See menu here.

Breakfast

Breakfast is served in the Lynedoch Brasserie and again uses a wealth of high-quality local and British ingredients. There is no buffet, instead meals are ordered and served to your table and they can be tailored if you have any food allergies.

Stutts Clubhouse Bar & Grill

Stutts Clubhouse & Grill which connects with the hotel and leads you out to the Pro Shop and two golf courses offers a casual high-quality dining experience. Serving a menu of gastropub options and views across the Strathmore Hills you can take a seat inside around the log fire in the colder month or outside in the warmer months in their alfresco courtyard.

Golf

If you enjoy golf you have come to the right place as the hotel has not one but two courses to experience, a fully stocked pro shop (equipment from leading brands, including Titleist, Cobra and Srixon), driving range and putting greens as well as expert PGA tuition on hand which means you can turn a stay here into a complete golf break.

Electric buggies and golf bag trollies can also be booked for an additional fee.

Murrayshall Course

The Murrayshall Course is an 18 hole championship parkland course which meanders its way around the countryside estate, passing by wetlands, and pine trees, and offers golfers the perfect combination of an enthralling layout, impeccable course conditions, and stunning panoramic views.

Take a tour of the Murrayshall Course on our Instagram

Lyndoch Course

The Lynedoch Course is a beautiful 10-hole parkland layout that is ideal for golfers seeking a quick game of golf or for juniors and those new to the game. Shorter, but equally as challenging as the Murrayshall Course, the layout features slightly narrower fairways and challenging hills, framed by tall Scots pine trees.

Driving Range

At 350 yards long and cut to replicate three fairways, with bunker targets at 100, 150, and 200 yards, plus several other cut green flags their floodlit driving range offers a fantastic space to hone your game or hit a few balls before heading out to play a round.

Outdoor Pursuits

A trip to Murrayshall doesn’t have to all be about golf, the hotel also offers a wealth of outdoor activities to build into your stay. From luxury picnics in their garden, River Tay fishing experiences a food and whisky kayak tour, woodland guided walks and paddle boarding there is plenty to keep everyone entertained.

Final Thoughts

Murrayshall has it all! For golf enthusiasts this is certainly one of the best golf hotels in Scotland, combine this with great food and drink offerings in the bar and brasserie, fantastic guest room accommodation, and friendly staff and you have the perfect ingredients for a luxury golf break.

Norton House is a beautiful boutique hotel and spa on the outskirts of Edinburgh. Originally a family home owned by the Ushers, the family behind Glenlivet Whisky. This country house property is a fantastic staycation hotel for Edinburgh residents looking to get away from it as well as tourists visiting the Scottish capital in search of some peace and tranquility away from the city centre. The Luxury Editor recently visited this property so read on to find out what we thought of it.

Background And Concept

Set across 55 acres of gardens, woodlands and fields Norton House Hotel & Spa was formerly the home of the Ushers (the family behind Glenlivet Whisky). The hotel comprises of two sections; the original house with gorgeous period guest-rooms and private dining spaces, which can be hired out for weddings and the new part of the property which includes a fabulous Conservatory, Bar and Brasserie as well as additional guest-rooms and luxurious suites.

Looking for a hotel that you don’t need to leave from once you arrive? Norton House has a large spa complex so you can turn an overnight stay into the perfect relaxing getaway with ease.

Location

Located just 30 minutes drive from Edinburgh city centre by taxi and car or a hop skip and jump from the airport which is around 5/10 minutes away depending on traffic, the hotel is easily accessible. Whilst close to the city, you are in the heart of the countryside too – making it ideal if you want a city experience by day and country retreat by night.

As you pass the original stone gatehouse and journey along the tree-lined drive, between open fields, you instantly feel relaxed.

Rooms & Suites

The hotel comprises of the original house which is home to a number of ‘feature bedrooms’ with original period detailing (and the best views). The new wing of the property houses the bulk of the hotels 83 guest-rooms as well as the Edinburgh Suite and Kingdom Suite (which really does have the wow factor) and is popular with wedding couples.

Cramond Suite

We stayed in the Cramond Suite in the original part of the house overlooking the front of the hotel with views across the lawn it has a real Downtown Abbey feel to it and thoroughly romantic. As you walk into the room, a lounge with sofa and chair to the left sit around the original fireplace and taking centre stage in the middle of the room is a huge four poster bed.

If you watch our Instagram story you can see a tour of the Cramond Suite

Over at the window area is a dining table (you can order breakfast to your room as well) and across from the table is a large bathroom area.

While the room is period in finish, it is up to date with technology and has all the essentials; Nespresso machine, fridge, huge flatscreen TV, safe and the usual kettle and tea and coffee making necessities.

Kingdom Suite

Across in the new wing of the hotel is the Kingdom Suite, the biggest suite in the hotel. Occupying the far corner of the property with wrap around balcony looking out to the spa. This Suite is boasts a collection of different rooms, with large lounge area, dining room, huge bathroom with roll top bath and bedroom.

If you watch our Instagram story you can see a tour of the Kingdom Suite

Other Rooms and Suites

There are are two other feature bedrooms in addition to the Cramond Suite including the Lothian Suite and Edinburgh Suite, as well as a junior suite split across two levels.

The remaining guest-rooms are made up of Classics, Executives and Deluxe Doubles. All guest rooms come with an array of amenities including still and sparkling water, safe and fridge. Full details of each room type can be found here.

Food & Drink

Conservatory & Bar

The Conservatory is a great place to start the evening off with a drink or finish the evening (or both as we did!!). It’s filled with natural light during the day and by night becomes super romantic as you listen to the rain pitter patter on the glass ceiling. A full selection of drinks, spirits and wine are served as well as fantastic cocktails and light meals and bar snacks throughout the day.

Brasserie

The Brasserie is the heart of the the hotel, contemporary in finish with hardwood floors, wooden blinds and large windows to look out to the lawns and ground beyond. The menu takes a real pride in provenance with meat and fish sourced in Scotland, while menu options feature firm favourites and classics dishes. It is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I really loved the Burrata salad, mixed with pears and the Scallops were divine. The Steak is a must and it was cooked perfectly to order – the duck got the thumbs up too! I like to grade a hotel by its cheese board, and this one didn’t disappoint with an array of Scottish cheeses and plenty of oat cakes.

You can see a sample menu here to whet your appetite.

Breakfast

Breakfast is cooked to order (and can be served in your room too) offering a comprehensive selection of breakfast classics to get the day started the right way! Portions are generous and you can mix and match from the different breakfast menus to create your perfect breakfast plate. Coffees, teas and juices are all via table service too.

Spa

The spa at Norton House is a compete hidden gem! Having lived in Edinburgh for 12 years I have to admit I knew nothing about it, and I was completely blown away by it. Sunken into the original walled garden of the house the spa offers eight treatment rooms, a Rasul mud chamber, manicure and pedicure area, relaxation room and Amber Lounge all designed to help you reap the benefits of spa therapies.

Treatments use Elemis and Ishga products, you can book in for a day spa package (see spa menu here) and customise it to create the ultimate spa package or simply book a treatment during your say.

The spa complex itself is large, with an 18m swimming pool, hydropool with a swan neck waterfall (ideal for getting out knots in your back), a steam room and sauna. If you are feeling energetic there is a comprehensive gym and light food is served in their café-bar.

Final Thoughts

I really loved my stay at Norton House, coming from Edinburgh I know the city inside out, so it’s difficult for Edinburgh hotels to surprise me, but Norton House really did surprise and delight. The spa is great, the surroundings beautiful and the food was superb.

This hotel is ideal for anyone in Edinburgh looking for an easy escape or for visitors to Edinburgh in search of a country house experience within easy reach of the city……Norton House ticks all the boxes!

This hotel is included in our guide to the best luxury hotels in Edinburgh
