A home away from home nestled in 12 acres of Hertfordshire countryside in St Albans; Sopwell House, a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, is a 4 star Georgian country house hotel that believes in impeccable, genuine service with attention to every detail. The hotel has over 300 years of history and boasts 128 rooms and suites including 16 individually designed stylish Mews Suites positioned behind private gates. There is also a 2 AA Rosette Restaurant, Brasserie, Conservatory Bar, Cocktail Lounge, 15 event rooms including large conference space, spa and gym. An extensive, three stories of spa development was completed in August 2019, bringing state of the art facilities and services for its guests. Cottonmill Spa at Sopwell House is the UK’s first private members’ spa. Within the spectacular Cottonmill, there is an inner sanctum, called ‘The Club’ at Cottonmill. Here, there are a number of additional spaces, facilities and benefits, which may be accessed exclusively by only Club members and guests on a Club package.

Ideal For

Couples will particularly enjoy the Mews Suites. Set away from the main hotel, with private gates and beautifully landscaped gardens designed by RHS Chelsea and Hampton Court Palace Flower Show Gold award winner, Ann- Marie Powell, the suites offer luxury seclusion away from the hustle and bustle of every day life. With a choice of individually designed rooms each with unique features such as fireplaces, four-poster beds, in-room baths, private terraces, cedar wood spa baths and high end kitchenettes, the mews suites are the ideal romantic getaway. Mews guests also enjoy access to the brand new luxurious Club at Cottonmill spa facilities, boasting outdoor hot tubs, cabana beds, Deep Relaxation Room, experience showers, Whisper Room and much more. Style

The owner, Abraham Bejerano, purchased the property in 1986 and has sensitively developed and updated the facilities taking immense care to retain the character and charm of the original Georgian house. Guests will experience beautiful interiors with rich colours, texture and depth such as in the Cocktail Lounge as well as modern features such as those in the Conservatory or brand new spa which still retain texture and touches of the elements.

Rooms and Suites

A historic home with over 300 years of history, the Mansion House at Sopwell House is home to 112 guest rooms including balcony and family suites which can sleep up to two adults and two young children.

All rooms have use of the refurbished Cottonmill facilities including a 14.5 metre swimming pool, two vitality pools, sauna and steam room.

The 16 Mews suites found separate to the main hotel enjoy use of a communal garden area and hydropool as well as special features such as private terraces with cedar wood spa baths and self-sufficient kitchenettes. Mews suites can sleep up to two adults however some suites can sleep three with a sofa bed.

All Mews Suites also have access to the Club at Cottonmill spa facilities including luxury spa gardens, Whisper Room, Deep Relaxation Room and more.

Food and Drink

Sopwell House offers a range of dining options to cater to every taste. Whether relaxing with friends or colleagues, celebrating a special occasion or if you simply want to enjoy a romantic meal. The 2 AA Rosette Restaurant is home to a gourmet, award-winning dining experience with a modern British menu crafted by Head Chef, featuring simple, delicious dishes that use seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients. 

The Brasserie offers a more relaxed and vibrant setting with an open-plan kitchen space and classic dishes served alongside daily specials inspired by a global cuisine.

While every inch of Cottonmill is a private members’ spa, there are two distinct areas to the Spa at Sopwell House – Cottonmill and The Club at Cottonmill.

Cottonmill facilities includes use of the indoor pool, two vitality pools, a state of the art gym featuring the latest Technogym ‘Artis’ line equipment, sauna, steam room, poolside terrace and Sitting Room. After a treatment in one of our 12 treatment rooms, guests are invited to rest in the Rose Relaxation Room.

The Club at Cottonmill features world class spaces and facilities including luxury spa gardens, Garden Room, Whisper Room and Deep Relaxation Room. The Club area is accessible only to a select group of members and a limited number of guests or residents on Club packages.

There is a golf course next door, many countryside walks and parks, local historical sites such as the Verulamium Museum, St Albans Cathedral and Hatfield House as well as some family favourites such as Paradise Wildlife Park, Whipsnade Zoo and Warner Bros Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter. Plus, with London only 30 minutes away by train, there are many famous landmarks and attractions to enjoy in the city.

Transport Links

There are regular direct trains from London St Pancras to St Albans with only a 5 minute transfer by car to the hotel and London Luton airport is around 20 minutes by car.
